Fifth Business Essays
Crafting an essay on the topic of "Fifth Business" can be a challenging yet intellectually
rewarding endeavor. The novel "Fifth Business" by Robertson Davies is a complex and multi-
layered work that delves into various themes such as identity, guilt, fate, and the
interconnectedness of human lives. Writing an essay on this topic requires a deep understanding
of the novel, its characters, and the intricate relationships between them.
One of the challenges lies in analyzing the character development throughout the novel.
Characters like Dunstan Ramsay, Paul Dempster, and Boy Staunton undergo significant
transformations, and a comprehensive essay should explore the factors influencing these
changes. Additionally, the essay may need to address the symbolism and allegorical elements
present in the narrative, adding another layer of complexity.
Furthermore, discussing the novel's themes and how they relate to broader social, cultural, or
philosophical concepts requires thoughtful analysis and critical thinking. The essay should delve
into the author's intentions, the historical context in which the novel is set, and the implications
of the characters' actions on the overall message of the work.
Structuring the essay effectively is another aspect that contributes to its difficulty. Balancing the
introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion while maintaining a coherent and logical flow is
crucial. Each paragraph should contribute to the overall argument and support the thesis
statement.
Despite the challenges, writing an essay on "Fifth Business" offers an opportunity for personal
interpretation and insight. It encourages the writer to engage deeply with the text, extract
meaning, and communicate those findings effectively. While the process may be demanding, the
end result is a piece of literary analysis that not only showcases the writer's understanding of the
novel but also provides a unique perspective on the themes and characters within.

The Bolsheviks and the Tragedy of the October Revolution...
The Bolsheviks and the Tragedy of the October Revolution
The majority of the people are with us. The majority of the working and oppressed
people all over the world are with us. Ours is the cause of justice. Our victory is
assured. 1
October was a classic coup d Г©tat, the capture of governmental power by a small
minority, carried out without mass engagement. 2
The October Revolution was perhaps the most momentous event of the twentieth
century. It led to the creation of the Soviet Union, the first avowedly Communist
nation in history, which was to become a global superpower, an inspiration to many,
an object of the hatred of many more. Possibly more important was the role the
memory of the October Revolution played in the ... Show more content on

The October Revolution was interpreted quite differently by those hostile to the
Communist leaders of the Soviet Union. In their top down histories of the Russian
Revolution the common people appeared as the passive objects of the evil
machinations of the Bolsheviks. 4 The Bolsheviks cynically adopted populist and
anarchist slogans in order to recruit the masses as foot soldiers in their own quest
for power. If any apparent support for the October Revolution was seen among the
masses, it was the product of ignorance, skilled propaganda and a supple
improvisation by the Bolsheviks themselves, who transformed their elite operation
into a temporary mass organization 5 to seduce the Russian masses. The socialist
reality of October was imaginary, and the Revolution itself was an amateur police
operation masked with expert propaganda to give an appearance of proletarian
legitimacy 6
Both of these interpretations are heavily politicized. The former s purpose was to
establish the legitimacy of the Soviet Union as the genuine embodiment of the will of
the Russian Proletariat, the authentic People s State. The latter was meant to strip the
USSR of that legitimacy and expose the oppressive and unpopular dictatorship that
ruled the country with an iron fist. As is not uncommon in such situations, both of
these interpretations
Essay on The Temple of Athena Nike
The Temple of Athena Nike exemplifies the early Greek belief that the gods,
specifically Athena, held divine providence over government and victory in war. It
was built as part of the same project as the Parthenon, one of the greatest
achievements of Mycenaean Greece. Lasting from 1300 1000 B.C.E, Mycenaean
Greece bordered Epirus, Macedonia, Phrace, Phryapa, Mysia, Caria, and Lydia.
Encompassing this time span, Ancient Greecelasted from 8000 to 50 B.C.E. The
achievements of Athensin this time include the Pythagorean Theorem and the
Socratic dialogues. The epic Trojan War was said to have occurred in Mycenaean
times as well. So were the Ionic Greeks who built this ancient temple. (Ancient

His statue adorns Kolokotroni Square. In front of Old Parliament, this equestrian
statue s location symbolizes his celebration atop a hill. Another similarity of these
two structures is their open air feel, which reflects the motives of Ancient Greek
democracy, as is shown in its open meetings where freedom of speech was upheld.
Such are the Temple of Athena Nike s connections with government and warfare.
(Calvin, Calvin.edu)(Watterson, 25) The Temple of Athena Nike was built where it
is for various strategic and religious reasons. Pericles rebuilt it as part of an effort to
increase morale and renew culture during wartime. It was built over a previous
temple to Athena, which was used for similar things. Utilized continuously by
Bronze Age Greeks, the temple also served as a military base. References to Nike,
the goddess of victory, also strengthened the luck associated with this structure and,
therefore, its appeal as a fort. It also was arranged to face an altar to the east.
Furthermore, the location affected the use of stone, as the natural shapes and quality
of local marble inspired the Doric and Ionic orders. Thus, the Ancient Greeks had
reasons for placing the Temple of Athena Nike where it still stands today. (Ancient

A. S. Byatt s The Pink Ribbon
A. S. Byatt s story The Pink Ribbon is a story about change in a marriage as a result
of a traumatic experience, as well as how the struggle between duty and love
manifests themselves. In this story, a man doing what he thinks is his duty becomes
overwhelmed with feelings of anger, fear, and resentment after his transition from
spouse to caretaker. Through seemingly imagined encounters with a beautiful young
woman, this man is reminded of his wife and what it is like to have meaningful
contact with another person that is not consumed by taking care of someone else,
which causes him to make a choice in the name of mercy, both for himself and his
wife. Byatt shows the changes in James and Madeleine s relationship through the use
of diction,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
James believed the doll Dipsy was equivalent to Mado, so the use of the word
suffocating suggests that he thought Mado was suffocating or trapped and the
only way to help her was to give her release through death, although it also could be
hinting at the method he was going to use. Byatt wrote that every time James went
outside he took huge gulping breaths, which suggests that James felt trapped
himself and might have thought that if Mado were no longer around he would be
able to breathe again. James visits from the fetch (234) ,Dido, also foreshadow
Mado s death. A fetch in folklore is an omen of death. Since Dido reminded him of
his wife and what their relationship used to be like, it makes sense that Mado s
death was forthcoming. The last instance of foreshadowing is in the final
paragraph of the story, ...the Teletubbies were sitting on the end of the casket
shaped cradles,... (236), which, again, goes back to the symbol of the Teletubbies
doll. The idea of the Teletubbies going to beds that were shaped like coffins
proposes a parallel to where Mado was going to spend her last moments, which is
emphasized by James telling Mado to Come to bed,...Just a rest, for a while, (236).
So, are duty and love really different things? Merriam Webster defines duty as
something that is done as part of a job; something that must be done because it is
morally right, and love as a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person. James

A Brief Story Of Walt Disney And Roy O. Disney
Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney began their greatest endeavor in 1923 when they
officially founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. With their headquarters
officially established in Burbank, California they established themselves as the leader
in the American animation industry. The most memorable character of the Disney
franchise would have to be attributed to their first sound film Steamboat Willie, with
its leading character Mickey Mouse(nearly named Mortimer Mouse). With much
success and critical acclaim, Disney released its first full length animated film in

The Tragic Life of Sylvia Plath Essays
Sylvia Plath Sylvia Plath, an open minded, free spirited author and poet of a variety
of many pieces. All of Plath s poems are inspired by her personal life and how she
viewed it.
According to Plath, It is a feeling that no matter what the ideas or conduct of others,
there is a unique rightness and beauty to life which can be shared in openness, in
wind and sunlight, with a fellow human being who believes in the same basic
principles (Sylvia Quotes).
Reveals and proves how free spirited and understanding she was. It conveys that
people in your life can be influential, but only to a certain extent; then, it is up to the
individual, to find the beauty and love in your life, and to find that in another human
being is beautiful. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the year 1940, Plath s father died due to the gangrene in his leg that was caused
by untreated and possibly an unrecognizable form of diabetes. Plath was greatly
affected by the loss of her father, which inspired her to move to Wellesley,
Massachusetts. Plath achieved a full scholarship to Smith College; however, prior to
attending Smith College, she had already published a story, And Summer Will not
Come Again, and a poem, Ode on a Bitten Plum, which was published in Seventeen
Magazine.
As time progressed, Plath fought many inner, deep battles within herself, which
involved marriage, sexuality, chastity, and her career, thus leading to her mental
breakdown. Her morale did not improve any further or at all when she was rejected
from a summer writing course at Harvard. On April 1, 1960, her daughter, Freida
was born. Now that she had a child, she found very little time to write. She felt like
there was no exit and that she was being held down with nowhere to go and nobody
to talk to. To make matters worse, her husband, Ted Hughes, kept publishing articles,
poems, and books. By Hughes continuation of publication, he was indirectly rubbing
it in Plath s face. With Plath s deteriorating health and severe depression, she had a
miscarriage while pregnant with her second child in February of 1961. The
following year, she tried for another, and her son Nicholas Farr was born. Meanwhile,

