Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer born in 1480 who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe from 1519 to 1522. Although Magellan died during the expedition, he is considered the first person to sail around the world. He explored for reasons of accumulating wealth and curiosity, but research also suggests he was motivated by trade, having previously sailed to the Spice Islands in 1511. Magellan named the Pacific Ocean and sailed for both Portugal early in his career and later for Spain.
