Power electronics play a significant role in different areas of technology, more usage of power electronic devices lead to more harmonic content and various power quality issues in the system. Therefore, power quality gains more significance in the current era of research. Power electronics equipment’s with non-linear loads concludes with more harmonic disturbances and lower power factor. Harmonic impurities are the major problem ingredient due to the connection of non-linear load. To lessen the harmonics usually passive filters are used. The major objective of this work is to monitor and analyse the power quality of uninterrupted power supply by means of DAQ system that gathers real time data on the system and then the data is analysed using National Instruments LabVIEW. Once power quality analysis is done, a new technique of filter implementation using output transformer of the UPS was explored and passive filter was simulated using MATLAB/Simulink and then simulated filter was implemented in order to achieve power quality improvement.
Enhancement of power quality using microprocessor based shunt active power fi...IJECEIAES
Power quality is the most significant factor of power sector. The end user equipment such as induction motor, inverters, rectifiers inject harmonics into power system that influences the quality of power delivered. The presence of harmonics forces the use of instantaneous reactive power theory to calculate instantaneous power that helps in finding the compensating currents to eliminate harmonics. The control action required by active filter is accomplished by STM32F303RET6 microcontroller. Single phase induction motor is used as a dynamic nonlinear load in one of the three phases and resistive loads on the other two phases. TRIAC based RC triggering circuit was used to control the single phase induction motor. This paper presents the simulation and hardware implementation of shunt active power filter for 3 phase 4 wire unbalanced system. The hardware results show that THD in the source side has been reduced from 50.7% to 9.6% by implementing the SAPF.

The demand for Electrical energy is increasing day by day as it can be easily converted to another form of energy. All consumers expect Electrical energy with high power quality. Most of the commercial and industrial loads are inductive in nature and need power electronic circuits/ controllers to get smooth control of the equipment. This, in turn, leads to the injection of harmonics into the system, hence the power quality is affected. The above problem needs to be addressed and eliminated. In this paper, a shunt active power filter is used to mitigate the harmonics. Id-Iq control is used to analyse the performance of the filter and is simulated using MATLAB software. The MPPT controller is used to improving the power quality of the system.

In This paper we present experimental comparative study of feedBack Linearized and Proportional Integral (PI) Controller of the DC bus voltage of three phase shunt Active Power Filter (APF). The FeedBack Linearized and PI controllers are introduced to improve tracking performance characteristics, power quality and minimized consumption of the reactive power. The algorithm used to identify the reference currents is based on the Self Tuning Filter (STF). The firing pulses of the IGBTs inverter are generated using a hysteresis current controller; which is implemented on an analogue card. Finally, the above study, under steady state and transient conditions, is illustrated with signal-flow graphs and corresponding analysis. This study was verified by experimental tests on hardware prototype based on dSPACE-1104. The experimental results show the feasibility and the effectiveness of the designed active filter, associated with Feedback Linearized and PI controllers and are capability in meeting the IEEE 519-1992 recommended harmonic standard limits.

The designed three phase SAPF based on instantaneous p-q theory was simulated in MATLAB /SIMULINK by using different load conditions i.e. R-L load, suddenly connected R-L load, and additional unbalance R load. Its application was successfully proved and the validity achieved by minimizing the harmonics and improving PF as summarized in Table 2. Consequently, the supply current is almost pure sinusoidal. THD observed was fund to be within the prescribed limits of 5% as recommended by IEEE-519 standard.
The extensive use of non-linear loads in industry becomes increasingly a serious problem that affects the quality of energy delivered to customers. Therefore, the shunt active power filter (SAPF) has emerged as an important industrial tool to eliminate induced harmonic currents and compensating of reactive power. This paper proposes an improved control configuration for SAPF based on a modern technique called predictive direct power control (Predictive-DPC). The principle of this control is based on the direct regulation of the instantaneous active and reactive powers to guarantee a good energy quality on the grid side. For this purpose the appropriate average voltage vector which cancels power tracking errors is calculated by a simple predictive model at the bigining of each control period. This type of control includes various features such as the lack of look up table (LUTs) and closed current loops and the constant switching frequency is achieved through the use of PWM modulation. The results of the simulation process show a high performance in the steady and transient state function for predictive-DPC control that might be a reasonable alternative to conventional DPC in the field of active power filtering.

