Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. The purpose of his expedition was to find a western route to the Spice Islands by sailing through what is now known as the Strait of Magellan. Although Magellan did not survive the entire voyage, his crew did prove that the world was round by becoming the first to sail around the entire planet, in the process naming the Pacific Ocean. Magellan faced hardships like a serious leg injury and accusations of illegal trading before achieving this historic feat.
