3. Front Cover
I started my front cover by firstly
adding guides to my work to make
sure that everything I put on the cover
is spaced out correctly as this makes
everything look more professional, and
that’s the look I am going for with my
magazine.
Also I have added the name of my
magazine to the front cover, I want this
to be the main part and the thing that
stands out the most as I believe this is
the best way to brand a magazine, to
promote your own business before
anything else.
I decided to make my logo with the
classic cage working into my text, I did
this as it makes the title stand out
more rather than just be a boring and
plain piece of text. I think it suits well
to the subject and also looks good.
4. Front Cover
After that I then added my background
image. I decided to use Jon Jones for
this as I believe out of my main stories
his is the most promotable, this is due
to how well known Jones is, whether
it’s for his controversy or quality of his
fighting Jones is very well known in not
only the MMA community but in pop
culture as well. I also chose this image
as it is based on the same thing as my
article will be, this being the UFC 235
main event between Jones and
Anthony Smith, it also shows the title
which can add prestige to the fighter
and make more people want to read
due to it being based on a
championship fight.
5. Front Cover
After that I then added the text
relating to this story, first of all the
main headline, just being ‘Jon Jones’,
showing people who may not
recognise him who this is, as well as a
little description of what will be in the
magazine. This part shows what the
article is going to be about, the future
of Jon Jones as well as his dominant
performance, making people want to
read due to wanting to know what is in
the future of the light heavyweight
champion.
6. Front Cover
I then, using the guides I had
previously set up, added places to put
my side stories on the front cover, I
used the rounded rectangle tool to
make these as well as using a gradient
overlay to create the effect on the
colour of the shapes, as well as adding
a white stroke to this to make it look
more defined from the background.
I spaced these out evenly using the
guides in order to make the cover look
professional as well as copying the first
one three different times and moving
it to make sure everything was exactly
the same size, again making things
even.
7. Front Cover
I then added all the subject for my side stories,
these are all the other main stories from the
magazine and the stories that I believe would
bring the most readers.
Two of the stories are from Bellator and ONE FC
which are different companies and seen as
alternatives to the UFC, this can bring in new fans
to the magazine as not all MMA fans are
interested in UFC and a lot of other companies
have a very devoted cult following as well as
there own big stars that can make them compete
with UFC at certain times, having these on the
cover makes the reader know the magazine
covers all aspects of MMA and has a deep
knowledge, rather than just knowing about the
UFC and what is deemed as the most popular
companies and fighters.
As well as this I have chosen to include Conor
McGregor on the cover, this is in part due to my
questionnaire when I asked a question about
what would make someone want to read an
MMA magazine and a couple of the answers
were based on McGregor, due to him being the
biggest star in the sport, with the majority of the
world knowing who he is, he has become bigger
than the sport, so this can bring in casual fans and
people who are wanting to know more about
MMA and only have a knowledge of McGregor.
9. Contents Page
I started off the contents page by
firstly placing a guide in the middle of
the page to show me where the pages
separate. I then chose to use a picture
of Usman from UFC 235 as he was the
next person after Jones who a main
story is based on that has the most
attraction to the readers, therefore a
good place to use him is the contents
page, as some people may decide to
look at this to see what’s in the
magazine before buying.
10. Contents Page
I then added all of the contents of my
magazine to the page, I placed the title
just above the cage, looking like it is
sitting on top of this and then the
contents just below, leaving the top of
the cage visible, as well as leaving
Woodley just visible at the bottom of
the page.
12. MyMMA World Rankings
My next page is my world rankings page,
where I have decided to use my MMA
knowledge to come up with a top 15 list
for the most well known and exciting
divisions as well as a pound-for-pound
best list. I decided to do this as it gives
the magazine something that readers will
come back for, if they believe our opinion
is good they will always come back to
look at where they think we rank people,
as they respect the opinion. I believe I
can do this well due to my deep
knowledge of MMA, not only in the UFC
but in every major company in the world
of MMA.