The increase of power electronic converters at the end-user side is unavoidable and it will cause current harmonic distortion and wide range of disturbance in the power system (PS). This paper presents current harmonic compensation for the test case of the Quaid-e-Awam University College of Engineering Sciences and Technology (QUCEST) Larkana campus in MATLAB SIMULINK by using three types of power filters i.e. passive, active and hybrid power filters. The purpose of this experiment and simulation model is to analyse and find out the best solution for reducing the current harmonic and unbalanced load condition at the incoming transformer to the campus. Moreover, this paper presents the testing and comparison of the active and hybrid power filters by using the combined design technique of harmonic compensate control system based on Unit Vector Template (UVT) and Instantaneous Reactive Power (IRP) theory. The simulation results allow to identify the effectiveness of the control system along with passive filter. Based on the testing and simulation results of three types of power filters, hybrid power filter has the maximum ability to mitigate the current harmonic in the system, and it also reduces the neutral current thus causing less stress in the existing system.
Power System Contingency Ranking Using Fast Decoupled Load Flow Methodpaperpublications3
Abstract: Voltage instability is the phenomena associated with heavily loaded power systems. It is normally aggravated due to large disturbance. The Power system security is one of the significant aspects, where the proper action needs to be taken for the unseen contingency. In the event of contingency, the most serious threat to operation and control of power system is insecurity. Therefore, the contingency analysis is a key for the power system security. The contingency ranking using the performance index is a method for the line outages in a power system, which ranks the highest performance index line first and proceeds in a descending manner based on the calculated PI for all the line outages. This helps to take the prior action to keep the system secure. In this paper Fast Decoupled power flow method is used for the power system contingency ranking for the line outage based on the Active power and Voltage performance index. The ranking is given by considering the overall performance index, which is the summation of Active power and voltage performance index. The proposed method is implemented on a IEEE-14 bus system.

This paper focuses on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) controller based Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) for mitigating the harmonics of the distribution system. To increase the performance of the conventional controller and take advantage of smart controllers, a feed forward-type (trained by a back propagation algorithm) ANN-based technique is implemented in shunt active power filters for producing the controlled pulses required for IGBT inverter. The proposed approach mainly work on the principle of capacitor energy to maintain the DC link voltage of a shunt connected filter and thus reduces the transient response time when there is abrupt variation in the load. The entire power system block set model of the proposed scheme has been developed in MATLAB environment. Simulations are carried out by using MATLAB, it is noticed that the %THD is reduced to 2.27% from 29.71% by ANN controlled filter. The simulated experimental results also show that the novel control method is not only easy to be computed and implemented, but also very successful in reducing harmonics.

Unified Power Quality Conditioner Model Based with Series and Shunt FiltersIAES-IJPEDS
With the increase of the complexion in the power distribution system, it is very possible that several kinds of power quality disturbances are happened in a power distribution system simultaneously. This paper proposes a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) including a series and a shunt active power filter (APF) to compensate harmonics in both the distorted supply voltage and nonlinear load current. In the series APF control scheme, a proportional-integral (PI) controller, meanwhile a PI controller and are designed in the shunt APF control scheme to relieve harmonic currents produced by nonlinear loads. The DC voltage is maintained constant using Two degree of freedom proportional integral voltage controller (2DoFPI). The performance of the proposed UPQC is significantly improved compared to the conventional control strategy. The feasibility of the proposed UPQC control scheme is validated through the simulations.
