Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer born in 1480 who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe from 1519 to 1522. Though he was killed in the Philippines in 1521, Magellan's expedition was the first to sail across the Pacific Ocean and complete a global circumnavigation, establishing trade as one of the primary motivations for his explorations. Magellan named the Pacific Ocean during his voyage.
