These slides were prepared for a workshop for international students at Massey University, New Zealand. The session covered the appropriate use of linking words and other strategies for creating clarity and focus in academic writing.
What do we mean when we say that a company has acted unethically?
Can a company’s behaviour be unethical but legal?
Can you think of any corporate scandals where a company has acted illegally or unethically?
This document discusses a study on corporate social responsibility (CSR) among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Egypt. The study aimed to determine if Egyptian construction SMEs implement CSR in their activities. CSR was measured using four dimensions: economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic. The results showed that Egyptian construction SMEs implement economic and legal CSR, but do not implement ethical and philanthropic CSR. Overall, the study concluded that while SMEs focus on economic and legal responsibilities, they do not implement CSR comprehensively as required. The document recommends policies to encourage SMEs to adopt all dimensions of CSR.
The laws of physics help win more bids (with on screen notes)The Bid Coach Ltd
The document discusses how the laws of physics can help win more bids. It summarizes key laws and concepts from physics such as thermodynamics, motion, gases, and evolution and relates them to communication strategies for winning bids. Some of the key messages are that change is inevitable so one must adapt, less information is better than more, and there is always room for improvement.

Measuring what we want to measure: writing excellent questions for College examinations. Plenary lecture at the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists Science Week meeting, 2013
One of the challenges of any examination system is measuring the knowledge skills and judgements that we think are important indicators of achievement. This session will focus on designing and communicating tasks for candidates that let them demonstrate their knowledge, skills and judgement. It will look at different types of questions, including where MCQs fit in, and what to think about when writing them.

This document discusses linking words and connectors of sequence that can be used to guide readers through writing. It provides examples of linking words like "and", "or", and "but" that join or contrast ideas. It also lists connectors of sequence like "first", "then", and "finally" that are used to show the order in which things happen, providing the example sentence of a morning routine using several of these connectors.
Linking words are used to join clauses and sentences. There are three main types: conjunctions, sentence connectors, and subordinators. Conjunctions like "and" and "but" join two parts of a sentence. Sentence connectors like "furthermore" and "however" link ideas between sentences. Subordinators such as "although" and "because" join clauses.
This document provides an overview of English connectors, including their meaning and use. It begins by defining key terms like sentence, subordinate clause, and noun phrase. It then lists 13 types of connectors used in English, such as connectors of addition, contrast, cause and reason, result, purpose, time and sequence, similarity, opinion, general statements, reality, examples, lists, and conclusion. For each type of connector, there is a brief section that likely provides examples.

El documento resume las características principales del sistema procesal penal chileno. Explica que el proceso penal se inicia por la ocurrencia de un hecho que podría constituir un delito y que luego la policía investiga y puede detener a sospechosos. El fiscal debe luego decidir si mantiene la detención o libera a la persona. Si hay juicio, puede ser ante un juez de garantías o un tribunal oral penal. El nuevo sistema es acusatorio, con un fiscal que acusa e investiga de forma contradictoria con la defensa ante un juez pasivo.
This document provides information about using connectors in writing. It discusses what connectors are and how they connect ideas between sentences and paragraphs. Some common types of connectors are discussed, including connectors of addition, contrast, cause, order, and other examples. The document provides practice identifying connectors in sentences and rewriting paragraphs to include more connectors. It emphasizes that connectors help make writing more cohesive and aid the reader's understanding.

PHI 2604 CREATING YOUR OUTLINE
A good practice before you write your paper is to create an outline. This should include 1) your thesis statement (main argument), 2) an outline and 3) a works cited page.
Follow the MLA style unless otherwise clarified with the professor.
The outline should be more detailed than just noting a) Introduction, b) argument, c) conclusion. This is too superficial to be helpful for you. Instead consider the main concepts that you will explain, or the main argument you will make and how each of the elements of the paper fit together.
In developing your outline, it may be helpful to keep the following in mind regarding philosophy papers:
"A philosophy paper presents a reasoned defense of some thesis. So a philosophy paper typically does at least one of the following:
• Defends a thesis by offering plausible reasons to support it
• Defends a thesis by showing that arguments against it are unconvincing
• Criticizes a thesis by showing that the arguments for it are unconvincing
• Contrasts two or more views on a given issue and argue for one view over the other."

