Student Name and Number:
Kian Devine
Project proposal title and date:
“Icarus” is the name of my game. 28/03/19
Main area of activity:
I will be having multiple areasin my FMP such as graphic design to make logos and box
art, but also making idle animations and menus in in photoshop in a 8bit pixel design.
Rationale:
Throughout the year, the projects I have made have been a music video, video game and
magazine. The skills I have learnt are how to research and plan for a project, doing it 3 times in a
similar structure for all my previous projects. This also helps my time management skill so I know
where to allocate my time and which sections aren’t as important as others. My other products all
have the same dark urban theme and atmosphere so I have experience in how to implement this
style, especially in graphic design and pixel art. These previous projects in this style have included
extensive research on different forms of media trying to incorporate a similar theme/atmosphere
which has helped me to understand how to implement different features in my projects. I also know
that my main strengths lie in creating 8 bit art, and also my ideas so creating an 8bit video game
allows me to use my imagination and implement it into my game how I please. I am also interested
in post apocalyptic and futuristic settings in all forms of media so I plan on merging the two so they
can work off of each other, creating an interesting contrast. The way that films show a character
arch throughout a story has made me want to make my game into a character based story,
focussing on the characters and their experiences within the story instead of the story being
narrated to the player directly.
Project Concept:
The concept for my game is to create my own world, heavy with detail to immerse the player. The
game will be a sci-fi turn-based mmorpg in various different environments such as forests, barren
wastelands, futuristic cities and more. The game will be lore heavy and will have extra story
outside of the game, giving the dedicated players a more rewarding and detailed experience. It will
be story and character driven, making the simplistic mechanics take a back seat as many indie
games focus on story such as SUPERHOT and UNDERTALE. This will take heavy influence from
XCOM with the character customization and the connection xcom players get with their characters.
I plan on making several aspects of my game such as characters designs, level designs, lore,
Advertising such as posters and box art, Logo etc. they will all feature a contrasting colour
schemes, having a primary dark background with neon coloured text, showing the contrast
between the dark atmosphere and the artificial bright neon lighting. I will research this by looking at
successful mmorpg games and seeing how they created an effective marketing style and
comparing it to sci-fi games with similar styles, looking at how they are similar and how they differ.
I will also look at the key features of many successful games and look at their key features and
analyse their overall effect on the design. I plan on creating 3 or 4 unique characters that contrast
with eachother greatly, so they are distinctly different in both appearance and their personality.
Since my game is an rpg, each character will have different abilities and personality traits that go
with which class they are, for example, the lone sniper will be mysterious and the pyromaniac
wearing a gas mask will act like a psychopath. The games story will focus inherently on the
characters themselves and will be shown through their eyes, as the player can control all of the
characters whenever they please. The story will be about the characters slowly figuring out what
has happened to a mysterious planet and how they got there, the player being shown information
when the characters find it, meaning the players learn what the characters learn. The mystery
centres around the enemy in the game and that gives the player a driving force to carry on playing.
This style of slow releasing story keeps the player gripped and also helps the characters develop

DELETE SUPPORT COMMENTS IN RED AFTER WRIING SECTION
as they can change based on what part of the story they know, such as becoming more
aggressive when they realise the enemy attacked their home planet. Showing a character arc such
as this is very important for my game as I want to make it focus on the character development and
the connection between the game and player.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I will review my project by looking at the process it took to make it, and how much time I allocated
to each section and see what parts of my project need improving based on how long I spent doing
it. I will also look at my previous projects and see if any issues that occur during my fmp, occurred
during my past projects also. Looking back and my checklist and schedule I plan on making will
also help me to understand what I might have missed out on my project. When comparing my
project to previous successful games, I will see if my designs for box arts etc has the same effect
and has any similarities to eachother. I also plan on having third party opinions on my work, so my
review isn’t skewed by my own opinion. This will be done by interviewing people and asking what
works well and what doesn’t about the media I will create. Looking at my proposal will help me
evaluate my game drastically as I can compare it to what I anticipated I could make, what I initially
planned on making and what I actually made. This will show me how well I worked and how fast I
worked, which will help me to know if I stuck to my schedule well or not. To evaluate my game I
shall look at what I managed to accomplish within the set timeframe and compare to what I thought
I would be able to do then I can say what I would do differently if I was to do it again. Looking at
my schedule and preproduction, I would also be able to say what I liked about my game and what I
didn’t like about it.

Week Tasks to be Completed: Specific Tasks
1 Initial Ideas and Proposal Think of basic idea and flesh out
General design of what to do
Look at potential animations, ideas
2 Research Look at exisiting products and pick out key
features
Look at the effect they have on viewer
3 Research Look at other forms of media that have the same
features and look at how they implement them
Look at other forms of media that have the same
genre/setting
4 Pre-production & Planning Create simple timetable of what to to do, giving
myself enough time for each section
Create overview of what I need to create, a
checklist of my project
5 Production I will focus on creating logos and design aspect
for my game such as enemies and characters
If have enough time, make basic posters and
concept art
6 Production Make box art and design game cartridge
Show what game would like in various online
game distributors such as steam and EPIC
games
7 Production Design gameplay aspects and setting. Place
characters into the scenery to create still images
or small animations
Create gameplay scenarios to show off features
of the game
8 Production Create a magazine review for the game, while
also making creative writing “lore” for my games
story.
If enough time is left, I would create a trailer for
my game, if sufficient animations are made
9 Evaluation Compare my game to other games in the same
genre, including games with similar features and
settings
I will also look at my proposal and see if I made
what I planned to make
Focus on what I didn’t do well and figure out why,
and if it was a reoccurring issue