To start this I separated the page into 12
different sections, these for each
different division I am going to be
ranking. As with the front cover I used the
guides (the blue lines on the screen) in
order to make sure that everything was
done evenly and looks professional.
13. MyMMA World Rankings
From there I then used research of
current events as well as my
knowledge to decide my top 15’s for
each division throughout the world of
MMA. I was unbiased throughout my
rankings and this can be shown
through some of my favourite fighters
not being as high as other fans of
these may put them, I believe this is
the best way as all journalism should
be unbiased and this is supposed to be
a professional sports journalism based
magazine.
15. UFC Results
I then decided to do the results page,
even though this is the last double
page spread in the magazine, at the
same time as the world rankings page,
due to it being very similar design wise
to this, and these being the quickest
pages to do due to the minimal design
of the pages. This page includes all the
results from UFC, the major company
in MMA, from January to March, the
time the magazine is covering. As well
as this we give our performances of
the quarter, being fighter, fight,
knockout and submission, this can
show people who may not have been
able to watch much in the past few
months all the results, as well as the
best parts of the last three months.
17. UFC 234
To start off the next page, based on
UFC 234, I copied the article that I had
already written in my ‘Copy’
PowerPoint into Photoshop after using
spellcheck and looking over all of the
article to make sure everything made
sense. I also kept the same guides
from the previous page and decided to
split the page into 2/6 article and the
rest to be images from the fight.
18. UFC 234
I then added the images I wanted to
use from the fight, these ended up
being the two fighters staring at each
other from opposite ends of the cage
before the fight, I think this shows off
the fighters best and also shows the
audience the main point of the article,
as well as the two fighters being very
well known and loved figures in the
world of MMA, with Silva’s legendary
status as well as an on the rise
Adesanya.
20. Henry Cejudo: Pound for
Pound Best?
To start off this article I used a picture
of Henry Cejudo from his monumental
win over TJ Dillashaw. This is due to it
being the point of the article and the
picture being a good one to work
around when designing the page.
21. Henry Cejudo: Pound for
Pound Best?
I then used the selection tool to
separate Cejudo from the background,
that was so I could cover the
background slightly in order to make
the text more readable and make
Cejudo stand out more. I think this is
better than removing the background
completely as that would make the
page look a lot more boring.
22. Henry Cejudo: Pound for
Pound Best?
Then to finish off the page I added to
article from my ‘Copy’ PowerPoint. I
also edited parts of this in order to fit
around the picture, once again making
Cejudo stand out more and be a main
part of the page rather than just the
background to the article.
24. Bellator Welterweight
Tournament
To start this page I separated the page
using guides once again into three
different sections, one being double
the size of the other two, as this is the
main part of the page and therefore
needs more room as there is more
content to it. I used the colour red
mostly on this page due to the logo of
Bellator using this colour, I used this as
I believe the best colour schemes are
those relevant to the content, and this
is due to the colours associated with
Bellator.
25. Bellator Welterweight
Tournament
From there I added two pieces of text
and two points of the page. This being
the description of the tournament is,
this being in the top left, and is a
general description of the tournament
and a general explanation of what has
happened, as well as the recap of what
has happened so far, this being on the
bottom left and mostly being based on
my opinion of the quality of the fights
as well as short descriptions of the
fights that have taken place so far.
26. Bellator Welterweight
Tournament
From there I then added my review of
the fight between Michael ‘Venom’
Page and Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley. This was
also taken from my ‘Copy’ PowerPoint.
This is a general fight review,
describing in detail the fight, minute
by minute and strike by strike.
28. Kamaru Usman: Pride of a
Continent
To start off this page I have decided to
use the colour scheme of the Nigerian
flag, due to Kamaru Usman’s immense
pride and patriotism for this nation, he
bases his career off representing his
nation. As well as this I have used an
African tribal text in the title, for
Usman’s name, as this also plays on
the theme of the “Pride of a
Continent”.
