LEARING HOW TO
LEARN
FINAL PROJECT

Preface
• This presentation contains few important methods for effective learning.
• The methods discussed will increase your learning rate and make recalling
better.
Topics Covered
• Memory
• Procrastination
• Chunking
MEMORY
• SHORT-TERM MEMORY:
• It is used when we learn something for first time.
• We have only 4 slots that’s why do not try to learn something complex at first.
• LONG-TERM MEMORY:
• It’s like a large warehouse where you store things for long time like habits etc.
“The more you practise a topic, more stronger your neural connections becomes and hence
you’re able to store that thing in long term memory. But don’t practise same thing again and
again, make sure you do deliberate practise i.e. add few difficult things or level up”
Memory Cont.
• A bit everyday helps you store them in long term memory. That’s we quote,
“Success is sequential. It’s the everyday habits that make you successful”
• Keep repeating time to time.
CHUNKING
• It is breaking a large activity into smaller parts that are easy to learn and
understand.
• E.g. : Batting in Cricket. You don’t have to learn all the shots on a single day.
First break things into smaller achievable goals like bat grip, then position of
legs and head, then taking one shot at a time and practising until you become
good in it. Then you move onto the next match.
• At the match day, you combine all this small chunks into a bigger neural
network, that helps you score well on ground.
Method to create chunk
• Simply Focus with no distractions.
• Understand the basic idea.
• Try it yourself.
• Gain context. When this particular thing should be used.
• Try to explain it to someone else.
• When you chunk, you don’t have to remember all the relevant details, just the
gist is enough.
PROCASTINATION
• When we feel something we should not do, it activates insular cortex which associates
activity with pain. So you rather avoid doing that thing.
• Therefore, our brain switches to something else more pleasurable i.e. Zombitube,
Zombibook etc.
• To avoid procrastination, we pomodoro technique.
Pomodoro Technique
• Setting a timer of 25 minutes.
• No interruption during this 25 minutes.
• Focus on the process rather than product. As it makes us like the process and
product is something that makes you go away from doing it.
• After 25 mins. , you get a 5 minute reward. To do anything i.e. coffee or tea,
Zombitube etc.
End Notes
• “Everyday try to be the best version of yourself ”