Negative Consequences: Single Use Plastic and Its Detriment to the Greater Good
Environmental pollution is detrimental to non-human well-being and one of the major contributors is the creation of single use plastic, much of which ends up in the oceans. We have all seen the disturbing images of turtles with plastic bags around their necks or whales, sharks and dolphins whose post-mortems reveal stomachs full of plastic debris (Hastings, 209). However, single use plastic is also detrimental to human well-being because, I argue, human health and happiness is only possible within a thriving and healthy environment. In other words, single use plastic is a moral concern. In this paper, I review single use plastic according to the utilitarian principle that we ought “to act according to the greater good for the greater number,” (Bentham, 205) and that we ought to do our utmost to reduce suffering in both human and non-human species. I also consider Bentham’s claim that “one only counts as one” and argue that from a utilitarian perspective, we should dissuade the production of single use plastic.

III. An explanation of Utilitarianism and how it can be used to argue for the banning of single use plastic. You can explain the framework and how it was developed to guard against ethical egoism and the self-interest of the wealt.
Theoretical Bases for Analyzing the Ethics of a DecisionAdapted .docxsusannr
This document provides an overview of three major theoretical perspectives on ethical decision-making: utilitarianism, profit maximization, and universalism. It summarizes the key principles of each theory, including potential criticisms, and gives examples of how each could be applied to decisions in business contexts. The goal is to present the major perspectives in a concise way that can be easily understood and applied to everyday decisions.

THEORETICAL BASES FOR ANALYZING THE ETHICS OF A DECISION
Adapted from a chapter by John R. Deckop, in Vida Scarpello (ed). The Handbook of Human Resource
Management Education: Promoting and Effective and Efficient Curriculum, Los Angeles: Sage Publications, 2008.
Philosophers have pondered ethical questions for millennia, and have developed numerous
theoretical perspectives to aid in ethical decision-making. The range and depth of philosophical
theories on ethical decision-making can be daunting. So much so that arguably, presenting all
the major philosophical perspectives, and their nuances, is likely to fail from a pragmatic
standpoint because there is no way most students can absorb, much less apply on a day-to-day
level, so much material.
So this analysis will be restricted to the two “dominant” (Beauchamp & Bowie, 1997)
philosophical perspectives on ethics: utilitarianism and universalism, and will deal with only the
most general features of these theories. Things will be complicated a little, in that a third
theoretical perspective that is a subset of utilitarianism will also be discussed: profit
maximization.
The goal is to provide three perspectives (utilitarianism, profit maximization, and
universalism) on ethical decision-making that can actually be easily remembered, taught, and
used in daily decision-making. Later other perspectives will be overviewed, including theory
that challenges the two dominant perspectives.
Utilitarianism
The theory. Utilitarianism, developed primarily in the 19th century, can be understood by the
common phrases “The greatest good for the greatest number” and “The ends justify the means.”
The utilitarian believes that the potential outcomes of a decision should be analyzed to see who
benefits and who is harmed. The decision that results in the most total benefit compared to harm
is the best decision. The utilitarian is often portrayed figuratively as holding a scale, with the
benefits on one side being weighed against the harm on the other.
A critical aspect of this theory is that a decision can result in harm to some individuals and
still be the most ethical course of action. As long as benefit versus harm is maximized, the “ends
justify the means.” From a utilitarian perspective, an organizational downsizing for example
would be ethical as long as the good that comes from it, perhaps in the form of long-term
company health and shareholder value, outweighs the harm to dismissed and current employees,
and other stakeholders.
To conduct a utilitarian analysis, one must first conduct a stakeholder analysis. Put simply, a
stakeholder analysis assesses the effects of the alternate decisions facing the firm on all that are
affected by the decision. Specific methods for conducting stakeholder analyses can be complex,
though all make explicit the nature of the effects and why they will occur. B ...

