Female Reproductive System Anatomy
1.identify and give the functions the parts
of the female reproductive system; and
2. explain the importance of the female
reproductive system.
LESSON OBJECTIVES
Female Reproductive System
• The reproductive
tract in women is
contained mainly
in the pelvic cavity
and perineum.
Female Reproductive System
External genitalia
It is divided to:
Internal genitalia
Female External Genitalia
Vulva is the term
given to the female
external genitalia.
The vulva includes:
• Mons pubis
• Labia majora
• Labia minora
• Clitoris
• Urethral opening
• Vaginal opening
• Perineum
Female External Genitalia
MONS PUBIS
• The triangular mound of
fatty tissue that covers
the pubic bone
• It protects the pubic
symphysis.
• During adolescence sex
hormones trigger the
growth of pubic hair on
the mons pubis.
• Hair varies in coarseness
curliness, amount, color
and thickness.
5
LABIA MAJORA
• The outer lip-like
structure
• They have a darker
pigmentation
• The Labia Majora:
⚬ Become flaccid
with age and
after childbirth
6
LABIA MINORA
• Referred to as the
“inner lips”
• Made up of
erectile,
connective tissue
that darkens and
swells during
sexual arousal.
7
CLITORIS
• The small penis-like
structure.
• Highly sensitive organ
composed of nerves,
blood vessels, and
erectile tissue
• It is made up of a shaft
and a glans.
8
Urethral opening
• The urethra is the
tube that carries
urine from the
bladder to the
outside of the body.
Its opening is
located below the
clitoris, directly
above the vaginal
opening
9
VAGINAL OPENING
• A mucous
membrane normally
covers the opening
into the vagina,
called the hymen.
• Posterior to the
vaginal opening are
the two
Bartholin’s glands.
9
PERINEUM
• The muscle and
tissue located
between the vaginal
opening and anal
canal.
• It supports and
surrounds the lower
parts of the urinary
and digestive tracts.
10
9
Bartholin’s Gland
The Bartholin's
(BAHR-toe-linz)
glands secrete
fluid that helps
lubricate the
labial opening of
vagina.
11
Female Internal Genitalia
The internal
genitalia consists
of the:
• Vagina
• Cervix
• Uterus
• Fallopian Tubes
• Ovaries
VAGINA
• It is a distensible
fibromuscular tube
that extends from
the perineum
through the pelvic
floor and into the
pelvic cavity
• It measures
approximately 8–
12 cm in length.
15
VAGINA
• The anterior wall of the
vagina is related to the
base of the bladder and
to the urethra; in fact,
the urethra is embedded
in, or fused to, the
anterior vaginal wall.
• Posteriorly, the vagina is
related principally to the
rectum.
CERVIX
The cervix is the lower portion (or the "neck")
of the uterus. It is approximately 1 inch long
and 1 inch wide and opens into the vagina.
• Known as the
“Womb”.
• The uterus is a
thick-walled
muscular organ
in the midline
between the
bladder and
rectum.
Uterus
19
Ovaries contain the
developing follicles
which produce
human egg cells
(ova/oocytes) in a
cyclic manner
The ovary
Egg cells
At birth, a female’s
ovaries contain all
the eggs she will
ever produce.
However, the eggs
do not start to
mature until she
enters puberty.
Egg cells
A female typically
has approximately 1
to 2 million eggs at
birth, with about
300,000 to
400,000 remaining
by puberty .