Analysis Of The Pigman
The Pigman written by Paul Zindel is based on two teenagers lives, it shows both
of their perspectives throughout the book. The genre of this book is young adult
fiction, which is targeted for teenagers. The Pigman was published in 1968, when
Paul was only 32 years old. The book went on to win a total of eight awards, being

throughout the book, but the most important ones are John Conlan, Lorraine
Jensen and Angelo Pignati. John and Lorraine find themselves to be bored often,
they wish to find excitement, in search of that they meet Angelo Pignati. John
Conlan comes from a family where there are many problems, his dad was an
alcoholic but stopped drinking because he was diagnosed with an illness. John
started drinking when he was younger, his dad would put on a show with John
drinking when he was younger. John aspires to be an actor but his father doesn t
seem to think its idealistic. Lorraine moved into Johns neighborhood at the start of
her freshman year with her mother. Her mother made Lorraine become insecure
with all of the comments she makes towards her like you re not pretty causing
Lorraine to be self conscious. Lorraine likes to read and one day wants to be a writer.

Comparing Bottlerack, Barnett Newman s Eve And Ana
Mendieta
The three works that will be compared are Marcel Duchamp s Bottlerack, Barnett
Newman s Eve and Ana Mendieta s Silueta. Placed together the pieces show us
three varying genres, each from different periods in the twentieth century. Between
the artists we also see obvious connections in how they have challenged the
spectator, and the art world alike, in viewing their art. All artists removed
something , be it a body in Silueta or the purpose of the Bottlerack and Eve s
figurative form or vanishing point. All were met with a critique of the processes in
which their work were produced and likewise they also received admiration for
their forward thinking, progressive art. There is a noticeable difference in the
creative processes that have taken place to produce these works. Duchamp, it could
be argued, has taken the least time in producing or creating his Bottlerack. After all,
Duchamp was the inventor ...of the readymade... (Gaiger, 2003. p.63). Also call an
unassisted readymade where the artist has not interfered with or altered the object
and we are asked to appreciate the object, as it stands before us.... Show more content

We see the challenges they have faced in pushing the art world beyond the accepted
and experimenting with something new. The artists have offered us a new
experience, one which asks us to reflect upon their works. One that seeks us to return
to our most basic thoughts, to being that Man s hand tracing a stick through the mud
to make a line... (Newman, 2002. p.574). To see art as a means of communication
through expressive forms that contradict, and challenge, our reactions to what we see
and hold as real in everyday life. To summarise, these artists have shown us the
innovative journey their art has taken through the twentieth century, giving us an
opportunity to establish new skills in interpreting

The Chaco And Its Effects On Indigenous Peoples
Much of the Chaco is still inhabited by indigenous people who often do not have
rights to the territory they are on. Development brought on by actions from
organizations like the IIRSA can be devastating to the indigenous people. Natural
resource companies can displace communities. They can also harm the indigenous
people by extracting resources which the indigenous rely on for their way of life. The
IIRSA is attempting to boost economic development by promoting resource
extraction and agricultureproduction, but in doing so they are harming many
communities that need the Chaco s resources to survive. According to a USAID Issue
Brief about Tenure and Indigenous Peoplesnew infrastructure to improve access to
markets, facilitate trade, and promote economic growth leads to an increase in
demand for land. This new infrastructure makes it easier for settlers, merchants, and
illegal loggers to clear forests and settle in indigenous territories. The USAID brief
also mentions how this infrastructure has both directly and indirectly caused negative
effects in the Gran Chaco region. They report how small scale illegal loggers
invading indigenous titled lands follow[ed] the new transoceanic highway built as
part of the IIRSA development plan, which threatens indigenous peoples in South
America through interlinked set of dams, canals, and multiple routes to the Pacific.

The people s lack of morals led to an even more severe issue, a severe decline in
population because of urbanization and industrialization that was under way
(L.C). To ensure the economy s increase, industrialization and a plentiful
population, he decided the only way was to implement an anti abortion policy. The
policy was introduced in 1966 with the description of ... prohibited abortion on
demand (Bachman). This decree also included the introduction of other pronatalist
acts that would increase births. The decree outlined several requirements that must
be followed: 1.Abortion would only be permitted when it was a danger to the
mothers life, was a result of rape or incest, or the child would be born with a
disease (Bachman). 2.An abortion could only be done on a woman over 45 or had

Analysis Of The Yoknapatawpha River In As I Lay Dying
Spring; hurricane. Much as these are both related to water, they differ greatly in their
impact on societies while one brings hope and life to weary travelers, the other brings
struggle accompanied by death. Throughout most of literary history, writers have
explored this idea of poly indicative identity, whether that be with the vast depthness
of water or some other symbol, and William Faulkners novelAs I Lay Dying is no
exception to this idea. From rivers to the fish that inhabit them, As I Lay Dying is
composed with a symphony of different symbols, however, one of the more
persistent ones is that of the river. By incorporating certain aspects of the
Yoknapatawpha River, Faulkner is able to allow the work to flow more smoothly,
more easily incorporate ideas about the themes of death and barriers, as well as
enhance the characterization of certain figures. A symbol is, at its base, a literary
object, an object that besides holding a symbolic meaning also holds a literalone.
Although the symbolic is generally focused upon in class, the literal must not be
forgotten, for it can often be just as important the primary focus for literal objects
is in terms of plot development and flow. In the novel As I Lay Dying, the
Yoknapatawpha River is used to provide a physical barrier for the Bundren family.
As the Bundrens, and some of their neighbors, are traveling to bury Addie, they are
delayed by rainfall that has made the river ... too high to get across (111). By
including this obstacle, Faulkner is able to create a situation in which more
characters are introduced (e.g. Samson, Gillespie, Armstid, etc.) and events are
encouraged if not for the river: Jewel would have never needed to lift the wagon
from the river, the Bundrens would have gotten to Jefferson prior to Darl burning
down Gillespie s barn, and most every event within the 288 page novel would be
irrelevant. It is through plot development that the Yoknapatawpha River functions
literally within As I Lay Dying, however, there are more abstract ways as well.
While it is true that symbols have a literal meaning and function within a work, the
purpose of a symbol is to make connections beyond the scope of the literal, such as
with themes.
Radiation Fog In California
Every winter the Central Valley experiences radiation fog that forms across the
area. The Central Valley in California has ideal conditions for radiation fog to form.
The valley is between a coastal mountain range on the West Coast and on the east
side is where the Sierra Nevada mountains sit (Herckes, et. Al). Due to this
topography of this area air masses become stagnant and ventilation of the valley is
hindered (Herckes, et. Al). The lack of ventilation in the valley leads to
temperature inversions, because of high pressure systems that form of the Great
Basin (Herckes, et. Al). This leads to radiation fog forming because of inversion
during nights in which a layer of moist air is below a layer of drier air (Ahrens and
Sampson 97). The