Application of Unified Power Flow Controller in Nigeria Power System for Impr...ijtsrd
With the increased rate of urbanization and industrialization, the Nigerian electric power system is being put under pressure, high power losses which has led to fluctuation in voltage level. In this work the Nigeria 330Kv network of 42 bus system was considered. Data for the analysis were obtained from Transmission Company of Nigeria National Control Centre, Osogbo TCN and MATLAB PSAT software with newton Raphson's solution method embedded in it was used to carry out the analysis. The results of the analysis showed that many of the bus voltages were outside the voltage limits of ±5 i.e 0.95pu 1.05pu . After compensation with Flexible AC Transmission System devices FACTs namely Unified Power Flow Controller UPFC which can be used to control power flow on a transmission line, the voltage profile almost flat with bus voltages within acceptable voltage limits. It is also evident that the UPFC is device that can used to combat the voltage problem in the Nigerian electric power system. Adikaibe James | Prof. Engr. F. O. Harmonic analysis and Power factor improvement with UPQC under two Novel cont...IJERA Editor
This paper presents unified power quality conditioner (UPQC)for power quality improvements in terms of
harmonics compensation and power factor correction in a three-phase four-wire distribution system. The UPQC
is implemented with PWM controlled voltage source converter (VSC) and switching patterns are generated
through Indirect PI and Synchronous Reference Frame controller. The selected topology for voltage source
converter is the three-leg and six-leg VSC for Indirect PI and Synchronous reference frame (SRF) control
strategies respectively. The behavior of UPQC has been analyzed by considering a case study with switching of
three phase half bridge diode rectifier and a parallel star connected unbalanced R-L loads. Harmonic spectrum
of the source current and load voltage are compared in between without UPQC and with UPQC by considering
both control strategies. The complete system has been modeled using MATLAB software with its stimulus’s
sim power system toolboxes.
The aim of this research is the speed tracking of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using an intelligent Neural-Network based adapative backstepping control. First, the model of PMSM in the Park synchronous frame is derived. Then, the PMSM speed regulation is investigated using the classical method utilizing the field oriented control theory. Thereafter, a robust nonlinear controller employing an adaptive backstepping strategy is investigated in order to achieve a good performance tracking objective under motor parameters changing and external load torque application. In the final step, a neural network estimator is integrated with the adaptive controller to estimate the motor parameters values and the load disturbance value for enhancing the effectiveness of the adaptive backstepping controller. The robsutness of the presented control algorithm is demonstrated using simulation tests. The obtained results clearly demonstrate that the presented NN-adaptive control algorithm can provide good trackingperformances for the speed trackingin the presence of motor parameter variation and load application.
This paper presents a fast and accurate fault detection, classification and direction discrimination algorithm of transmission lines using one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1D-CNNs) that have ingrained adaptive model to avoid the feature extraction difficulties and fault classification into one learning algorithm. A proposed algorithm is directly usable with raw data and this deletes the need of a discrete feature extraction method resulting in more effective protective system. The proposed approach based on the three-phase voltages and currents signals of one end at the relay location in the transmission line system are taken as input to the proposed 1D-CNN algorithm. A 132kV power transmission line is simulated by Matlab simulink to prepare the training and testing data for the proposed 1D- CNN algorithm. The testing accuracy of the proposed algorithm is compared with other two conventional methods which are neural network and fuzzy neural network. The results of test explain that the new proposed detection system is efficient and fast for classifying and direction discrimination of fault in transmission line with high accuracy as compared with other conventional methods under various conditions of faults.
Among the most widespread renewable energy sources is solar energy; Solar panels offer a green, clean, and environmentally friendly source of energy. In the presence of several advantages of the use of photovoltaic systems, the random operation of the photovoltaic generator presents a great challenge, in the presence of a critical load. Among the most used solutions to overcome this problem is the combination of solar panels with generators or with the public grid or both. In this paper, an energy management strategy is proposed with a safety aspect by using artificial neural networks (ANNs), in order to ensure a continuous supply of electricity to consumers with a maximum solicitation of renewable energy.
In this paper, the artificial neural network (ANN) has been utilized for rotating machinery faults detection and classification. First, experiments were performed to measure the lateral vibration signals of laboratory test rigs for rotor-disk-blade when the blades are defective. A rotor-disk-blade system with 6 regular blades and 5 blades with various defects was constructed. Second, the ANN was applied to classify the different x- and y-axis lateral vibrations due to different blade faults. The results based on training and testing with different data samples of the fault types indicate that the ANN is robust and can effectively identify and distinguish different blade faults caused by lateral vibrations in a rotor. As compared to the literature, the present paper presents a novel work of identifying and classifying various rotating blade faults commonly encountered in rotating machines using ANN. Experimental data of lateral vibrations of the rotor-disk-blade system in both x- and y-directions are used for the training and testing of the network.
This paper focuses on the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, which is a nonlinear optimization problem. is proposed to find the optimal power flow (OPF). To solve this problem, we will apply the ABC algorithm to a power system incorporating wind power. The proposed approach is applied on a standard IEEE-30 system with wind farms located on different buses and with different penetration levels to show the impact of wind farms on the system in order to obtain the optimal settings of control variables of the OPF problem. Based on technical results obtained, the ABC algorithm is shown to achieve a lower cost and losses than the other methods applied, while incorporating wind power into the system, high performance would be gained.
