This document discusses the Filipino value of nonviolence through examining indigenous metaphors and parables. It explores the Filipino perception of violence as destructive and life-denying, as shown through sayings about living and dying by violence. The value of nonviolence is seen in sayings advocating responding to aggression with kindness, like repaying stones with bread, and quelling violence with compassion instead of more violence, like using cold water to put out fire. This is illustrated through parables of the bending rose plant and yielding bamboo, showing the wisdom of avoiding rather than confronting violence.