have always curious to know what happens if you take away the five essential
human senses. Our senses help us make sense of in the insane, fast paced, stressed
world we live in. Not having one of our senses can lead to the process of learning
how to live comfortably without that certain input of senses. While having none of
the senses can lead to creating your own world by hallucinating. Without having
any of the senses, can you get in contact with the supernatural? One experiment
suggests that it is possible depending on the person. Is it possible that depriving all
of the senses from a person could be relaxing to some? Yes, having a break from
the world can help relieve stress. What happens if you just take away one of the
main senses from a human? It can lead to fully understanding how lucky we are to
experience the world with each of our senses.
What would it be like to not be able to hear, see, touch, taste and smell? That is the
question that scientists have been trying to answer with Sensory Deprivation
experiments throughout the years. Sensory deprivation is the deliberate removal
of stimuli from one or more of the senses, (Hanchett 1). Sensory Deprivation can be
scary. Losing all of your senses and the idea of the material world not being at your
fingers for just a second is a frightening thought to most. We all depend on our senses
to keep us alive. We can look and see if a car is
How Does Goya Design Transcend Into Modern Caricature
And...
Baudelaire once said, Caricatures are often the most faithful mirror of life. The art of
caricature was established into print in eighteenth century England as a form of
commentary on the current events of the time. Caricature as a style itself is a
combination of two separate social inventions. CaricatureAdopting the Italian
invention of caricatura the graphic exaggeration of facial and bodily features for
comic effect and combining it with an updated repertoire of visual metaphor,
personification, and allegorical attributes. Though born in England, the story about to
be told in this paper is one of Spanish origin, a story about Francisco Goya. This
paper will discuss how Goya implemented painting, drawing, and printing technique
to stimulate social critique of and satirize the subjects of his works. Then how does
Goya s methodology transcend into modern caricature and social critique?
Before one can talk about his prints, one must understand who Francisco Goya is as
an artist. Goya was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker of late 18th and early
19th centuries and throughout his long career was an important commentator and
chronicler of his era. Goya produced a great number of works in a variety of media
in his lifetime. He did religious subjects in painted frescos and portraits, he then also
depicted life in Spain through aquatints, etchings, and lithographs . Gautier comments

Media And Its Impact On Society Essay
Media has been growing for a numerous amount of years, and it will only keep
rising. You could say that nearly everyone around you has some sort of
technological device or way in which they can access the media, these are what we
call print, audio visual and on line media. Print media includes things such as
newspapers, magazines and even books, Audio visual media includes your TV,
radio or even music and finally on line media is mostly photos or videos that are
spread over the internet. With the media we are able to see what is going on
around the world through a computer or TV screen without actually being there,
thus we can all share knowledge within our cultures. Each of these pieces of media
will have some sort of impact on an individual s life whether that be watching the
news or listening to a certain type of music but the ways that this can influence
someone can differ through their cultural identity. Sender, Message and Receiver
(S M R) is a model for communication that starts with a producer, the message that
they publish into society and the views that people get from that message. Sender
is the starting point of this model, whereby you look at who owns certain aspects of
the media and what their interests are. Global Media ownership are bigger
corporations such as Disney and Time Warner, these big companies own most of the
TV channels and films that we watch for example, Disney owns ABC and Marvel
Studios so you can see that they might want to bring one
Effects Of School Bullying
School bullying happens on all of the grade levels, elementary, middle, and high
school. The National Center for Education Statistics, a third of students ages 12 18
have been bullied in school. Bullying can cause long term effects like low self
esteem, difficulty in trusting others, lack of assertiveness, aggression, difficulty
controlling anger, and isolation.
There are several types of bullying that effect our school, our culture, and daily
living. Homophobic bullying, bullying of students with disabilities, racist bullying,
face to face bullying, and cyber bullying.
Homophobic bullying is sometimes distinguished because it has a particular target
population. It can be involving physical or mental violence by a group or individual.
The form of homophobic bullying can be through name calling, spreading rumors,
cyberbullying, physical or sexual and emotional abuse. Homophobic name calling is
always challenging in the same way that racist or sexist behavior is.
Bullying of students with disabilities is unacceptable to students, teachers, and
school administrators. When bullying is based on the child s disability, federal law
can also apply under Section 504, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
(IDEA), and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. When bullying is
directed at a child because of his or her established disability it creates a hostile
environment at school. This behavior may cross the line and become disability
harassment. . Which

Black Humor in America
Black Humor
One of the most underappreciated and unrecognized forms of comedy is black
humor. Black humor often deals with events that are not often associated with other
forms of comedy, such as war, murder, insanity and death. The main reason that this
form of comedy is so underappreciated is that it requires some thinking on the part
of the audience and many people are not willing to do that. The types of humor that
are popular today do not require much thinking and can be characterized as one
liners. However, black humor has been used as an effective means of satire usually
towards a tragic event. One of the biggest misconceptions about black humor is that it
involves race. Black humor is not a form of African Americanhumor ... Show more

Even though this is such a great model of black comedy, Joseph Heller said that he
was not aware that it would be funny when he wrote it (Catch 22, Computer). In the
story, Catch 22 is a military rule that employs circular logic. An example of this is the
rule that deals with avoiding combat missions:
One may only be excused from flying bombing missions on the grounds of insanity;
one must assert one s insanity to be excused on this basis; one who requests to be
excused is presumably in fear for his life. This is taken to be proof of his sanity, and
he is therefore obliged to continue flying missions; one who is truly insane
presumably would not make the request. He therefore would continue flying
missions, even though as an insane person he could of course be excused from them
simply by asking. (Catch 22, Computer)
The main themes in Heller s novel are paradox and contradiction. He used his novel
as a way to show the absurdity of war and to protest World War II. Another author,
Kurt Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse Five in 1969 as an analysis of the human
condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel as a plot device and the
bombing of Dresden in World War II, which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting point
(Slaughter, wikipedia). The humor in this book comes from Vonnegut s downplay of
human mortality. He uses the phrase so it goes whenever dying is mentioned. Much of
Whaling Exemption Essay
I d like discuss about an exemption for whaling in this week. One of the reason I
chose the topic is that I m originally from Japan, and the exemption is the one of the
biggest issue Japanese should dispute. My answers to the questions are below.
1. I totally disagree with the Norwegian and Japanese exemption for whaling even if
it s their tradition. The Japanese government claims hunting whale is based on their
traditional culture and Japanese fishers have hunted whales for few hundred years so
that none of foreign countries has right to control if Japanese people should eat
whales or not. Whales were important protein for Japanese people between 1940s
and 1960s, and they killed more than 24 grand whales in 1964 (BBC, 2016). In

It is very difficult to find the way all of the international resolutions fairly works
for all countries. Each country has their individual culture, and sometimes the
culture is hardly understood for other countries. In globalization, the world trade is
one of the most important sector in all countries, and WTO has a crucial role. It
never should be controlled by few dominant countries, such as the US. Anytime
WTO enacts international rules, all decision should be based on certain research
and ethical purposes. Each of nations has different idea. For example, the reason
94% of Australian are against whaling is that they think that whales are scared
animals, whereas Japanese or Norwegian people think whales are the same meat as
beef and pork. There is no answer to decide which opinion is justice. However, if
nations activities give critical damages to environment, nations have to decide to
stop their activities to preserve nature. And all of prohibition should be based on
scientific facts but should not be decided by individual perspective. I have no
particular idea who serve on WTO, but I think it shouldn t be consisted of only few
dominant countries.
4. I define cultural activities is phenomenon by experiences of local life, tradition, or
religion. Each nations has their unique cultural activities. Globalization has made
nations unified. However, we can t forget how important preserving our culture
Life Should Be Better And Richer And Fuller
Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each
according to ability or achievement , that was what writer, historian, James Truslow
Adams defined the American Dream as in 1931. And it means that everyone has the
same opportunity to become success in life and that if they strive for it, and if they
put everything they got into something, they would have a better life. However, looks
at the society today, can t anyone dare to say that the motto is still relevant today?
Unfortunately, no is the only answer. As the society continue to evolve over time, the
basic core values of a human being, such as trustworthy, kindness, forgiveness, ... are

In short, education is the first criteria to achieve the dream. Then, if the person has
good characteristics, such as honesty, bravery, and generosity, the chances for
them to shine will appear and it will be the stepping stone to launch them to
succeed. In Dick s case, after he showed his valor by rescuing a drowning kid without
any hesitation and ignoring his own life, Dick was rewarded with some new clothes,
a new job, and an unbelievable salary offer. And what is his response to those? Ten
dollars a week was to him a fortune, and three times as much as he had expected to
obtain at first. Indeed, he would have been glad to get a place at three dollars a week.
He could save up at least half of it, then he was to be advanced if he deserved it. It
was indeed a bright prospect for a boy who, only a year before, could neither read nor
write, and depended for a night s lodging upon the chance hospitality of an alley way
or old wagon (Money Changes Everything, 126).
Meaning that if a person willing to improve themselves, and if they stay true to who
they are, they will have the chance to become successful no matter where they start

any amount of money or material that anyone can attain. But looks at the society

Tenochtitlan Empires
Throughout human history, people have come together to form small, independent
city states or large, expanding empires. From the Egyptian Empire in the 16th century
BC to the British Empire in the 19th century AD, humankind has seen large and small
empires rise and fall. Some empires have been more conventional to the Western
understanding, such as the Roman Empire where there was a central capital that had
direct control over other territories in which it conquered. Other empires consisted of
a more complex system, like the AztecEmpire which consisted of a capital,

Monologue Of Cinderella Alternate Ending
One day, our new step sister, Cinderella, arrived. I was a little cautious and unsure
of her at first. I let her mind her own business, except occasionally, I did spy on her,
just the see what she was up to. I started taking a liking to her when I noticed how
kind and gentle she was with the animals that always hang around the kitchen

What Are The Stereotypes In My Cousin Vinny
My Cousin Vinny (1992) is a perfect way to show Italians in Hollywood movies. It
gives the gangster stereotype, the family sticks together, names that people associate
with Italians, and the defensive attitude. The main characters that are Italian are Billy
Gambini, Stan Rothenstein, Vincent LaGuardia Vinny Gambini, and Mona Lisa Vito.
These characters all carry some sort of stereotype that corresponds with being Italian.
Although some have a more dominant presence of the stereotype, it can still be found
during the movie. The movie starts off with two friends driving around in the south.