29. Kamaru Usman: Pride of a
Continent
I then added a picture of Usman in the
middle of the page as I plan to put the
text around this image. I used this
image as it is a professionally done
image and I believe this makes the
page look more smooth.
30. Kamaru Usman: Pride of a
Continent
From there I then added more to the page as
I felt the design looked too plain. So I played
around with a few things and this was the
best choice. The image used is that of the
new design of the UFC title, which Usman
won at UFC 235 after his victory over former
reigning champion Tyron Woodley. This
makes the image not only relevant to the
article but also prestigious due to the
championship and it’s meaning to the sport.
I chose to blend this into the colour scheme I
had chosen as this was still the theme I
wanted to keep and it also makes it a lot
easier to read the text, this was done by
changing the opacity of the image and using
the order of the different layers.
As well as this I added another layer over the
text to further keep to the African theme of
the page and also make the page less plain as
was the original goal of adding the
championship into the background. The
image used here is from an African tribal
pattern and to make this effect I used the
selection tool on the text, and then selected
the layer I had the tribal pattern on, and cut
out the selection of the text from this.
31. Kamaru Usman: Pride of a
Continent
From there I added the parts of the
article, these being the background of
the fighter, what happened at UFC
235, how it happened, and what I
believe to be next for the new
welterweight champion.
These articles are good for all MMA
fans, whether casual or proper. This is
as if you are a casual fan and may not
have seen the event or know much
about the fighter you can find all this
out through this, and if you are a
proper hardcore MMA fan you can see
what could possibly be next for the
fighter.
32. Kamaru Usman: Pride of a
Continent
Once again I thought the page looked
too plain and decided that a different
picture was needed on the page, one
that represents the page more, and
therefore I searched for a picture with
the title around Usman’s waist. As well
as this the picture featured the flag to
fit the theme of his nation, I made this
fit as well in line with the background
of the image as I could and then cut
out Usman using the selection tool
and copied this part of the layer, I then
changed the opacity of the
background of the image, this being
the flag mainly, in order for it to fir the
background of the image more, as well
as keeping the championship image in
the background visible through the
flag, but not through Kamaru Usman.
34. ONE FC: A New Era
The next page is based on ONE FC’s
event “A New Era”. This is the biggest
ONE FC event to date and is seen as an
event that could propel the popularity
of the company to unexpected heights,
with the debuts of big western stars
Eddie Alvarez and Demetrious Johnson
this event is going to bring lots of eyes
to the company and therefore it
deserves a place in the magazine.
To start the magazine I took the logo of
ONE FC and similar to the Bellator
Welterweight tournament page I
based the colour scheme off of the
logo, this being grey and gold, with a
black background. I found a font
similar to that in the title also to add
the “A New Era” text in the title of the
page.
35. ONE FC: A New Era
I then added the fight card to the page
incase people weren't aware of this,
including four title bouts as well as the
debuts of major stars ONE FC have
managed to pry away from the UFC. As
well as this I added images of the most
well known names on the card, this is
incase anyone was going to look over
this page as they may not have
realised the stars ONE FC have
acquired recently, they may spot
someone they didn’t know was
involved in the relatively unknown
company.
36. ONE FC: A New Era
After that I then added an article
based on what you should be looking
forward to the most from the event. I
added this due to many MMA fans
having not watched a ONE FC show
before and have only heard of the
company through there acquisition of
top stars. This means they will know
exactly what to expect from fighters
they may not have previously seen in
the past as well as our expectations for
the quality of the fight card.
38. UFC 235: Jones’
Domination
This page is based on UFC 235 once
again and this on the main event of
Jones V Smith for the light
heavyweight championship. To start
the page I added a picture of Jones
from his walkout at UFC 235, I feel this
picture is very representative of Jones
as it shows his cocky nature, from the
taunting stature of him on his way to
the octagon.
