This document analyzes and summarizes two double page spreads from music magazines. The first is from Q magazine featuring an article on Florence + The Machine. It uses song lyrics in the headline and has three columns of text with some words bolded. The full page image shows Florence sitting on an American flag. The second is from Rolling Stone about Adele, with her name in varying large fonts for the headline. It uses taboo language from quotes and has a black and white close-up studio photo of Adele looking away. Both pages include the magazine masthead, page numbers, and website links at the bottom.

1. Double Page
Analysis
In this I will look at several double pages from magazines and
analyse them.

2. This is a double page spread from Q
magazine. The headline for this article
is ‘got the love’, and these are lyrics
from one of her songs. Using song lyrics
makes the article more personal and
unique. It also adds a sense of comedic
value to it. The next thing you might
see is the huge writing saying ‘USA’ at
the back of the page. This is in a huge
pale grey font, which almost blends in
with the background. This emphasises
on the USA and would entice American
readers. Aside from the headlines and
background the main body of text is
found in the bottom right hand corner.
They have used three columns, and as
well as the article there is a small
amount of text just above it which
gives you an insight of what the main
article is about. Back to the main text
on the page, the whole article starts of
with a huge letter, which is known as a
drop cap. I think that this gives the
article a higher quality to it, and also it
stands out from the page, which could
draw the reader in. Onto the content of
the text, overall the interview is quite
informal and the speech seems to be
reported speech. What I mean by this is
that its like a normal conversation and
he has just added in quotes of what
Florence said into the text, rather than
having a question and answer, then
question and answer. The writer has
not used any slang but they have used
taboo language within this article,
which I personally think is a good idea
for certain artists, because using taboo
language can show what type of
personality the band has as a whole.
Sometimes that can be good and
sometimes it can be bad. I would say
that Florence is someone, who does
regularly use taboo language.
As I mentioned before, there are three columns of text for this article. The first two columns are
much smaller than the last one, and you could say that they are just above half the size of the last
one. But the first two columns are small, because of the background and what is on the page. They
did not want their text to overlap with other features on the page, so that’s why the first two
columns are smaller. Furthermore, when reading the text we do not directly see the questions, as
they have been embedded within the text. This gives us the idea of it being a normal conversation.
Also thought-out the text there are a couple quotes which are in a bolder font. They have done this
because they want them to stand out. One of the quotes involves swearing whereas the other one
does not. Moreover, above the last column is ahs written who wrote the article and who took the
photos.
Now onto the image. There
is only one image that has
been used and it takes up
the whole first page of the
double page spread. This is
a full body shot, however
instead of Florence
standing up she is siting
down. The object that she
is sitting down on seems to
be a box, but the box is
covered by what seems to
be the American flag. She
as one leg up and one of
her arms is resting on it,
along with the other arm
holding onto the box which
is holding her upright. Her
overall outfit is all black
and having this with her
red hair makes both of
them stand out from each
other. As well as this
Florence is using direct
address, and what I mean
by this is that she is looking
directly into the camera
lens. Doing this can make
the audience connect with
the Florence. Also the
expression on her face
emphasise on the
connection that might
happen when looking at the
image. Furthermore, the
background for this image
has been taken in a studio.
I know this because they
have used a plain white
background. Doing so
means that everything else
will stand out from the
background, because there
is nothing going on in it.
In the top right hand corner is Florence's name
in white in a black box. I can not see anything
else as part of it has been cut of, but at the
bottom right hand corner there seems to be a
page number for that page.

