This document outlines the course details for a vocal music and guitar class. It discusses the goals of performing with confidence both solo and in ensembles, learning healthy performance practices, and appreciating all types of music. Students will have opportunities to perform in small ensembles and as soloists in a variety of styles. Assessment will include performance quizzes, journals, discussions and theory. Technology may be used to enhance learning when appropriate, and all students will have access to instruments and materials needed for the course.

I encourage you to bring your phone to
class. I do have computer labs booked and
will periodically have the iPad cart if you do
not have a cell phone.

You will be signing on to Schoology on
Thursday.
I intend on giving your parents a code so
that they have access to your account.
If you do not have internet access at
home, please make time to see me.

6. Phones, Tablets, iPods, etc.
We will be using technology to enhance
learning NOT as a distraction.
It will be made very clear when it is
appropriate to use these devices.
If you are not using your device for
learning it will be taken away.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a phone,
tech. will be made available to you when
possible.

Please keep your music in your folder.
You may keep a pencil and your written
work in your folder as well (if you prefer)

Music stands may be used as desks for

10. Theory/Journaling
 Journaling will be taught very specifically
 Don’t understand? Ask, I will help you!
 Again, bring your own writing materials. I
usually have paper for you.
 Hand in your work with your name on it. No
name = no marks.

 Sight-reading is a tool that teaches professional
musicians to be able to read music by sight.

You are responsible for care and
maintenance of the instrument.
Provide your own picks.
Have replacement strings with you, if you
do not know how to change your strings,
Mrs. Barkhouse will help you.
The school will not provide a guitar for
you.

70% course work
30% final summative evaluations
Course work will include journals
(Thinking, Communication), theory
(Knowledge), performing (Application)
The FSE will include performance and
written components

15. Course work will also include Arts Night.
The final exam will be a short performance
and worth about 10% of your mark. The
other 20% of your FSE will be completed
ahead of the exam date.