The significance of the solar energy is to intensify the effectiveness of the Solar Panel with the use of a primordial solar tracking system. Here we propounded a solar positioning system with the use of the global positioning system (GPS) , artificial neural network (ANN) and image processing (IP) . The azimuth angle of the sun is evaluated using GPS which provide latitude, date, longitude and time. The image processing used to find sun image through which centroid of sun is calculated and finally by comparing the centroid of sun with GPS quadrate to achieve optimum tracking point. Weather conditions and situation observed through AI decision making with the help of IP algorithms. The presented advance adaptation is analyzed and established via experimental effects which might be made available on the memory of the cloud carrier for systematization. The proposed system improve power gain by 59.21% and 10.32% compare to stable system (SS) and two-axis solar following system (TASF) respectively. The reduced tracking error of IoT based Two-axis solar following system (IoT-TASF) reduces their azimuth angle error by 0.20 degree.
Kosovo has limited renewable energy resources and its power generation sector is based on fossil fuels. Such a situation emphasizes the importance of active research and efficient use of renewable energy potential. According to the analysis of meteorological data for Kosovo, it can be concluded that among the most attractive potential wind power sites are the locations known as Kitka (42° 29' 41" N and 21° 36' 45" E) and Koznica (42° 39′ 32″ N, 21° 22′30″E). The two terrains in which the analysis was carried out are mountain areas, with altitudes of 1142 m (Kitka) and 1230 m (Koznica). the same measuring height, about 84 m above the ground, is obtained for these average wind speeds: Kitka 6,667 m/s and Koznica 6,16 m/s. Since the difference in wind speed is quite large versus a difference in altitude that is not being very large, analyses are made regarding the terrain characteristics including the terrain relief features. In this paper it will be studied how much the roughness of the terrain influences the output energy. Also, that the assumption to be taken the same as to how much they will affect the annual energy produced.
Large-scale grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) station are increasing rapidly. However, this large penetration of PV system creates frequency fluctuation in the grid due to the intermittency of solar irradiance. Therefore, in this paper, a robust droop control mechanism of the battery energy storage system (BESS) is developed in order to damp the frequency fluctuation of the multi-machine grid system due to variable active power injected from the PV panel. The proposed droop control strategy incorporates frequency error signal and dead-band for effective minimization of frequency fluctuation. The BESS system is used to consume/inject an effective amount of active power based upon the frequency oscillation of the grid system. The simulation analysis is carried out using PSCAD/EMTDC software to prove the effectiveness of the proposed droop control-based BESS system. The simulation result implies that the proposed scheme can efficiently curtail the frequency oscillation.
This study investigates experimentally the performance of two-dimensional solar tracking systems with reflector using commercial silicon based photovoltaic module, with open and closed loop control systems. Different reflector materials were also investigated. The experiments were performed at the Hashemite University campus in Zarqa at a latitude of 32⁰, in February and March. Photovoltaic output power and performance were analyzed. It was found that the modified photovoltaic module with mirror reflector generated the highest value of power, while the temperature reached a maximum value of 53 ̊ C. The modified module suggested in this study produced 5% more PV power than the two-dimensional solar tracking systems without reflector and produced 12.5% more PV power than the fixed PV module with 26⁰ tilt angle.
This paper focuses on the modeling and control of a wind energy conversion chain using a permanent magnet synchronous machine. This system behaves a turbine, a generator, DC/DC and DC/AC power converters. These are connected on both sides to the DC bus, where the inverter is followed by a filter which is connected to the grid. In this paper, we have been used two types of controllers. For the stator side converter, we consider the Takagi-Sugeno approach where the parameters of controller have been computed by the theory of linear matrix inequalities. The stability synthesis has been checked using the Lyapunov theory. According to the grid side converter, the proportional integral controller is exploited to keep a constant voltage on the DC bus and control both types of powers. The simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the approach used.
