The document discusses three articles about assistive technology that can help students with special needs. The first article talks about how technologies like Microsoft Word can help students edit documents more easily compared to handwritten work. The second article discusses how text-to-speech software can improve reading comprehension for students with dyslexia. The third article describes an impressive new assistive technology that acts as a keyboard, mouse, and Braille reader to help blind users access computers and the internet.

How do we begin to design learning that will capture the essence of the content, stick with the audience, and ultimately achieve outstanding business results? The answer may be in what we have known all along: the story!

Integrating Online Games into Learning & DevelopmentBe Learning
Nine billion hours a year are spent playing Window's Solitaire
The online games industry is worth – give or take a few – around 15 billion
20 million players have spent 17 million hours on the Xbox – that’s more than 2 hours played for every person on the planet
Just imagine what we could do if we harnessed just a small percentage all that creativity and energy (and money!) and channeled it towards something really worthwhile…
Be Learning are talking about SCORM, and the way it hinders the effectiveness of modern and engaging digital learning experiences. A Presentation on Gamification of Learning by Be Learning.
In recent years there has been a huge drive to harness the power of digital gaming in learning. It is a huge subject with games taking many forms and delivered in many ways, from the PC to the mobile, the gameboy to the Kinnect. They have been applied to aid the development of subject knowledge, subject specific skills to learning collaborative skills such as problem solving and team work. In many cases we are already using ‘gaming’ in learning, whether it be board games, quizzes or like one of our recent customer service programs where the facilitator led day was designed as a game with the integration of gaming principles.
Be Learning’s US based Director Miriam Tassone and Sydney’s own Dimity MacDiarmid travelled all the way to Dallas, Texas to share our knowledge of the industry with many other great names in the learning industry during ASTD 2013.
One of our favourite topics is of course “Loving a Digital Learning Life”, so you can imagine how thrilled we were to share our own experiences! In the digital economy, why is storytelling so powerful for learning? What are the key components of storytelling? Miriam and Dimity provided all the answers. They showed how to translate this into the digital landscape and invited the crowd to imagine the application of digital storytelling in their own workplace. The positive reactions and feedback we received were overwhelming and very inspiring. Here's the presentation.. Digital Text:
Introduction:
When we think about the text, we have some ideas in our minds
that text is any piece of writing in printed form. The text may be in
the form of papers, slogans and in canvass form.
But when we think about digital text, we say that firstly it is a
technology based written material. It is in coded form. It is a piece
of writing written in coded form found in computer, laptop, mobile
devices and other technological devices.
Definition of Digital Text:
Electronic versions of a written text or words or images that make up
that text is called digital text.(IGI- Global Dictionary).Continue:
Digital Text is delivered on a computer or another electronic devices
to meet the students and teachers’ need .
Now the world has become a global village . It is because of
technology. With the help of technology, we can be in touch with
one another and get communicated using ICT –Information and
communication Technology. Technology has provided us not only a
platform of business communication, but also pedagogical learning
and teaching platform for teachers and students respectively.
Technology has provided us innovation in every field of life. it is in
medical field, pedagogical, etc.
Thus the technology has revolutionized the world. Features of Digital Text:
Text features are parts of text that draw your attention to important
information. Text features in a book may include titles or headings,
subtitles, bold print, bullets, quotations, pictures, maps or diagrams,
captions, and sidebars.
You may see these types of text features in digital text, but you will
also see digital text features.
Digital text features include, hyperlinks, audio, video, interactive
images (photo galleries, maps, diagrams, simulations), pop ups,
interactive questions, and comment/note options.
Continued:
• Hyperlink:
A hyperlink points the reader to additional information in the form of a website or file.
Hyperlinks are usually indicated with a different color or underline.
• Sidebar:
Additional information found on the side or bottom of an article or webpage.
• Pop up:
A pop up is a window that gives the reader more information. In this example, the
pop up defines a word in the text.
We are living in the 21st century filled with technology. Children nowadays are more interested on something new such as gadgets. Technology integration in the classroom is one of the revolutions in education. How will educational technology (EdTech) prepare the pre-service education students in teaching these 21st century learners?

3. Use of Computer Technology to Help
Students with Special Needs
• There are many technologies out there to help children
with special needs. This article is about explaining who
these children are and what technology is out there to
help. According to the article using technology is a way
to help the students do better in school such as
Microsoft Word, students would rather edit
information on Microsoft Word than on a hand written
document. Word prediction software is a way of
lowering the number of keystrokes one has to use, that
is something you cannot do with a hand written
document, this allows students with curtain disabilities
to do better in the classroom.

4. • I learned something new from reading this
article. Even though students with disabilities
are very diverse, characteristics suggest that
over half of students with disabilities are
male, most are in elementary or middle
school, and most are not obvious disabilities.
Knowing these things can be helpful in the
future as a teacher using assistive technology.

5. Something Else...
• One thing this article did mention is that this
is the first generation to be in the “digital age”.
It is important to make sure that students with
special needs are learning about these
technologies as well.

6. Supported eText: Assistive Technology
Through Text Transformations
• One way to make reading easier is too shift it
to text from a written document. This can
used on several items such as
iPod, phone, computer, or a LeapPad. This can
change the readers world entirely because
changing it the words to text can change the
font size, color, or font face. The text can be
read aloud, terms can be explained through
hyperlinks, or images can appear to explain a
topic more clearly.

7. • The use of text to speech is also growing
rapidly for use of the blind or visually
impaired, by using digitized speech
technology. But in recent years it has been
noticed that this type of assistive technology
can also be used for other reading difficulties.
This helps to improve the reading rate and
comprehension rate of many students who
have problems reading or students with
dyslexia.

8. More To Know
• We are going into a world where advanced
technology is being used in almost every
classroom. To stray away completely from hand
writing is not plausible and in my opinion should
not happen, but it is also necessary to know how
to read and write on a computer. There are so
many more options when reading text, to help
students with special needs, or really anyone
grasp concepts. Whether it is learning to read for
the first time, using hyperlinks/dictionaries to
find the meaning of words, or having visual
images to learn.

9. Technology Speaking: Impressive
Assistive Technology
• Technology is growing rapidly, that is including
assistive technology, which is something most
people do not think about. One very
impressive new assistive technology is a unit
that sits under a keyboard that acts as a cursor
and Braille reader. This acts as a keyboard and
mouse while using the computer. This
technology is used to help blind use the
internet.
Next
10. • Why don’t we use this technology in schools
for the blind and colleges where people need
them? Well the answer to that is they are very
expensive, I was surprised to find out one
Accessibility Pavilion cost $10,000. Another
question is how does this help even with the
Braille reader, well it helps the person to hear
what the computer has to display.

11. A Few More Thoughts
• Assistive technology is adapting to the needs of
more people everyday. One of the problems we
face today is having the funds to actually make
use of these technologies. In the article
“Impressive Technology” David Dorman says “It
was five minutes into the demonstration before I
noticed the vendor rep, who was navigating
around windows and various application
programs like a hacker, was blind.” Hopefully
someday this technology will grow into
something even more amazing, and more of the
population will be able to use it.

12. Conclusion
All of these assistive technologies are useful in teaching in
any classroom. Technology keeps advancing and it is
important to keep up with it, because any teacher
should not be teaching students who understand the
technology the teacher does not. Assistive technology
is especially useful because it helps students learn no
matter what their curcumstances.