Efficacy And Efficacy Of Self Efficacy
Literature Review This chapter provides a review of the literature from the past
fourteen years devoted to the study of efficacy, teacher efficacy, and collective
teacher efficacy. Self efficacy, social cognitive theory, and sources of self efficacy
are described. A brief history of efficacy studies and current research on teacher
efficacy and collective efficacy are included as well as different leadership styles.
Additionally, information regarding the inclusion of demographic characteristics
in efficacy research and the interrelationship between teacher efficacy and
leadership are reviewed. Finally, the need for effective leadership and teacher
efficacy. Self Efficacy These concepts of teacher efficacy and collective efficacy
have their origins in self efficacy, a component of social cognitive theory. Beliefs of
self efficacy form the basis for human behavior choices.Restated by (2003) Roger

refers to beliefs in one s capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action

actions, responses, and choices on their perceived self efficacy. In addition to
influencing the choices people make and the actions they take, self efficacy beliefs

Benefits Of Andrew Jackson
Corrupt politicians have always been an issue. Many debate that Andrew Jackson
was one. He went beyond the bounds of his power, forced thousands of natives off
their land down the trail of tears , and claimed to fight for common individuals , a
group which apparently only includes free white men. Today, many of our previous
historical figures have become controversial from a moral and political standpoint,
especially Andrew Jackson. This is due to his ownership of slaves, and his ability to
follow rules, or lack thereof. Andrew Jackson s Presidency should not be admired
by our current generation because it harmed many people, and he broke many
constitutional laws. Andrew Jackson s political career was harmful and non
beneficial. Andrew Jackson s Presidency should not be admired by our current
generation because it harmed many people. When Andrew Jackson became
President, he gained executive control over all of the land. This also meant that he
had easier control over the Native Americans, and could force more of them off the
land. In fact, Andrew Jackson became a main proprietor of the tragic Trail of Tears

thousand mile forced trip to new lands which cost one quarter of the 16,000 natives

Fee for Service Care Versus Managed Care Essay
Some researchers feel that our society has unrealistically demanded the health care
system to maximize quality while lowering the costs of health care services. That if
we demand this change, there is no way we are realistically considering the cost of
health care. I understand that everyone wants to receive the best therapy without
paying a large amount of money. When you think about this idea, this plan would
take time to execute. One of the cons of living in a country like the United States is
that we citizens expect to have things right when we want them. I totally agree that
we deserve the best services at the lowest prices. But how should we go about
executing this plan? We will have to balance the plan between two approaches, the...

insurance, prepayment, and taxes, which are all devices our society had created
for increasing the costs of healthcare. Many of the people who receive the care are
not paying the costs. So, it is very easy for them to proclaim that the care they
receive should not have a limit by any determination of costs. Sixty years ago,
people did not have this problem, because everyone was obligated for his or her
own bills (Eddy, 1997). Space prevents a full breakdown of the differences between
fee for service and managed care. There are important characteristics of each that
affect how trade offs between quality and cost are made. For fee for service: There
is no defined population for which the insurance company is responsible.
Connections with the system are initiated by the patients. The main focus is on
treating sick patients. Neither physicians nor insurance companies are responsible
for providing care beyond what is specified when patients seek care (Eddy, 1997).
The responsibility of the insurance company is to pay the bills. Importantly, the
insurance company is not responsible for the overall health of its subscribers or for
the quality of care delivered by individual physicians. Physicians are left to decide
what care their patients should receive.

Is Hamlet A Hero Or A Villain
The villain and the hero in any plot are basically the same person. The only
difference is that the hero settles for less and is content with what he has and the
villain always desires more and is discontent with his life. Many people are discontent
whether it be from not having enough money, not strong enough relationships, or
imperfect lifestyles. Hamletis discontent with his life and always asking and
scheming for more. The constant stream of wanting more eventually dries up and
Hamlet is left with nothing but bitter death and destruction. William Shakespeare
Hamlet to represent the discontentment and how never settling for anything and
always searching for more instead of being content leads to self destruction.
Each character gets caught up in their mental despair that tears them apart from the
inside out. Being a prince and having a kingdom to reign over, Hamlet desires to be
the hero and the great leader of his kingdom. After his father s death, His charmed
life suddenly feels dull and grey and Hamlet s sense of control is thrown off. His
strong craving for redemption causes him to see blindly when he is approached by
his phantom father. Instead of weighing the consequences and benefits of the ghost
s word Hamlet automatically believes that the only way to save the day and get the
glory is to kill his uncle. Hamlet s one track mind causes him eternal grief and
despair from the very start of the play all because he blindly follows the first

If the question mark does not succeed in becoming the market leader, then after
perhaps years of cash consumption it will degenerate into a dog when the market
growth declines. Question marks must be analyzed carefully in order to determine
whether they are worth the investment required to grow market share.
Stars are units with a high market share in a fast growing industry (High Market
Share / High Market Growth). The hope is that stars become the next cash cows.
Sustaining the business unit s market leadership may require extra cash, but this is
worthwhile if that s what it takes for the unit to remain a leader. When growth
slows, if they have been able to maintain their category leadership stars become cash
cows, else they become dogs due to low relative market share.
As a particular industry matures and its growth slows, all business units become
either cash cows or dogs. The natural cycle for most business units is that they start as
question marks, then turn into stars. Eventually the market stops growing thus the
business unit becomes a cash cow. At the end of the cycle the cash cow turns into a
dog.
The overall goal of this ranking was to help corporate analysts decide which of their
business units to fund, and how much; and which units to sell. Managers were
supposed to gain perspective from this analysis that allowed them to plan with
confidence to use money generated by the cash cows to fund the stars and, possibly,
the question marks. As the
Reforming the Canadian Electoral System Essay
Although Canadian electoral system has always undergone periodic reforms, new
challenges always accompany electoral changes and therefore the system should be
consistently reformed to meet new circumstances. The current electoral system in
Canada is a product of a series of electoral changes that have always taken place
since the foundation of the Canadian confederation in the mid 1880s. During the
early years, the rights of individuals to vote were significantly limited as only white
males had the right to vote but only after meeting certain requirements. A secret
ballot was unheard, and it was only after a number of changes were implemented that
all social groups in Canada were given the right to vote. Even after these changes,

Canadian electoral system is largely based on the single member plurality (SMP)
system which was inherited from its former British colonial masters. The system
dates back to several years before the formation of the Canadian confederation.
Some of the common features of the Canadian electoral system include election
candidates to represent designated geographical areas popularly known as ridings
, counting and tallying of the votes casted on the basis of the districts as opposed
to the parties of the candidates (Dyck, 622). Finally, a candidate only needs a
simple majority over the other candidates in order to be considered a winner, even
if the winner has a small percentage of votes. This system has however been heavily
criticized for its winner takes all way of judging victory. Critics argue that if the
winner takes over the whole system, it may result into unfair representation of the
various social groups, but it may also bring into power unstable minority participation
in government. For example, a candidate can win even with barely 25% of all the
votes casted, while the small parties may end up with no seats in the parliament. On
the other hand, the Canadian electoral system has also been accused of being
undemocratic and unrepresentative in many aspects. Although the Canadian single

