Fig is a tool that allows developers to easily create isolated development environments using Docker containers. It manages multiple related containers through a single configuration file, making it simple to start complex application stacks locally. With Fig, developers can define their applications and dependencies in Dockerfiles, combine them in a fig.yml configuration file, and then use Fig to build, start, and manage the entire stack with a single command. This improves the development workflow by making it faster and more consistent to test applications across different environments.

DockerCon EU 2015: Continuous Integration with Jenkins, Docker and Compose

Oxford University Press (OUP) recently started the Oxford Global Languages (OGL) initiative (http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/words/oxfordlanguages) which aims at providing language resources for digitally under represented languages. In August 2015 OUP launched two African languages websites for Zulu (http://zu.oxforddictionaries.com) and Northern Sotho (http://nso.oxforddictionaries.com). The backend of these websites is based on an API retrieving data in RDF from a triple store and delivering data to the frontend in JSON-LD.
The entire micro-service infrastructure for development, staging, and production runs on Docker containers in Amazon EC2 instances. In particular, we use Jenkins to rebuild the Docker image for the API based on a Python Flask application and Docker Compose to orchestrate the containers. A typical CI workflow is as follows:
- a developer commits code to the codebase
- Jenkins triggers a job to run unit tests
- if the unit tests are successful, the Docker image of the Python Flask application is rebuilt and the container is restarted via Docker Compose
- if the unit tests or the Docker build failed, the monitor view shows the Jenkins jobs in red and displays the name of the possible culprit who broke the build.

There are literally tens of thousands of images available today in the public DockerHub repository. These images cover almost every possible distro and common open source tool, server, or application that exists today. But there has been one drawback--all of these images assume you are on the most commonly used platform: 64-bit Intel Linux. In late 2015 and 2016 the Docker development community and Docker distribution team have enabled a new registry image specification that supports packaging multiple architecture and OS layer images within the same repository name and tag. This allows a common image, say "mysql:latest", to contain references to images for all supported OS and architectures that the packager determines to make available. Now a `docker run` or `docker pull` of "mysql:latest" will work seamlessly across all supported architectures. In this talk we will demonstrate the packaging and running of a multi-architecture containerized application on several different supported Docker platforms like ARM, POWER, and System z.

In this talk, we will discuss the construction of a CI/CD pipeline consisting of Docker Engine, GitHub, Jenkins, Docker Registry and calm.io. The pipeline will be kicked off by a commit to a GitHub repository. The commit will cause Jenkins to run a build job and, upon successful completion of that job, push a Docker image up to Docker Registry. Once the new docker image is made available, Jenkins will trigger calm.io to deploy the new images on staging and production systems.

For Eclipse Mars the Eclipse Linux Tools and JBoss Tools team have been working on providing tooling for Docker.
The Docker tooling is multi-platform and runs on Linux, OSX and Windows. It allows you to build and run images and manage containers while connected to multiple Docker daemons.
This talk will demonstrate how to use Docker with the tools and how to use it together with other technologies like native CDT builds and server tools for Java middleware.

It's 2018. Are My Containers Secure Yet!?
A talk given at DevOps Pro Vilnius on March 15, 2018 about container security. In this talk we discussed the core topics around the container ecosystem (host, runtime, image) applicable to both Docker and Kubernetes, as well as discussing usable security/secure by default, and defense in depth principles. Also discussed were security futures like Project Grafeas, libentitlement, LinuxKit concepts, and trusted/untrusted container runtimes in Kubernetes.

How To Make A Framework Plugin That Does Not Suck
Eclipse plugins that tries to support a specific framework such as Hibernate, JPA, servlets, Struts, Spring, Drools, log4j, etc. all have many of the same challenges but somehow they have a tendency to solve it differently and we end up with a fractured IDE from a usability and architectural perspective.
It seems like everyone understands what functionallity that is specific for their framework, but forget to consider issues like multiple version support, classpath libraries, debugging/launching and coexistence with other 3rd party framework plugins.
After working five years with this in context of JBoss Tools and Eclipse itself I came to realize a lot of this fracture is caused by either not using already existing functionallity available in Eclipse API's or simply not realizing how little effort it actually takes to handle these common issues.
This talk will outline the identified issues and present patterns and in some cases implementation for how framework plugins should be done so they work well within the majority of the Eclipse Java ecosystem.
Using Docker to Develop, Test and Run Maven Projects - Wouter Danes
Docker recently hit version 1.0 and is being picked up around the world by Ops teams to ease running their applications. Docker can also play a big role in easing the development of applications. Rollback: The Impossible Dream
Roll back doesn’t exist. It’s not real. It’s a fantasy, a dream, a delusion. Any vendor who tells you they have a roll back capability is lying to you. And lying to you in a downright dangerous way that will come back to haunt you at 4am in a war room when someone says:
“We can’t fix this. Let’s roll back the deployment.”
This talk is designed to explain and demonstrate to Operations staff:
Why roll back is a fantasy and explained with a dash of Werner Heisenberg
Why it is dangerous and how you can recognize when you’re about to get trapped
How you can avoid falling into that trap of considering it an appropriate compensating control.
It’ll also explain what you can actually do operationally instead of “rolling back”. This will cover other alternative compensating controls that can help you get running again and resolve your outage whilst still allowing you to find root cause.
Software archaeology for beginners: code, community and culture
Most open source projects are rightly proud of their communities, long histories (both measured in time and version control), passionate debates and occasional trolling. Newcomers to these communities often face an uphill battle, though. Not just in understanding decision making processes and community standards, but in coming to terms with often complex, contradictory, and poorly documented code bases. This talk will introduce you to the concepts and tools you need to be an expert code, culture, and community archaeologist and quickly become productive and knowledgeable in an unknown or legacy code base.