The development of modeling wind speed plays a very important in helping to obtain the actual wind speed data for the benefit of the power plant planning in the future. The wind speed in this paper is obtained from a PCE-FWS 20 type measuring instrument with a duration of 30 minutes which is accumulated into monthly data for one year (2019). Despite the many wind speed modeling that has been done by researchers. Modeling wind speeds proposed in this study were obtained from the modified Rayleigh distribution. In this study, the Rayleigh scale factor (Cr) and modified Rayleigh scale factor (Cm) were calculated. The observed wind speed is compared with the predicted wind characteristics. The data fit test used correlation coefficient (R2), root means square error (RMSE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). The results of the proposed modified Rayleigh model provide very good results for users.

The solar system is designed with main parts: photovoltaic (PV) panel, direct current/direct current (DC/DC) converter, inverter, filter, and in addition, the battery is used to save energy in the event that there is an increased demand for energy and not to provide solar radiation, as well as saving energy in the case of generation more than demand. This work was done using the matrix laboratory (MATLAB) simulink program.
The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current state of renewable energy resources in Bangladesh, as well as to examine various forms of renewable energies in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of how to address Bangladesh's power crisis issues in a sustainable manner. Electricity is currently the most useful kind of energy in Bangladesh. It has a substantial influence on a country's socioeconomic standing and living standards. Maintaining a stable source of energy at a cost that is affordable to everyone has been a constant battle for decades. Bangladesh is blessed with a wealth of natural resources. Bangladesh has a huge opportunity to accelerate its economic development while increasing energy access, livelihoods, and health for millions of people in a sustainable way due to the renewable energy system.
When the irradiance distribution over the photovoltaic panels is uniform, the pursuit of the maximum power point is not reached, which has allowed several researchers to use traditional MPPT techniques to solve this problem Among these techniques a PSO algorithm is used to have the maximum global power point (GMPPT) under partial shading. On the other hand, this one is not reliable vis-à-vis the pursuit of the MPPT. Therefore, in this paper we have treated another technique based on a new modified PSO algorithm so that the power can reach its maximum point. The PSO algorithm is based on the heuristic method which guarantees not only the obtaining of MPPT but also the simplicity of control and less expensive of the system. The results are obtained using MATLAB show that the proposed modified PSO algorithm performs better than conventional PSO and is robust to different partial shading models.
A stable operation of wind turbines connected to the grid is an essential requirement to ensure the reliability and stability of the power system. To achieve such operational objective, installing static synchronous compensator static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) as a main compensation device guarantees the voltage stability enhancement of the wind farm connected to distribution network at different operating scenarios. STATCOM either supplies or absorbs reactive power in order to ensure the voltage profile within the standard-margins and to avoid turbine tripping, accordingly. This paper present new study that investigates the most suitable-location to install STATCOM in a distribution system connected wind farm to maintain the voltage-levels within the stability margins. For a large-scale squirrel cage induction generator squirrel-cage induction generator (SCIG-based) wind turbine system, the impact of STATCOM installation was tested in different places and voltage-levels in the distribution system. The proposed method effectiveness in enhancing the voltage profile and balancing the reactive power is validated, the results were repeated for different scenarios of expected contingencies. The voltage profile, power flow, and reactive power balance of the distribution system are observed using MATLAB/Simulink software.
The electrical and environmental parameters of polymer solar cells (PSC) provide important information on their performance. In the present article we study the influence of temperature on the voltage-current (I-V) characteristic at different temperatures from 10 °C to 90 °C, and important parameters like bandgap energy Eg, and the energy conversion efficiency η. The one-diode electrical model, normally used for semiconductor cells, has been tested and validated for the polemeral junction. The PSC used in our study are formed by the poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). Our technique is based on the combination of two steps; the first use the Least Mean Squares (LMS) method while the second use the Newton-Raphson algorithm. The found results are compared to other recently published works, they show that the developed approach is very accurate. This precision is proved by the minimal values of statistical errors (RMSE) and the good agreement between both the experimental data and the I-V simulated curves. The obtained results show a clear and a monotonic dependence of the cell efficiency on the studied parameters.
The inverter is the principal part of the photovoltaic (PV) systems that assures the direct current/alternating current (DC/AC) conversion (PV array is connected directly to an inverter that converts the DC energy produced by the PV array into AC energy that is directly connected to the electric utility). In this paper, we present a simple method for detecting faults that occurred during the operation of the inverter. These types of faults or faults affect the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the photovoltaic system, especially the inverter, which is the main component responsible for the conversion. Hence, we have shown first the faults obtained in the case of the short circuit. Second, the open circuit failure is studied. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method. Good monitoring and detection of faults in the inverter can increase the system's reliability and decrease the undesirable faults that appeared in the PV system. The system behavior is tested under variable parameters and conditions using MATLAB/Simulink.
