Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe between 1519 and 1522. He explored the passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, which is now called the Straits of Magellan. Magellan also discovered the Pacific Ocean and was the first European to lead an expedition across it. However, he died in 1521 during a battle in the Philippines, and only 18 of the original 237 crew members survived to complete the first global circumnavigation.