Boundary Conflicts In Texas
1. How were boundary disputes over Oregon and Texas resolved? Why were the
resolutions in the two cases so different? Upon Texas claiming independence from
Mexico, there were disputes about what the new borders should be. The Texans
believed that the border should be separated by the Rio Grande River. On the other
hand, Mexicobelieved that the border should be based using the Nueces River. The
border dispute did however end up in favor of Texasand the United States, as the
dividing point turned out to be to the Rio Grande. Similarly, another territory that was
in heavy dispute was Oregon. Both Britain and the United States claimed that the
territory belonged to them. There were not able to come to an agreement about who

What was the issue at stake in Bleeding Kansas, and how did events in Kansas
reflect the growing sectional division between the North and the South? The
Kansas Nebraska act of 1854 allowed for Kansas to decide whether it should be a
slave state or not. This would be determined by popular sovereignty, meaning that
the majority on one particular side would be the ultimate decision. This caused an
influx of people into Kansas to try and sway the decision of the state. There were
both proslavery and antislavery citizens going to Kansas. As a result of this, there
were massive conflicts that spread throughout Kansas. Many of these conflicts
resulted in deaths on both sides of the argument. This showed the growing division
among the North and South, and that they were willing to fight for what they
believed in. These conflicts even spread to members of Congress, and outbreaks
broke out within arguments. In my opinion, events such as Bleeding Kansas had
negative effects on both sides of the slavery argument. It was however these same
events that helped to build up to the Civil War that changed America forever.
Ultimately the side of antislavery won, but they did take massive casualties as a
result of the

was not happy with this new arrangement because of the control that shareholders
would hold on direction and this was not in keeping with his nonconformist style and
also that he felt that his organization was misunderstood and undervalued by so

Who Is Miyazaki An Auteur Movie
Miyazaki the Fashion Icon of Film
Many people may have a specific style in which they like to dress. A woman might
have a signature lipstick she enjoys wearing, a man might have a distinct cologne
that stands out from the rest. Movies are not too far apart in comparison. Sometimes
people find films more enjoyable than others, and often do not realize they come
from the same director. The Auteur theory is a that defines the director as the sole
author of the entire film, adding his or her own personal style. When it comes to the
world of animation, director Hayao Miyazaki is a pioneer in auteur. His specific
directorial style is seen in many of his films in which he manages to make films
enjoyable to adults of all ages. Kiki s Delivery Service was one of director Miyazaki s
first major films. During the climax of the film Kiki s Delivery Service, director
Hayao Miyazaki illustrates his signature auteur style that makes his movies
distinguished and enjoyable.
There is a significant pattern that Hayao Miyazaki has in most of his animated films
that identify his style different from western directors. First, Miyazaki is a director
that prefers hand drawn animation to computerized animation. Other important
details he demonstrates in his films are strong female leads, original stories, and
ordinary characters. In addition, Miyazaki likes to employ the environment as an
important factor in his films. Kiki s Delivery Service exhibits these specific traits
that reveal Miyazaki
Questions For The Group Discussion
Two Questions for the group discussion:
Inside a church, a pastor has flipped a verse of the bible to accommodate polygamy.
Consulted by a business millionaire, the pastor ransacked the bible and finally arrived
at a verse to support the holy matrimony. Quoting Isaiah 4:1 the pastor joined the
notable influential member with three women . Does the text Isaiah 4:1 justify the
polygamous wedding?
During the discussion, which follows the presentation, the group was amazed at the
shocking photo of a man franked with three women in their weeding attires. The
scenario in a sociological dimension prompted the geographical background where
the wedding could have happened. It is assumed that most Christian communities
view polygamy as an abominable act, which presumably does not conform with most
biblical canons. For some geographical areas, it is illegal and punishable by law,
particularly in western society; yet it is acceptable in some countries and shockingly
among faith communities.
The expression that the Pastor flipped a verse of the Bible to accommodate polygamy
, could be inferred that the pastor was either desperate for the man s money or that
he was afraid of losing his membership in his church; and so, he was ready to do
anything to keep his buoyant church member. However, for charity sake, we do not
know the bigger picture of what really happened or what might have moved the
pastor to succumb to the risky demand. Sociologically his society allows it otherwise

Similarities Between Gupta Empire And Han Dynasty
When looking at Gupta Empire and the Han Dynasty, it is apparent that they share
many similarities including social, political, environmental, cultural and economic.
The social similarity that they both share is the dominance of the men in the house
and out in the fields and in the war. In the Gupta Empire most of the Indian families
were patriarchal and they also had men out in the fields for agriculture, the Han
Dynasty also believed in the men dominance in the war. In the Gupta Empire the
men of the house went to work and they also paid taxes. The Han Dynasty had only
employed the men and the military officers will also have to be men. These facts

The environmental similarities that they share were that they had interest in math,
astronomy and science and because of that they had learned the ways to deal with
money and education. The Gupta Empire had learned the ways to keep up on the
agriculture and putting taxes on food and water. The Han dynasty had learned to
make paper and this had given them the chance of getting education. These facts
show the environmental similarities because their interest in math and science had
given them the opportunity to expand the economy and get educated. The cultural
similarities that they shared was that they used different beliefs to keep people
interested in them and so that they would have a place in the society. The Gupta
Empire had created the caste system and the Han dynasty had adopted the
Confucianism philosophy. This way they tried to balance their empire and tried to
keep their conflicts away. The Gupta Empire had the caste system so that people
would try not to rebel and if they did they would not get to the higher class of the
caste, which will eventually get them
The American Revolution And The Revolution
The American Revolution, think you know everything about? You don t, as much as

the American Revolution. It was ordinary citizens that saved the revolution and don t

the help of spies, invisible ink, misinformation, codes, ordinary citizens, including
women, and lots of courage the members of the Culper Spy Ring saved the revolution

George Washington asked, James Jay, the brother of John Jay, was learning
chemistry in England, who had created a chemical solution out of tannic acid to be
used as an invisible ink, it was unknown to most. An advantage because it would ve
been unknown to the British officers if the contrecepted some correspondence. It
was difficult to make and George Washington himself instructed his agents in the
use of what was referred to as the sympathetic stain, noting that the ink will not
only render. . .communications less exposed to detection, but relieve the fears of
such persons as may be entrusted in its conveyance. Washington recommended the
spies to use the ink, on the blank leaves of a pamphlet. . . a common pocket book,
or on the blank leaves at each end of registers, almanacks, or any publication or
book of small value. Another, more common way to use invisible ink in letter, was to
write between the lines and the receiver would use heat in order to read the letter, but
with the new ink you would need another chemical solution to see the message.
While Washington is known for his honesty, he was okay with spreading
misinformation, when it came to fighting the revolution. He told the members of the
Culper Ring to exaggerate the fire power and size of American forces, in their
conversations with the loyalists of New York. Washington would get his hands dirty

Essay on Reflections on The Tao Te Ching
Reflections on The Tao Te Ching When the early Christians had to keep their faith
against the persecutions of the Roman Empire, they had obviously a visible enemy.
Once their religion was legalized and established, however, they had new questions to
ask concerning who they were, what could hurt their souls and their way of life.
Some of them, at least, concluded that the materialism of the dominant Roman way
of life was a non agressive, but equally corrosive force that would destroy them not
physically, but spiritually. These Fourth Century Christians, men and women, then
left their societies and withdrew into the desert to be able to find true paradise, not in

This assertion has always involved universally several profoundly felt
assumptions. 1. That humans, unlike all other creatures, are called upon to
develop, to become better than they are. 2. That to be most fully human requires
individual choice and development by cooperative action with identifiable but
demanding conditions. 3. That these conditions are truly universal, applicable and
available to all people and in that sense absolute both in practice and in idea. In The
Bhagavad Gita, for example, the poet says that whenever he reads the words of
Krishna to Arjuna he enters into the Gita s predicament and experiences a change
of soul. Similarly the Christian Gospels invite the hearers of the Word to
participate in a divine life. 4. That there is something or some others or some One
who is outside and beyond us and divinely interested in us as we succeed or fail at
living up to our expectations. 5. That in stories, poems, myths, or codes, the
elements of what it means to be human, as well as the passages from one level of
awareness and life to another higher level, can be captured and shared, thus giving
access to the wisdom of the culture. This wisdom may take two forms collections of
specific rules and/or stories and poems that present the possibility of
T-Scan Study
How Can Organizations Keep Up Their Scan? A.Ensure your dashboard of info is
accessible and correlated. It is pointless having all the direction info without the
altitude info. If this means your vital T Scan items must be accessible to all
employees in your organization, then do that. If it means timed reminders of sign

have this system set up. B.Allow for training and understanding of all team members

