3. Research
• I think my research went really well due to how I knew
what I was looking for and that I managed to find out the
desired information. It helped me in creating my product
as video games can be quite subjective and different for
each audience so I had to make sure that I understood my
audience to the best of my ability. I mainly researched
existing products and what worked about them including
the shot type and colours used in them. Look at the
colours scpeicifically and comparing them to games of
different genres showed me how colours potray different
tones of a game and that more natural colours can be
used to create a more realistic game. I also used a survey
to ask question that help me to hone in on my target
audience a lot more and find out what they enjoyed and
more specifically what they enjoyed in games. I took the
answers from the survey and used them to help shape my
game into what the target audicence would like, especially
when creating the setting. Practical research was very
important for me as my pixel art wasn’t the best. I looked
at many tutorials and videos on how to add movement
and detail to pixel art and that really helped me in
creating my images due to being able to add depth and
detail that I couldn’t before.
4. Planning
• When planning my game, I realised that a lot of my planning was done in my research
subconciosly so my planning was rather basic. In my planning I just made sure than I had
exmaples of my primary colours that I would use so that I had reference to how to use
them. I also noted what effect the colours had in that game alone and what they would do
to affect my game so that I knew how to implement them well. In my reflection I made sure
that I understand what I was making so that I wouldn’t stray away from my initial plans like
many videos games do.i I also made sure I understood why I was making the game the way
that I am and what makes it unique compared to other games within the same genre. I also
one last time made sure that I identified my audience clearly so I kept them in mind while
creating my posters and characters. My planning relied heavily on making sure that my
research would be used properly and that I understood the research I had done. I think this
worked well as my game looks like as I imagine it and the characters are all unique and don’t
look similar. The colours used in the logo title are all vibrant and show the futuristic/ post
apocalyptic vibe very well which was very important for me.
5. Time Management
• My time management wasn’t the best during my research
period when it came to my practical research as my survey
hadnt received many participants so I struggled with at
using the replies. I managed to do my research completely
at a later date but it meant that I couldn’t use it while doing
my pre-production. My main issue with time is when I
started doing my more advanced pixel art as my
inexperience really showed when trying to create more
detail. These two images are what took up the most time
for me production wise as they feature the most detail and
are the two most important images for me as they will be
used as face of my game. Production was an issue overall as
my schedule quickly crumbled and I had to make the bare
basics as my skills clearly werent enough for what I had
planned to make so many sections were cut out to make
room for everything else such as the battle sections. To fill
these out I decided to write lore for my game to explain the
story more. If I was going to do this again I would definitely
create a schedule better and not give myself so much to do
so I can focus on what I can do but make sure I do it to the
best of my ability.
6. Technical Qualities
My technical qualities far surpass that of what they
were before I started this project. Specifically in detail
for my pixel art, I noticed that I could make different
objects stick out more and have more depth than I
could before due to the research and tutorials I did. I
also knew that my time management wasn’t great so I
focussed on making sure that what I made, looed
good. I also did a lot of research on how to make
different types of texts and how to make each text
type unique. In my logo I decided to make it very
advanced to try and make it stand out from other text
featured within the same scene as it. I also learnt how
to make neon signs as it goes with my futuristic tones
to the game.
7. Aesthetic Qualities
When making my game, I knew that my
detail was getting better with my pixel art so
that was helping me to create what I
needed to, but also I noticed that I was
learning how to frame and place objects
within a scene especially when have many
different characters and building. One of my
main focus for my research was the colours
that I would use for my colour scheme for
my settings. Instead of implementing them
directly into my setting, I decided to
implement them into my advertising such as
my posters and title to help show my target
audience the tone of the game before
buying it. I used the neon pink scarecly and
only in a few of my adverts.
8. Audience AppealWhen researching different games and
doing audience research, it was very
important for me to make sure that I
understood what my target audience
wanted so I focussed and making sure
that I knew what the liked from rpg
games and what they wanted more of. So
my research consisted of asking rpg fans
what style of rpg games they like and
what aspects from other games they
would bring into rpgs. This helped me to
create a unique rpg and to make it stand
out from other 8 bit games by placing it
into a turn based fighting style also. I
think I made my game appeal very well
to my target audience as it has a mature
them like they wanted but also doesn’t
focus too hard on its realism as that can
take out a lot of the enjoyment out of
rpgs as it takes out a lot of character.
10. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– The product seems unique and has a lot of
different colours used, especially when looking at
the character designs.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• More could have been made for the game but also it could have shown actual gameplay or
what was planned to be gameplay
11. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
The use of the 8bit graphics looks really good and
also the city scene looks really well the different
layering
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
Probably have made more characters as the character
designs were really good so seeing some more diverse ones
would have worked well
12. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
• I agree with almost all of the feedback as they are from
people who I would consider my target audience. The main
cricism was that I didn’t make enough and I said that in my
own time management evaluation
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
• I disagree with making more characters as I like my 3 main
characters as they are meant to be a group and form a
connection to the player and a trio is the perfect amount.