3. This is a double page spread from the Rolling stones music magazine. The headline for this page is ‘The triumph of Adele’. This is
in bold black writing and has the biggest font on the page. As I was reading through the text I noticed that the writer used taboo
language within the article. Most of the language was quoted from Adele, and as we know Adele does use quite a lot of foul
language, but in a good way. Saying that most of the language was quoted by Adele, tells us that in the article the artist speaks
directly and it is not reported. Each word of the phrase ‘The triumph of Adele’ is in a different size. Doing so makes it stand out
more and also it brings your attention to the page, because the word Adele is in the biggest font and if you like her, then you
would instantly pic up that magazine, as you would like to read about her. Furthermore Below the title is a sentence which give
you an insight to what the article is about. Doing so is a very good idea because then it means the reader can already see what
the article is about specially without having to read it. This means they can instantly see what articles they are interested in and
which ones they are not. Below the short sentence, you then have the main article. Like most articles this one has started of
with a drop cap. This is when they start a sentence with the first letter being in a larger font. Doing this grabs the readers
attention.
Next to the text of the right hand
side of the page, is a close up of
Adele. This image takes of the
whole right hand side of the page
and possibly goes over the middle
to the other side. Just like the
writing and background the image
in black and white. Looking at the
background the location of the
photoshoot seems to be within a
studio. I personally think that a
studio would best suit this shoot
because we want everyone to
concentrate on Adele and not what
is going on behind her. Moreover,
Adele's facial expression is like the
majority of all her other
expressions on magazines. It is hard
to tell what type of expression it is
but simply Adele is looking away
from the camera but her face is
facing towards the camera, her lips
are slightly open and she seems to
have a concentrated look but also
relaxed look at the same time. She
has minimal make up on and her
hair has been brushed so it stands
out.
There are smaller
features that are found
on the page, such as
page numbers, websites
etc.. At the very
bottom of the page you
will find the page
number, which is in the
same font as the title.
Next to the page
number you will find
the masthead of the
magazine ‘Rolling
stone’. You will
generally find that most
magazines put their
masthead at the bottom
of the page. Also they
have put the link to
their website at the
bottom of the page as
well. They have done
this so people can
easily get to the
website.

4. This is a double page spread for Q music magazine. Looking on the page there is no distinctive title for the double page,
but there is a small title at the top of the page on the right hand corner which says ‘lady GAGA’. The use of the
capitalisation of the word ‘gaga’ emphasises it and makes it stand out more. Doing this could imply that they are calling
gaga which could mean crazy or something similar, (but in a good way). Below the title you then see the main article
which takes up a whole A4 page. There are three columns for this article and the font seems to be very small. The article
does use a drop cap but not at the very start of the article. It uses it half way down the first column, either way wherever
it is placed it still stands out and adds effect to the article. Moreover, there is a huge letter ‘L’ that takes up the whole
right hand page from top to bottom. As you can probably tell this stands for ‘Lady’. The letter ‘L’ is in the colour red, but
it is not too dark as you can see the black writing behind it quite clearly. Furthermore, the writer has used taboo
language, but as the writer has quoted Lady Gaga it is her who used the bad language. Personally this would be expected
from her as I think she is someone who would use bad language often.
Next to the article on the left had
side of the page is a medium shot
of Lady Gaga. Just like the
previous double page spread this
image is in black and white,
however only the page on the left
is in black and white. The one on
the right is in white, black and
red. Back to the image, Gaga is
looking directly into the camera.
Doing so tells us that she is tying
to connect with audience by
looking direct at us, This is known
as direct address. As well as this,
within the picture Lady Gaga is
topless, but she is covered up by
using her hands and some very
thick necklaces. Furthermore,
You can tell by the background
that this image has been take in a
studio and does not have a
certain location. I think that
having a location could distract
the reader from the image and
can distract them from what they
artist is trying to show.
At the very bottom
of the page you can
see the following:
The page number,
the masthead, date
of the issue and a
web link. Having the
page number is
important as without
them you might not
know what page you
are on and you would
find it more difficult
to find the page you
want. As well as that
it is good idea to put
the date of the issue
at the bottom as
even though it would
be on the front
cover, it is useful
having it on every
other page as you
can then easily see
when the issue came
out. Also it is a good
idea to have a web
link which tells you
where to start a
subscription,
because firstly they
would be bringing in
more money for
advertising their
subscription and it is
also useful for the
reader.