The electrical distribution network is undergoing tremendous modifications with the introduction of distributed generation technologies which have led to an increase in fault current levels in the distribution network. Fault current limiters have been developed as a promising technology to limit fault current levels in power systems. Though, quite a number of fault current limiters have been developed; the most common are the superconducting fault current limiters, solid-state fault current limiters, and saturated core fault current limiters. These fault current limiters present potential fault current limiting solutions in power systems. Nevertheless, they encounter various challenges hindering their deployment and commercialization. This research aimed at designing a bridge-type nonsuperconducting fault current limiter with a novel topology for distribution network applications. The proposed bridge-type nonsuperconducting fault current limiter was designed and simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results showed the effectiveness of the proposed design in fault current limiting, voltage sag compensation during fault conditions, and its ability not to affect the load voltage and current during normal conditions as well as in suppressing the source powers during fault conditions. Simulation results also showed very minimal power loss by the fault current limiter during normal conditions.
This paper provides a new approach to reducing high-order harmonics in 400 Hz inverter using a three-level neutral-point clamped (NPC) converter. A voltage control loop using the harmonic compensation combined with NPC clamping diode control technology. The capacitor voltage imbalance also causes harmonics in the output voltage. For 400 Hz inverter, maintain a balanced voltage between the two input (direct current) (DC) capacitors is difficult because the pulse width modulation (PWM) modulation frequency ratio is low compared to the frequency of the output voltage. A method of determining the current flowing into the capacitor to control the voltage on the two balanced capacitors to ensure fast response reversal is also given in this paper. The combination of a high-harmonic resonator controller and a neutral-point voltage controller working together on the 400 Hz NPC inverter structure is given in this paper.
Direct current (DC) electronic load is a useful equipment for testing the electrical system. It can emulate various load at a high rating. The electronic load requires a power converter to operate and a linear regulator is a common option. Nonetheless, it is hard to control due to the temperature variation. This paper proposed a DC electronic load using the boost converter. The proposed electronic load operates in the continuous current mode and control using the integral controller. The electronic load using the boost converter is compared with the electronic load using the linear regulator. The results show that the boost converter able to operate as an electronic load with an error lower than 0.5% and response time lower than 13 ms.

overwhelm these drawbacks, a unified power quality conditioner was used linking shunt APF and series
APF, UPQC can increase voltage and also current quality [4]-[6].
The fast growth of power electronics technology lead to the huge usage of non-linear, rectifier and
impulse loads in the power grid [7]. The above mentioned loads creates harmonic contamination in power
system and increases source voltage hindrances. The traditional power quality monitoring devices usually
works in offline mode and it is measured by power quality indicator [8-9]. These equipments does not have
the functions of complete measurement, statistical analysis and conclusion. The power quality monitoring
system network completely observes the power quality. On-line monitoring of electric load by PLC based
system provides access to a web page wherein the current waveforms of electric load can be examined was
discussed in literature [10]. An electrical power quality evaluation scheme is developed by using web-based
distributed measurement system was highlighted in the paper [11] wherein, a network power quality monitor
system was established. Web centered network monitoring system has independent language, cross-platform,
cross-regional and fast transmission characteristics. Monitoring and managing the power quality through a
browser is done very easily by the workers. Meanwhile, the necessities of real-time, accessability and
reliability are confirmed. An idea on shunt hybrid filter design using PQ theory in order to improve the power
quality for 3 phase distribution system feeding various non-linear loads was proposed in literature [12]. An
Artificial Neural Network controller based shunt active power filter produces the controlled pulses needed for
IGBT inverter in order to mitigate the harmonics of distribution system was discussed [13].
The main goal of this work is to monitor and analyse the power quality of uninterrupted power
supply using a DAQ system that collects real time data on the system and then the data is analysed using
National Instruments LabVIEW. Once power quality analysis is done, a new technique of filter
implementation using output transformer of the UPS was explored and passive filter is simulated with
MATLAB/Simulink then the simulated filter was implemented in order to achieve power quality
improvement.
