Designing a Field-Based Learning Activity or Program
Workshop Exercise
What major content area, program, course, and grade level will the field activity be part of?
What is the purpose of the field activity (i.e., why do you want to engage in a field activity)?
What the learning objectives do you want students to achieve?
What specific learning activities will students engage in to achieve the learning objectives?
How will students collect and analyze data (e.g. observations, taking samples of objects, structures,
processes and phenomena, as well as draw conclusions and generate new knowledge)?
What is the type and duration of FBL activity or program (e.g., field trip, study abroad, service
learning)?

Welcome to the 16th ICIE conference 2018 Paris, France Designing a Field-Based Learning Activity or Program Workshop Exercise What major content area, program, course, and grade level will the field activity be part of? What is the purpose of the field activity (i.e., why do you want to engage in a field activity)? What the learning objectives do you want students to achieve? What specific learning activities will students engage in to achieve the learning objectives? How will students collect and analyze data (e.g. observations, taking samples of objects, structures, processes and phenomena, as well as draw conclusions and generate new knowledge)? What is the type and duration of FBL activity or program (e.g., field trip, study abroad, service learning)?

Pre-Trip (How will you build foundational knowledge in students and how will you prepare students for the FBL activity?) Trip (What learning activities will students engage in to achieve the learning objectives and build on the foundational knowledge; what is the high level agenda for the FBL activity or program?) Post-Trip (How will students organize and present the data they have collected and how else will you assess their learning?)