Basically, this means that there was no catastrophic cause for the crash, such as a
wing falling off, but rather the crew flew into the terrain unaware of where they
were located. In fact, had we been so unfortunate as to crash into the side of the
mountain that day in question, it would have been, in fact, a CFIT. One particular
case of CFIT was caused by the crew not trusting their instruments. It took place in
the United States, where an experienced crew of two pilots conducted a night flight
from the West Coast. They took off into a very dark night, as there was very little
ambient light from the moon or external lights. And a physiological effect of flying
made the situation more risky. Now, from a physiological perspective, each of us
as human beings has what scientists call proprioceptors, which are located all over
our body and assist us in feeling, touching, and maintaining balance. We also have
fluid in sections of the inner ear that assist us in balance. The function of these two
areas the inner ear and the proprioceptors are normally affected when drinking
alcohol and can be blamed for the spinning sensation one gets when drunk. From a
flight perspective, there is a commonly known effect called inversion illusion,
whereby during night flying the proprioceptors in your lower back and backside feed
the incorrect information to the inner ear. This misalignment causes pilots to feel as
if they are pulling
Is Paris Burning Film Analysis
As I read the reading assignment and watched the film, I realized I could relate
these two sources. First of all, the House(Ballroom) represents Black masculinity
within femininity and also culture of Black drag queens who are frequently socially
shunned performers compete in elaborate balls to support/comfort each other. So, I
believe the documentary, Paris Burning by Jennie Livingston is very similar but
different at the same time of the book Is Paris Burning by Bell Hooks. The author s
argument can be related to the filmin ways of both the book and the documentary
spotlights on Black gay(drag queens) living in NYC. Hooks also articulates the

She also criticizes about the film as saying it is only showing the white privilege(I
believe the director was White woman). They both touch the issues of racism,
poverty, and class. The author also points out that drag queens have always been
looked down upon. You can also watch interview with the renowned drag queens,
such as housemother Pepper Labeija and Willi Ninja in the film. While I was reading
the book and watching the film, I was wondering about the different aspects if the
documentary focused on White gay(drag queens) since Black Trans are the most
discriminated in the world.
The author also relates Black gay drag queens to Black comedians in some ways.
Most successful Black comedians at least dress up in drag in white society and the
author expresses some concerns that this can be disempowering to Black women.
One of the author s criticisms of the documentary was that what viewers constantly
hear and see is not drag queens are not dressing up like a woman for entertaining or
desire to become a real Black woman, but their obsession/desire to achieve notions of
the admired vision of

Fifth Business Essays.pdf

  • 1. Fifth Business Essays Crafting an essay on the topic of "Fifth Business" can be a challenging yet intellectually rewarding endeavor. The novel "Fifth Business" by Robertson Davies is a complex and multi- layered work that delves into various themes such as identity, guilt, fate, and the interconnectedness of human lives. Writing an essay on this topic requires a deep understanding of the novel, its characters, and the intricate relationships between them. One of the challenges lies in analyzing the character development throughout the novel. Characters like Dunstan Ramsay, Paul Dempster, and Boy Staunton undergo significant transformations, and a comprehensive essay should explore the factors influencing these changes. Additionally, the essay may need to address the symbolism and allegorical elements present in the narrative, adding another layer of complexity. Furthermore, discussing the novel's themes and how they relate to broader social, cultural, or philosophical concepts requires thoughtful analysis and critical thinking. The essay should delve into the author's intentions, the historical context in which the novel is set, and the implications of the characters' actions on the overall message of the work. Structuring the essay effectively is another aspect that contributes to its difficulty. Balancing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion while maintaining a coherent and logical flow is crucial. Each paragraph should contribute to the overall argument and support the thesis statement. Despite the challenges, writing an essay on "Fifth Business" offers an opportunity for personal interpretation and insight. It encourages the writer to engage deeply with the text, extract meaning, and communicate those findings effectively. While the process may be demanding, the end result is a piece of literary analysis that not only showcases the writer's understanding of the novel but also provides a unique perspective on the themes and characters within. For those seeking assistance with essays on "Fifth Business" or any similar topics, various resources are available. Professional writing services likeHelpWriting.net offer expert assistance in crafting custom essays, providing a valuable option for those who may need additional support in tackling the complexities of literary analysis. • 3. The Bolsheviks and the Tragedy of the October Revolution... The Bolsheviks and the Tragedy of the October Revolution The majority of the people are with us. The majority of the working and oppressed people all over the world are with us. Ours is the cause of justice. Our victory is assured. 1 October was a classic coup d Г©tat, the capture of governmental power by a small minority, carried out without mass engagement. 2 The October Revolution was perhaps the most momentous event of the twentieth century. It led to the creation of the Soviet Union, the first avowedly Communist nation in history, which was to become a global superpower, an inspiration to many, an object of the hatred of many more. Possibly more important was the role the memory of the October Revolution played in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The October Revolution was interpreted quite differently by those hostile to the Communist leaders of the Soviet Union. In their top down histories of the Russian Revolution the common people appeared as the passive objects of the evil machinations of the Bolsheviks. 4 The Bolsheviks cynically adopted populist and anarchist slogans in order to recruit the masses as foot soldiers in their own quest for power. If any apparent support for the October Revolution was seen among the masses, it was the product of ignorance, skilled propaganda and a supple improvisation by the Bolsheviks themselves, who transformed their elite operation into a temporary mass organization 5 to seduce the Russian masses. The socialist reality of October was imaginary, and the Revolution itself was an amateur police operation masked with expert propaganda to give an appearance of proletarian legitimacy 6 Both of these interpretations are heavily politicized. The former s purpose was to establish the legitimacy of the Soviet Union as the genuine embodiment of the will of the Russian Proletariat, the authentic People s State. The latter was meant to strip the USSR of that legitimacy and expose the oppressive and unpopular dictatorship that ruled the country with an iron fist. As is not uncommon in such situations, both of these interpretations
  • 4. Essay on The Temple of Athena Nike The Temple of Athena Nike exemplifies the early Greek belief that the gods, specifically Athena, held divine providence over government and victory in war. It was built as part of the same project as the Parthenon, one of the greatest achievements of Mycenaean Greece. Lasting from 1300 1000 B.C.E, Mycenaean Greece bordered Epirus, Macedonia, Phrace, Phryapa, Mysia, Caria, and Lydia. Encompassing this time span, Ancient Greecelasted from 8000 to 50 B.C.E. The achievements of Athensin this time include the Pythagorean Theorem and the Socratic dialogues. The epic Trojan War was said to have occurred in Mycenaean times as well. So were the Ionic Greeks who built this ancient temple. (Ancient Greece.org)(about ancient history.com) In the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His statue adorns Kolokotroni Square. In front of Old Parliament, this equestrian statue s location symbolizes his celebration atop a hill. Another similarity of these two structures is their open air feel, which reflects the motives of Ancient Greek democracy, as is shown in its open meetings where freedom of speech was upheld. Such are the Temple of Athena Nike s connections with government and warfare. (Calvin, Calvin.edu)(Watterson, 25) The Temple of Athena Nike was built where it is for various strategic and religious reasons. Pericles rebuilt it as part of an effort to increase morale and renew culture during wartime. It was built over a previous temple to Athena, which was used for similar things. Utilized continuously by Bronze Age Greeks, the temple also served as a military base. References to Nike, the goddess of victory, also strengthened the luck associated with this structure and, therefore, its appeal as a fort. It also was arranged to face an altar to the east. Furthermore, the location affected the use of stone, as the natural shapes and quality of local marble inspired the Doric and Ionic orders. Thus, the Ancient Greeks had reasons for placing the Temple of Athena Nike where it still stands today. (Ancient Greece.org)(Reidel, Brown.edu) How and by whom was the Temple of Athena Nike
  • 5. A. S. Byatt s The Pink Ribbon A. S. Byatt s story The Pink Ribbon is a story about change in a marriage as a result of a traumatic experience, as well as how the struggle between duty and love manifests themselves. In this story, a man doing what he thinks is his duty becomes overwhelmed with feelings of anger, fear, and resentment after his transition from spouse to caretaker. Through seemingly imagined encounters with a beautiful young woman, this man is reminded of his wife and what it is like to have meaningful contact with another person that is not consumed by taking care of someone else, which causes him to make a choice in the name of mercy, both for himself and his wife. Byatt shows the changes in James and Madeleine s relationship through the use of diction,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... James believed the doll Dipsy was equivalent to Mado, so the use of the word suffocating suggests that he thought Mado was suffocating or trapped and the only way to help her was to give her release through death, although it also could be hinting at the method he was going to use. Byatt wrote that every time James went outside he took huge gulping breaths, which suggests that James felt trapped himself and might have thought that if Mado were no longer around he would be able to breathe again. James visits from the fetch (234) ,Dido, also foreshadow Mado s death. A fetch in folklore is an omen of death. Since Dido reminded him of his wife and what their relationship used to be like, it makes sense that Mado s death was forthcoming. The last instance of foreshadowing is in the final paragraph of the story, ...the Teletubbies were sitting on the end of the casket shaped cradles,... (236), which, again, goes back to the symbol of the Teletubbies doll. The idea of the Teletubbies going to beds that were shaped like coffins proposes a parallel to where Mado was going to spend her last moments, which is emphasized by James telling Mado to Come to bed,...Just a rest, for a while, (236). So, are duty and love really different things? Merriam Webster defines duty as something that is done as part of a job; something that must be done because it is morally right, and love as a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person. James sense