39. UFC 235: Jones’
Domination
From there I then did the same thing
to this page as I did with the “Henry
Cejudo: Pound for Pound Best?” page
earlier in the magazine. Separating
Jones from the background and
copying this from the layer into
another layer, then using a grey layer
to make the background less involved,
and in part make the text that will be
on the page a lot easier to read.
40. UFC 235: Jones’
Domination
After that I added the article from my
“Copy” PowerPoint into the page and
scaled it to the page and around the
image of Jones. As well as this I added
the article title, having part of this
behind Jones, showing he is the main
focus after dominating his division.
The articles focus on what happened
at the event as well as what is next,
similar to the Usman article but I
believe a background doesn’t need to
be provided when talking about Jones
as he is one of the most known people
in the world of MMA, similar to
McGregor many people who don’t
know the sport MMA know who Jones
is, due to controversies and an almost
perfect record of fights.
42. Confirmed Fights
The next page is based on the
upcoming confirmed fights on the day
of the magazine’s supposed release
(this being the 31st March). I decided
to use Max Holloway for the
background of this as I believe this is
the best fight that is upcoming and will
also have the most eyes on it.
43. Confirmed Fights
I then added the best of the rest of the
fights that were officially confirmed at
this point, I kept adding fights to the
page until it looked full enough to the
point of having a lot of content on the
page but not being overcrowded, as
well as this I chose not to include the
ONE FC fights as they got there own
dedicated article. The fights I chose are
what I believe to be the best fights
that the most fans will be excited for,
making the page stand out to more
fans.
45. Rumoured Fights
The next page is based on rumoured
fights that there are legitimate
rumblings of in the MMA world. Once
again I decided to have the most
exciting fight and the one that will
bring the most eyes as the main
background of the page, this being a
possible showdown between Conor
McGregor and Donald Cerrone.
46. Rumoured Fights
I then added a likelihood rating to the
page, I believe this will give the
readers something to base the
rumours on and see how likely the
certain fights are to happen, it gives he
fans less hope on certain fights and
more for others, as well as improving
the reputation of the magazine if we
get the likelihood ratings right in the
long run.
47. Rumoured Fights
After that I then added the most
legitimate as well as most exciting
rumoured fights after McGregor V
Cerrone. These include a possible full
leaked card, as well as a possible
legend of the sport in Brock Lesnar’s
return, but this being the most unlikely
on the page, making fans believe there
is a chance, but a very slim one.
49. Back Page: UFC 236
Advertisement
I decided that the back cover of my
magazine should be designed as an
advertisement, as many professional
magazines do this and I wanted to
make the magazine seem as
professional as possible.
So I decided to make the
advertisement for UFC 236 as this is
the most hyped upcoming event after
the release of the magazine.
I started the design with a stormy
background, as I think this represents
the fight card very well, due to the
expectation of two electric fights, also
featuring a “V” in the middle of the
page, this standing for versus and
acting as the separation between the
fighters when they are added to the
image.
50. Back Page: UFC 236
Advertisement
From there I added the fighters
involved in the main and co-main
event interim title fights to the poster.
I made the two fighters in the main
event, Dustin Porier and Max Holloway
the main focus and then the co-main
event of Israel Adesanya and Kelvin
Gastelum the lesser focus due to the
placement of the card. I also chose
these certain pictures as I was
attempting to make the fighters all
look like they were facing off with each
other, I believe this has worked well as
all involved look like they are intensely
facing off.
51. Back Page: UFC 236
Advertisement
I then added another layer of the
background as I believe this improved
the design, and added this in front of
the fighters, then changing the opacity
to make it seen through the fighters
and the rest of the poster.
As well as this I added some text to
explain the poster, stating the date of
the event as well as the two fights and
showing that they are both title fights,
meaning the fighters go 5 rounds with
each other, making for a higher quality
fight and a bigger test for the fighters.
The text was placed in front of the
second stormy layer as it needs to
stand out and be easily readable due
to it being the main point of the
advertisement.
