Ferdinand Magellan led a fleet of five ships on an expedition to explore a western route to the Spice Islands in 1519-1522. Only one ship, the Victoria, completed the entire circumnavigation, returning with only 18 surviving crew members out of the original 200. Magellan proved that the world was round by being the first to sail around it, crossing the Pacific Ocean and reaching the Philippines before being killed in battle. The strait at the southern tip of South America and two nearby galaxies are named in his honor.