  • 7. The Tragic Life of Sylvia Plath Essays Sylvia Plath Sylvia Plath, an open minded, free spirited author and poet of a variety of many pieces. All of Plath s poems are inspired by her personal life and how she viewed it. According to Plath, It is a feeling that no matter what the ideas or conduct of others, there is a unique rightness and beauty to life which can be shared in openness, in wind and sunlight, with a fellow human being who believes in the same basic principles (Sylvia Quotes). Reveals and proves how free spirited and understanding she was. It conveys that people in your life can be influential, but only to a certain extent; then, it is up to the individual, to find the beauty and love in your life, and to find that in another human being is beautiful. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the year 1940, Plath s father died due to the gangrene in his leg that was caused by untreated and possibly an unrecognizable form of diabetes. Plath was greatly affected by the loss of her father, which inspired her to move to Wellesley, Massachusetts. Plath achieved a full scholarship to Smith College; however, prior to attending Smith College, she had already published a story, And Summer Will not Come Again, and a poem, Ode on a Bitten Plum, which was published in Seventeen Magazine. As time progressed, Plath fought many inner, deep battles within herself, which involved marriage, sexuality, chastity, and her career, thus leading to her mental breakdown. Her morale did not improve any further or at all when she was rejected from a summer writing course at Harvard. On April 1, 1960, her daughter, Freida was born. Now that she had a child, she found very little time to write. She felt like there was no exit and that she was being held down with nowhere to go and nobody to talk to. To make matters worse, her husband, Ted Hughes, kept publishing articles, poems, and books. By Hughes continuation of publication, he was indirectly rubbing it in Plath s face. With Plath s deteriorating health and severe depression, she had a miscarriage while pregnant with her second child in February of 1961. The following year, she tried for another, and her son Nicholas Farr was born. Meanwhile,

  • 11. Comparing Bottlerack, Barnett Newman s Eve And Ana Mendieta The three works that will be compared are Marcel Duchamp s Bottlerack, Barnett Newman s Eve and Ana Mendieta s Silueta. Placed together the pieces show us three varying genres, each from different periods in the twentieth century. Between the artists we also see obvious connections in how they have challenged the spectator, and the art world alike, in viewing their art. All artists removed something , be it a body in Silueta or the purpose of the Bottlerack and Eve s figurative form or vanishing point. All were met with a critique of the processes in which their work were produced and likewise they also received admiration for their forward thinking, progressive art. There is a noticeable difference in the creative processes that have taken place to produce these works. Duchamp, it could be argued, has taken the least time in producing or creating his Bottlerack. After all, Duchamp was the inventor ...of the readymade... (Gaiger, 2003. p.63). Also call an unassisted readymade where the artist has not interfered with or altered the object and we are asked to appreciate the object, as it stands before us.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We see the challenges they have faced in pushing the art world beyond the accepted and experimenting with something new. The artists have offered us a new experience, one which asks us to reflect upon their works. One that seeks us to return to our most basic thoughts, to being that Man s hand tracing a stick through the mud to make a line... (Newman, 2002. p.574). To see art as a means of communication through expressive forms that contradict, and challenge, our reactions to what we see and hold as real in everyday life. To summarise, these artists have shown us the innovative journey their art has taken through the twentieth century, giving us an opportunity to establish new skills in interpreting

Development brought on by actions from organizations like the IIRSA can be devastating to the indigenous people. Natural resource companies can displace communities. They can also harm the indigenous people by extracting resources which the indigenous rely on for their way of life. The IIRSA is attempting to boost economic development by promoting resource extraction and agricultureproduction, but in doing so they are harming many communities that need the Chaco s resources to survive. According to a USAID Issue Brief about Tenure and Indigenous Peoplesnew infrastructure to improve access to markets, facilitate trade, and promote economic growth leads to an increase in demand for land. This new infrastructure makes it easier for settlers, merchants, and illegal loggers to clear forests and settle in indigenous territories. The USAID brief also mentions how this infrastructure has both directly and indirectly caused negative effects in the Gran Chaco region. They report how small scale illegal loggers invading indigenous titled lands follow[ed] the new transoceanic highway built as part of the IIRSA development plan, which threatens indigenous peoples in South America through interlinked set of dams, canals, and multiple routes to the Pacific. The highway crisscrosses highly fragile, biodiverse, and mainly indigenous lands of the Amazon basin and Gran

  • 18. Analysis Of The Yoknapatawpha River In As I Lay Dying Spring; hurricane. Much as these are both related to water, they differ greatly in their impact on societies while one brings hope and life to weary travelers, the other brings struggle accompanied by death. Throughout most of literary history, writers have explored this idea of poly indicative identity, whether that be with the vast depthness of water or some other symbol, and William Faulkners novelAs I Lay Dying is no exception to this idea. From rivers to the fish that inhabit them, As I Lay Dying is composed with a symphony of different symbols, however, one of the more persistent ones is that of the river. By incorporating certain aspects of the Yoknapatawpha River, Faulkner is able to allow the work to flow more smoothly, more easily incorporate ideas about the themes of death and barriers, as well as enhance the characterization of certain figures. A symbol is, at its base, a literary object, an object that besides holding a symbolic meaning also holds a literalone. Although the symbolic is generally focused upon in class, the literal must not be forgotten, for it can often be just as important the primary focus for literal objects is in terms of plot development and flow. In the novel As I Lay Dying, the Yoknapatawpha River is used to provide a physical barrier for the Bundren family. As the Bundrens, and some of their neighbors, are traveling to bury Addie, they are delayed by rainfall that has made the river ... too high to get across (111). By including this obstacle, Faulkner is able to create a situation in which more characters are introduced (e.g. Samson, Gillespie, Armstid, etc.) and events are encouraged if not for the river: Jewel would have never needed to lift the wagon from the river, the Bundrens would have gotten to Jefferson prior to Darl burning down Gillespie s barn, and most every event within the 288 page novel would be irrelevant. It is through plot development that the Yoknapatawpha River functions literally within As I Lay Dying, however, there are more abstract ways as well. While it is true that symbols have a literal meaning and function within a work, the purpose of a symbol is to make connections beyond the scope of the literal, such as with themes.

