Strength Through Joy Movement
(Kraft durch Freude)
It was a state-operated leisure organization in Nazi Germany.
It was a part of the German Labour Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront, DAF).
KdF was set up as a tool to promote the advantages of National
Socialism to the people, it had become the world's largest tourism
operator by the 1930’s.
By 1934, over two million Germans had participated in a KdF trip; by 1939
the reported numbers were 25 million people.
“Strength through Joy” provided cheap theatre and cinema tickets.
It also organised courses and trips and sport events.
Workers were offered cut-price cruises on the latest luxury liners.
Thousands of workers saved 5 marks per week in the state scheme to
buy the Volkswagen Beetle, the people’s car. The scheme was designed
by Ferdinand Porsche and became a symbol of the prosperous new
Germany, even tough no workers received the car because all car
production was halted by the war in 1939.
At the outbreak of war, holiday travel was stopped; up until this point, the
KdF had sold more than 45 million package tours and excursions.
By 1939, it had over 7,000 paid employees and 135,000 voluntary
workers, organized into divisions covering such areas as sport,
education, and tourism, with wardens in every factory and workshop.