The commit will cause Jenkins to run a build job and, upon successful completion of that job, push a Docker image up to Docker Registry. Once the new docker image is made available, Jenkins will trigger calm.io to deploy the new images on staging and production systems.

For Eclipse Mars the Eclipse Linux Tools and JBoss Tools team have been working on providing tooling for Docker.
The Docker tooling is multi-platform and runs on Linux, OSX and Windows. It allows you to build and run images and manage containers while connected to multiple Docker daemons.
This talk will demonstrate how to use Docker with the tools and how to use it together with other technologies like native CDT builds and server tools for Java middleware.

How To Make A Framework Plugin That Does Not Suck
Eclipse plugins that tries to support a specific framework such as Hibernate, JPA, servlets, Struts, Spring, Drools, log4j, etc. all have many of the same challenges but somehow they have a tendency to solve it differently and we end up with a fractured IDE from a usability and architectural perspective.
It seems like everyone understands what functionallity that is specific for their framework, but forget to consider issues like multiple version support, classpath libraries, debugging/launching and coexistence with other 3rd party framework plugins.
After working five years with this in context of JBoss Tools and Eclipse itself I came to realize a lot of this fracture is caused by either not using already existing functionallity available in Eclipse API's or simply not realizing how little effort it actually takes to handle these common issues.
This talk will outline the identified issues and present patterns and in some cases implementation for how framework plugins should be done so they work well within the majority of the Eclipse Java ecosystem.

Newcomers to these communities often face an uphill battle, though. Not just in understanding decision making processes and community standards, but in coming to terms with often complex, contradictory, and poorly documented code bases. This talk will introduce you to the concepts and tools you need to be an expert code, culture, and community archaeologist and quickly become productive and knowledgeable in an unknown or legacy code base.

We're slowly starting to see Configuration Management become a default rather than an exception. Increasingly large numbers of organizations see CM as a requirement and not an extra. Sadly we don't see this maturity reflected in the monitoring world. Change has been slow, we're often not monitoring the right things or the right places and environments remain heavily manual.
So why hasn't monitoring advanced at the same pace as CM? What's different about it? More importantly, what can we do about it?
Once upon a time: Why operations mythology matters
Operations people frequently communicate and learn through stories and mythology. Much like fairy tales: some of this mythology is healthy, some cautionary and some moralistic. Your Operations mythology is a strong element in how your organisational culture is shaped and more importantly can influence how your Operations team makes decisions.
I (with some help from Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm) am going to examine why these stories and mythology matter. We’ll look at how these shape your culture and set the mood for your Operations team. You’ll see why and how mythology, whether you’re in a giant enterprise or a tiny startup, often subconsciously influences the decisions and choices you make and the risks you’re prepared to take.
Finally, I’ll present some ways you can tell good stories, build healthy mythology, make use of that mythology for profit, and how you can eradicate the mythology and stories that give your Operation’s team nightmares.

A Gentle Introduction To Docker And All Things Containers
Docker is a runtime for Linux Containers. It enables "separation of concern" between devs and ops, and solves the "matrix from hell" of software deployment. This presentation explains it all! It also explains the role of the storage backend and compares the various backends available. It gives multiple recipes to build Docker images, including integration with configuration management software like Chef, Puppet, Salt, Ansible. First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User Endpoints
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on scientific collaboration. The pandemic and its broad response from the scientific community has forged new relationships among public health practitioners, mathematical modelers, and scientific computing specialists, while revealing critical gaps in exploiting advanced computing systems to support urgent decision making. Informed by our team’s work in applying high-performance computing in support of public health decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic, we present how Globus technologies are enabling the development of an open science platform for robust epidemic analysis, with the goal of collaborative, secure, distributed, on-demand, and fast time-to-solution analyses to support public health.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data Analysis
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
