Fingerprinting has been used for identification purposes for thousands of years. The earliest known uses of fingerprints date back to ancient China and Babylon. However, it was not until the 17th-18th centuries that fingerprints began to be systematically studied and categorized. In the late 19th century, classification systems were developed that are still used today to identify individuals based on the unique ridge patterns of their fingerprints.
