Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer born in 1480 who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe from 1519 to 1522. Though he was killed in the Philippines in 1521, Magellan's voyage established that one could sail around the world, making him the first person to do so. Magellan was motivated by both wealth and curiosity to explore new trade routes and lands beyond Europe.