Producvity improvements have a profound impact upon living standards for people around
the world. Although completely cut off from society, a group of people stranded on a

This document discusses the need for theory building in entrepreneurship research. It begins by noting that while empirical knowledge of entrepreneurship has grown, it still lacks a substantial theoretical foundation. The authors argue that researchers should shift their focus from defining entrepreneurs to modeling the entrepreneurial process. They propose working definitions of entrepreneurial events and the entrepreneurial process. An ideal model of entrepreneurship, they say, would be deterministic and account for the unique characteristics of the entrepreneurial process, like its initiation through human volition and sensitivity to initial conditions. However, incorporating human volition poses challenges for mathematical modeling approaches.
This document provides an introduction to business ethics. It defines business ethics as the study of business situations addressing issues of right and wrong. Business ethics examines morally right decisions, not just commercially strategic ones. The relationship between business ethics and law is described, with ethics covering issues beyond just legal compliance. Morality, ethics and ethical theory are distinguished, with ethics representing a systematic study of morality. The importance of business ethics is outlined in terms of business power and impact, its potential for good or harm, and addressing complex stakeholder demands. Business ethics is important for a variety of organization types and faces different challenges in a globalized world.

This document discusses the importance of high school student athletes maintaining good academic performance. It argues that allowing athletes to participate in sports while doing poorly in school sends the message that academics are not important and can negatively impact their development of a strong work ethic. Requiring athletes to pass classes on their own, rather than giving them leniency, helps ensure they put in effort to learn. Overall academics should be the top priority, as sports for most high schoolers will not continue beyond graduation.

In Odoo, making a field required can be done through both Python code and XML views. When you set the required attribute to True in Python code, it makes the field required across all views where it's used. Conversely, when you set the required attribute in XML views, it makes the field required only in the context of that particular view.

Firstly, the chain employs a thousand people in New

Here, for example, it highlights the move from
description of the situation to a focus on the problem
(which will be the focus of the essay)
15. It’s best to think of linking words as adding
SPICE to a paragraph.
16. A LITTLE spice, carefully
matched to the dish, will
enhance the flavour.
TOO MUCH will overwhelm
the flavour and make the
dish uneatable.
17. See how in this well-written paragraph, just ONE
linking phrase is used to highlight an important
move.
18. Another way to consider this decision is to focus
on its consequences. Ethical theories which focus
on the consequences are known as
consequentialist (Smith, 2009). According to one
of these theories, Utilitarianism, decision-makers
need to focus on the consequences of an action
for everyone who is affected. An action can only
be considered justified if it is intended to bring
the greatest happiness to the greatest number of
people (Richards, 2011). The strength of this
approach to ethics is that it encourages decision-
makers to consider in a practical way the ‘bigger
picture’ of their actions’ in terms of their effects
on others, not only on themselves. On the other
hand, as Brown (2006) points out, happiness
cannot be objectively measured. And a narrow
interpretation of this approach might lead to a
view that any actions are allowed since ‘the end
justifies the means’.

Introduction
of theory
20. People might overuse linking words because they think these
words will help give their writing clarity and ‘flow’.
The problem is that linking words can’t create clarity or flow;
they can only highlight elements that are already there.
And using too many of them can reduce their value and attract
too much attention (like strong spice!).
More basic ways of creating clarity and flow are STRATEGIC
REPETITION and OLD-NEW sentence structures.
21. STRATEGIC REPETITION means repeating the key topic
words (or associated words) in most sentences in a paragraph.
It can give a paragraph a very clear focus on a theme.
22. For instance, look again at the paragraph about Utilitarianism.
The theme of the whole essay is the decision which the
manager needs to make.
The main theme of is that Utilitarianism is an ethical theory
which focuses on the consequences of actions.
So the key words are ‘decision’, ‘ethical theory’ and
‘consequences’.
Notice how often these words (or associated words) are used.
23. Another way to consider this decision is to focus on its
consequences. Ethical theories which focus on the
consequences are known as consequentialist (Smith,
2009). According to one of these theories, Utilitarianism,
decision-makers need to focus on the consequences of
an action for everyone who is affected. An action can only
be considered justified if it is intended to bring the
greatest happiness to the greatest number of people
(Richards, 2011). The strength of this approach to ethics
is that it encourages decision-makers to consider in a
practical way the ‘bigger picture’ of their actions’ in terms of
their effects on others, not only on themselves. On the
other hand, as Brown (2006) points out, happiness cannot
be objectively measured. And a narrow interpretation of this
approach might lead to a view that any actions are allowed
since ‘the end justifies the means’.
24. OLD-NEW sentences make a smooth transition between the
topic of the previous sentence(s) and the topic of the new one.
This is especially important in the TOPIC sentence at the
beginning of a new paragraph.
Another way to consider
this decision …
… is to focus on its
consequences
