1. Dear Evan Hansen Rehearsal Log
In this session we focused on the staging, more in depth, the scene
Sincerely, Me from Dear Evan Hansen. Our target as a group was to
begin adding the minor movements, gestures and choreography, in
order to bring the scene to life. We was also all individually focusing on our vocal ability. We
believe the minor details of how we stage this piece are very important as they are what make the
scene stand out within the musical and be very di
ff
erent from the rest, with it being very playful,
energetic and humorous.
The SMART targets that I focused on during this rehearsal was keeping up my energy and
characterisation when performing and also making sure I was pushing my vocal skills to hit the
correct notes. In order to do this I spent time properly looking into my character of Evan Hansen
and the way in which he is portrayed during the professional production of this scene. I also spent
time in a practice room attempting to hit the high note I have, in the lines “dude I’m proud of
you...”, as this was part of the song that I was really struggling with.
This rehearsal was mainly led by just the three of us within our group as the director was going
around to all the individual groups and giving support where needed. As a group we decided on
doing this piece as we felt it would stand out within the show case as it is the only humorous and
playful piece. Sincerely, Me, falls around a quarter of the way into Dear Evan Hansen the musical
and acts as a very crucial moment within it. In the scene Evan and his friend Jared are writing fake
emails between Evan and Connor, who had just taken his own life, in order to support the lies
Evan was telling to Connors parents about them being best friends. Which lead to this scene be
very jokey and playful as Jared and Evan attempt to make these emails seem believable. The
relationship between Jared in Evan is very sarcastic and jokey from Jared side and much more
serious from Evans however. The relationship between Conor and Evan in this scene is overly
friendly however as we know Connor is dead and it is all just Evan’s imagination.
The main musical theatre elements in this scene are Acting and singing, with small parts of dance.
As all three of us are mainly actors we chose to make the dance part as playful and not serious as
possible as this
fi
tted the scene the most. The main skills in which we use when performing this
piece are projection, pitch, breath control, timing, characterisation, spatial awareness, accent,
gesture and proxemics.
As I was assigned the role of Evan Hansen I had to perform all elements of musical theatre and all
of the skills listed above. Some of my main focuses when embodying this character are vocal
skills and characterisation. Throughout the scene I have to hold a strong American accent while
singing and acting. While doing this I also have to hold good characterisation in order to show the
anxious and shy characteristics of Evan even during such energetic scene where these elements
are not portrayed as much compared to other scenes within the musical. This is also crucial in
order for me to play Evan e
ff
ectively in this scene.
One strength I feel as if I a during this rehearsal was my vocal skills. When performing I held a
good accent throughout while projecting my voice to
fi
t the enemy within this scene. However my
main achievement was being able to hit the high note that i had been struggling with for he
fi
rst
time in front of the group. This was a struggle for me as I lack con
fi
dence when it comes to
singing therefore tend to restrict my voice and its ability when performing around others, therefore
achieving this in this rehearsal showed huge progress for me.
One weakness I feel as if I showed during the rehearsal was remembering the choreography. As it
was quite fresh in my head there was many parts where my timing was o
ff
and I was coming in
with di
ff
erent movements quite late. To improve this aspect I will make sure that I work on the
timing of the various movements and gestures so that I get it correct in our next rehearsal of this
scene
After reviewing my SMART targets, I feel as if I achieved most of it. I believe I was very successful
when it came to my vocal skills, as not only did I hit the high note, I was also projecting my voice
with use of a good American accent throughout. I also feel as if I kept my energy up to match the
themes of this scene and I also e
ff
ectively embodied my character for the majority of it. However
2. the only aspects on my targets I believe I lacked in slightly was holding my characterisation while
making mistakes when it came to the choreography. However this is something that will be
fi
xed
when I work on getting my choreography correct.
Here you can see me hitting the high note “dude
I’m proud o
ff
you...”, which i had been struggling
to hit in previous rehearsals. You can also see
here I am e
ff
ectively project my voice outwards.
Here you can see I was late with the
choreography when I was supposed to
bend down at the same time as Al
fi
e.
Therefore next rehearsal I will focus on
my timing of movements and choreography.