The Central Valley in California has ideal conditions for radiation fog to form. The valley is between a coastal mountain range on the West Coast and on the east side is where the Sierra Nevada mountains sit (Herckes, et. Al). Due to this topography of this area air masses become stagnant and ventilation of the valley is hindered (Herckes, et. Al). The lack of ventilation in the valley leads to temperature inversions, because of high pressure systems that form of the Great Basin (Herckes, et. Al). This leads to radiation fog forming because of inversion during nights in which a layer of moist air is below a layer of drier air (Ahrens and Sampson 97). The

People have always curious to know what happens if you take away the five essential human senses. Our senses help us make sense of in the insane, fast paced, stressed world we live in. Not having one of our senses can lead to the process of learning how to live comfortably without that certain input of senses. While having none of the senses can lead to creating your own world by hallucinating. Without having any of the senses, can you get in contact with the supernatural? One experiment suggests that it is possible depending on the person. Is it possible that depriving all of the senses from a person could be relaxing to some? Yes, having a break from the world can help relieve stress. What happens if you just take away one of the main senses from a human? It can lead to fully understanding how lucky we are to experience the world with each of our senses. What would it be like to not be able to hear, see, touch, taste and smell? That is the question that scientists have been trying to answer with Sensory Deprivation experiments throughout the years. Sensory deprivation is the deliberate removal of stimuli from one or more of the senses, (Hanchett 1). Sensory Deprivation can be scary. Black humor often deals with events that are not often associated with other forms of comedy, such as war, murder, insanity and death. The main reason that this form of comedy is so underappreciated is that it requires some thinking on the part of the audience and many people are not willing to do that. The types of humor that are popular today do not require much thinking and can be characterized as one liners. However, black humor has been used as an effective means of satire usually towards a tragic event. One of the biggest misconceptions about black humor is that it involves race. Even though this is such a great model of black comedy, Joseph Heller said that he was not aware that it would be funny when he wrote it (Catch 22, Computer). In the story, Catch 22 is a military rule that employs circular logic. An example of this is the rule that deals with avoiding combat missions: One may only be excused from flying bombing missions on the grounds of insanity; one must assert one s insanity to be excused on this basis; one who requests to be excused is presumably in fear for his life. This is taken to be proof of his sanity, and he is therefore obliged to continue flying missions; one who is truly insane presumably would not make the request. He therefore would continue flying missions, even though as an insane person he could of course be excused from them simply by asking. (Catch 22, Computer) The main themes in Heller s novel are paradox and contradiction. He used his novel as a way to show the absurdity of war and to protest World War II. Another author, Kurt Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse Five in 1969 as an analysis of the human condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel as a plot device and the bombing of Dresden in World War II, which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting point (Slaughter, wikipedia). The humor in this book comes from Vonnegut s downplay of human mortality. He uses the phrase so it goes whenever dying is mentioned. Much of

He went beyond the bounds of his power, forced thousands of natives off their land down the trail of tears , and claimed to fight for common individuals , a group which apparently only includes free white men. Today, many of our previous historical figures have become controversial from a moral and political standpoint, especially Andrew Jackson. This is due to his ownership of slaves, and his ability to follow rules, or lack thereof. Andrew Jackson s Presidency should not be admired by our current generation because it harmed many people, and he broke many constitutional laws. Andrew Jackson s political career was harmful and non beneficial. Andrew Jackson s Presidency should not be admired by our current generation because it harmed many people. When Andrew Jackson became President, he gained executive control over all of the land. This also meant that he had easier control over the Native Americans, and could force more of them off the land. In fact, Andrew Jackson became a main proprietor of the tragic Trail of Tears , a thousand mile forced trip to new lands which cost one quarter of the 16,000 natives sent down it their lives. As it happened in history, Marshall ruled that the Cherokee nation was a distinct community occupying its own territory... The legal victory proved of little benefit to the Cherokee nation, however. • 41. Fee for Service Care Versus Managed Care Essay Some researchers feel that our society has unrealistically demanded the health care system to maximize quality while lowering the costs of health care services. That if we demand this change, there is no way we are realistically considering the cost of health care. I understand that everyone wants to receive the best therapy without paying a large amount of money. When you think about this idea, this plan would take time to execute. One of the cons of living in a country like the United States is that we citizens expect to have things right when we want them. I totally agree that we deserve the best services at the lowest prices. But how should we go about executing this plan? We will have to balance the plan between two approaches, the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The dire importance of these ideas of health argue for sparing no effort, and no cost, in trying to achieve the best possible outcomes (Eddy, 1997). Secondly, are insurance, prepayment, and taxes, which are all devices our society had created for increasing the costs of healthcare. Many of the people who receive the care are not paying the costs. So, it is very easy for them to proclaim that the care they receive should not have a limit by any determination of costs. Sixty years ago, people did not have this problem, because everyone was obligated for his or her own bills (Eddy, 1997). Space prevents a full breakdown of the differences between fee for service and managed care. There are important characteristics of each that affect how trade offs between quality and cost are made. For fee for service: There is no defined population for which the insurance company is responsible. Connections with the system are initiated by the patients. The main focus is on treating sick patients. Neither physicians nor insurance companies are responsible for providing care beyond what is specified when patients seek care (Eddy, 1997). The responsibility of the insurance company is to pay the bills. Importantly, the insurance company is not responsible for the overall health of its subscribers or for the quality of care delivered by individual physicians. Physicians are left to decide what care their patients should receive.

If the question mark does not succeed in becoming the market leader, then after perhaps years of cash consumption it will degenerate into a dog when the market growth declines. Question marks must be analyzed carefully in order to determine whether they are worth the investment required to grow market share. Stars are units with a high market share in a fast growing industry (High Market Share / High Market Growth). The hope is that stars become the next cash cows. Sustaining the business unit s market leadership may require extra cash, but this is worthwhile if that s what it takes for the unit to remain a leader. When growth slows, if they have been able to maintain their category leadership stars become cash cows, else they become dogs due to low relative market share. As a particular industry matures and its growth slows, all business units become either cash cows or dogs. The natural cycle for most business units is that they start as question marks, then turn into stars. Eventually the market stops growing thus the business unit becomes a cash cow. At the end of the cycle the cash cow turns into a dog. The overall goal of this ranking was to help corporate analysts decide which of their business units to fund, and how much; and which units to sell. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Canadian electoral system is largely based on the single member plurality (SMP) system which was inherited from its former British colonial masters. The system dates back to several years before the formation of the Canadian confederation. Some of the common features of the Canadian electoral system include election candidates to represent designated geographical areas popularly known as ridings , counting and tallying of the votes casted on the basis of the districts as opposed to the parties of the candidates (Dyck, 622). Finally, a candidate only needs a simple majority over the other candidates in order to be considered a winner, even if the winner has a small percentage of votes. This system has however been heavily criticized for its winner takes all way of judging victory. Critics argue that if the winner takes over the whole system, it may result into unfair representation of the various social groups, but it may also bring into power unstable minority participation in government. For example, a candidate can win even with barely 25% of all the votes casted, while the small parties may end up with no seats in the parliament. On the other hand, the Canadian electoral system has also been accused of being undemocratic and unrepresentative in many aspects. Although the Canadian single member plurality

What was the issue at stake in Bleeding Kansas, and how did events in Kansas reflect the growing sectional division between the North and the South? The Kansas Nebraska act of 1854 allowed for Kansas to decide whether it should be a slave state or not. This would be determined by popular sovereignty, meaning that the majority on one particular side would be the ultimate decision. This caused an influx of people into Kansas to try and sway the decision of the state. There were both proslavery and antislavery citizens going to Kansas. As a result of this, there were massive conflicts that spread throughout Kansas. Many of these conflicts resulted in deaths on both sides of the argument. This showed the growing division among the North and South, and that they were willing to fight for what they believed in. These conflicts even spread to members of Congress, and outbreaks broke out within arguments. In my opinion, events such as Bleeding Kansas had negative effects on both sides of the slavery argument. It was however these same events that helped to build up to the Civil War that changed America forever. Ultimately the side of antislavery won, but they did take massive casualties as a result of the

Consulted by a business millionaire, the pastor ransacked the bible and finally arrived at a verse to support the holy matrimony. Quoting Isaiah 4:1 the pastor joined the notable influential member with three women . Does the text Isaiah 4:1 justify the polygamous wedding? During the discussion, which follows the presentation, the group was amazed at the shocking photo of a man franked with three women in their weeding attires. The scenario in a sociological dimension prompted the geographical background where the wedding could have happened. It is assumed that most Christian communities view polygamy as an abominable act, which presumably does not conform with most biblical canons. For some geographical areas, it is illegal and punishable by law, particularly in western society; yet it is acceptable in some countries and shockingly among faith communities. The expression that the Pastor flipped a verse of the Bible to accommodate polygamy , could be inferred that the pastor was either desperate for the man s money or that he was afraid of losing his membership in his church; and so, he was ready to do anything to keep his buoyant church member. However, for charity sake, we do not know the bigger picture of what really happened or what might have moved the pastor to succumb to the risky demand. Sociologically his society allows it otherwise

In fact, had we been so unfortunate as to crash into the side of the mountain that day in question, it would have been, in fact, a CFIT. One particular case of CFIT was caused by the crew not trusting their instruments. It took place in the United States, where an experienced crew of two pilots conducted a night flight from the West Coast. They took off into a very dark night, as there was very little ambient light from the moon or external lights. And a physiological effect of flying made the situation more risky.