2. CIRCUIT ANALYSIS AND METHODOLOGY
PQ monitoring system comprises of both hardware and software modules. It has current and voltage
sensors. The UPS is connected to load (i.e. 10 computers). Power quality analysis is progressed with the aid
of a DAQ system, which gathers real time data on the system. Later the data is analysed with the assistance
of National Instruments LabVIEW. Once analysis is done appropriate filter is chosen, simulated with
MATLAB/Simulink and then implemented. The Figure 1 below shows the block diagram of power quality
monitoring system.

Filter Implementation using Output Transformer of UPS for Power Quality Improvement (Anandh N)
1253
A PC centered power quality analyser, comprising a group of tools in one real-time system,
proficient to run all devices in parallel and can be easily accessible in future. Based on recent IEC and EN
standards, measurement and data processing procedures are accounted and have a remote accessible
instruments through ethernet design following SPIPI standard. A software application can be developed by
using the National Instruments LabVIEW graphical development environment that behaves as instrument
firmware. The current sensor is attached serially with input and voltage sensor is connected in parallel with
supply and UPS. This work combines monitoring of power quality of single phase UPS. The data analysis
was done on PC using National Instruments LabVIEW. The input data is 24 bit sampled at 50kS/s.
2.1. Power Quality Monitoring
To process and display the gathered data from the sensors LabVIEW 2015 32-bit version with
electrical power suite add-on is used. Power quality monitoring system has indicators to indicate THDi,
IHD1, IHD3, IHD5, IHD7, IHD9, distorted power factor, active power, FFT spectrum of current waveform. It
also shows RMS values of current and voltage with the aid of gauges and numeric indicators. Data from
DAQ assistant contains data from all the connected sensors. Hence, it is divided and each signal is multiplied
with its matching multiplication factor. Later RMS waveforms of current and voltage to be used in
calculation of active, reactive and apparent power flowing through the system.
Amplitude and measurement blocks determine the RMS values of current and voltage. Spectral
measurements block is utilised for FFT analysis of current waveform. FFT analysis of voltage waveform is
not done because voltage waveform appears perfectly sinusoidal without any abnormalities. Once all the
required variables are calculated the data is to be stored in an excel sheet. IHDn calculation was done in a sub
VI. IHD value upto 9th
harmonic component was calculated. Distortion measurement block is used to
calculate specific harmonic current value for each component. Then the specific harmonic current value is
separated with specific harmonic current of fundamental to get IHD value.
2.2. Power Factor Calculation
Power factor calculation in systems with non-sinusoidal load current is different from that of
sinusoidal load current systems. To calculate power factor in such cases distortion power factor is to be taken
into account. In case of normal loads PF is calculated by
PF = =
( )
Where, Ɵ is phase angle of voltage and ɸ is phase angle of current. But in case of non-linear loads
PF
( )
Distorted Power factor (DPF) ( )
Inductance of transformer is measured by short circuit test. In standard SC test, current and voltage
transducers are used rather than using wattmeter and voltmeter. Values from these sensors is processed using
LabVIEW. Values of power, resistance, impedance, reactance and inductance of the transformer are
calculated pertaining to low voltage side of the transformer. MATLAB/Simulink is used for simulation of
designed filter because it is difficult to simulate with non-linear load. Therefore, supply current is simulated
to match the observed current. This is done by connecting current sources of different amplitudes and
frequency in parallel. Filter is simulated using a RLC series component by giving appropriate R, L, C values.
A current measurement block and scope is used to observe the waveform. A powergui block is added and
FFT analysis for the simulated circuit is carried out.

The data acquisition system is connected to PC which is running LabVIEW software.
2.4. Passive Filter Calculation
Initial power quality study was done on a 3 KVA UPS and the filter configuration calculation.
Passive shunt filters fundamentally consist of serial connection of an inductor and a capacitor adjusted to a
certain frequency and behaves as low-impedance path for the harmonics. Initial capacitor size is calculated
from reactive power requirement (Qc) of the load.
Value of Capacitor (Cn) =
Where, Qc - Reactive Power; m - number of branches in passive filter; Vs - fundamental voltage per phase.
To eliminate nth
current harmonics, the nth
-order inductor is calculated as
Ln =
The series resistance for the nth
-order filter inductor is calculated as
Rn =
The values of capacitance obtained for mitigation of 3rd
and 5th
harmonic components are not
manufactured for single phase system because factor of safety goes down. For this reason, power quality
study was done on a modular 1 KVA UPS. In this configuration instead of using external inductance,
inductance of output transformer is used. To limit high di/dt in the circuit, additional inductance is added.
This inductance value was also designed to change effective value of inductance in the circuit and to change
capacitance value to values easily available in the market. The Figure 3 shows the filter implementation using

internal transformer of UPS. Since, inductance value is fixed from the measured inductance of transformer
and additional inductance is to be chosen, the capacitance value easily available in the market for single
phase systems are 2.5 uF, 8 uF and 50 uF. The Figure 4 shows the passive filter implementation in our
laboratory.

The above picture displays the passive filter implementation for mitigating 5th
harmonic component
using 50 mfd x 3 and 8 mfd x 3 capacitors. These capacitors are connected in parallel to get 164 mfd
capacitor bank. This capacitor bank and the inductance from the components of the UPS act as a single tuned
passive filter. Thus 5th
harmonic component is mitigated.
3. RESULT ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSIONS
3.1.1. KVA UPS System Results
When filter calculation where done for 3 KVA system the values for a passive filter components for
reducing 3rd
harmonic component was, Capacitance: 7650 Micro farad, Inductance: 147 Micro henry. The
passive filter components value for reducing 5th
harmonic component was, Capacitance: 7650 Micro farad,
Inductance: 52.9 Micro henry. This value of capacitance is not manufactured for low powered single phase
systems because factor of safety becomes low. For this reason, we had to do power quality analysis on a
lower model 1 KVA UPS. Figure 5 and 6 shows the current waveform and FFT analysis of harmonic
spectrum with load as 6 systems of 1 KVA UPS. Figure 7 shows the IHD 5 variation with time. Figure 8

3.2. Filtered Output Results of I KVA UPS System
Transformer is used as inductor for the passive filter. Inductance value of transformer is measured
using short circuit test. Short circuit on transformer was done with standard method but with aid of current,
voltage sensors and LabVIEW. The transformer is part of the UPS. The transformer is rated at 1 KVA,
45/230 V. The passive filter is shunt connected to the transformer on LV side. Filter uses inductance of
transformer for L of filter. Capacitance used was 164 mfd. This was used to remove 5th
harmonic component.
Capacitance required to remove 3rd
harmonic component is 451 mfd. When 164 mfd capacitor was connected
the power through the transformer exceed the limit. For that reason, 451 mfd was not connected. Therefore, it
difficult to implement harmonic filter for single phase low powered systems. As the power rating increases
availability of required capacitance value also increases. Since the system was single phase low power rated,
passive filter branch to remove 3rd
harmonic component was not implemented. With the connection of a filter
branch the core of the transformer starts vibrating due to resonance between the filter branch and remaining
system. For this reason, filter required to remove 3rd
harmonic component was not connected as the
capacitance required is higher and the vibration caused because of that branch might spoil the transformer.
As it can be observed from above picture 5th
harmonic component value decreased. THDi value improved.
Initial value of THD was at 92 %. Figure 10 and 11 shows the current waveform for 1 KVA system and FFT

Figure 12. Power Factor vs Load Current
Initial analysis on power quality of the system showed high harmonic content with 3rd
and 5th
harmonic components dominating and power factor value was poor. With the implementation of shunt
passive filter branch to reduce 5th
harmonic component THDi value decreased and power factor value
improved.
4. CONCLUSION
A complete power quality analysis on the system was done and various mitigation techniques were
studied. The deep understanding of mitigation schemes made us to select passive filter for simulation and
implementation. While implementing the mitigation technique a new method of implementation of filter
circuit was explored. Implementation of filter by means of output transformer of the UPS was done. The
main constraint of such scheme is the power rating of the filter, because the amount of power flows through
the transformer is fixed during the design of UPS. Adding extra circuits will rises the power flowing through
the transformer and surpasses its limit. While surpassing its limit the transformer core begins to vibrate and
starts making noise. This limits the quantity of harmonic contents and can be detached easily. Alternatively
this work can be implemented by using active filters or unified power quality compensators or shunt active
compensators. Though this work concentrates on low powered system similar principles and techniques can
be stretched to high powered systems and three phase systems.
