During the four years of high school, your body
changes remarkably.
This requires:
 A lot of sleep
 Extra nutrients (from food)
 Water
Sleep
Sleep is food for the brain!
 Important things happen while you sleep
 Your body repairs itself
 Fights off infection
 Grows
 Makes neurotransmitters
 These help with mood and learning
Sleep
How much sleep do you need?
 9-10 hours of sleep per night!
 Too little sleep can cause:
 Poor memory/difficult time learning
 Inability to stay awake during the day
 Depression, anxiety, anger, and mood swings
 Acne
 Fatigue
 Poor appearance (bags under the eyes, etc.)
 Obesity
 Illness
 Sleep disorders, like insomnia
Water
 Water:
 Your body is over 50% water!
 Your brain is about 85% water!
 What it does for you:
 Carries oxygen to your cells, organs and brain
 Helps you get rid of toxins through sweating
 Helps you digest your food
 Part of your immune system-fights of illness
 Helps maintain body temperature
 Helps your cells absorb nutrients
 Protects your organs
 Metabolizes body fat

 What if I don’t get enough?
 Dehydration:
 #1 cause of headaches
 Sleepiness
 Muscle cramps
 Lightheadedness
 Hard time concentrating

 You are growing and changing quickly! You need:
 20-33% MORE

 Zinc and other minerals
 Vitamins (especially the B’s)
 Smart Fats
What Should I Eat?
 Three meals a day.
 Fruits
 Veggies
 Meats (includes eggs)
 Dairy
 Grains
 Fats (not a lot, but you do need some)
How much should I eat?
 Teenage boys need approximately 2200 calories per
day
 Teenage girls need about 1800 calories per day
 Why the difference?
 Young men naturally have more muscle mass—
muscles burn additional calories

Feed your brain

  • 1. Feed Your Body, Feed Your Brain! Eat better, feel better, learn better
  • 3. Your Body is HUNGRY During the four years of high school, your body changes remarkably. This requires:  A lot of sleep  Extra nutrients (from food)  Water
  • 4. Sleep Sleep is food for the brain!  Important things happen while you sleep  Your body repairs itself  Fights off infection  Grows  Makes neurotransmitters  These help with mood and learning
  • 5. Sleep How much sleep do you need?  9-10 hours of sleep per night!  Too little sleep can cause:  Poor memory/difficult time learning  Inability to stay awake during the day  Depression, anxiety, anger, and mood swings  Acne  Fatigue  Poor appearance (bags under the eyes, etc.)  Obesity  Illness  Sleep disorders, like insomnia
  • 6. Water  Water:  Your body is over 50% water!  Your brain is about 85% water!  What it does for you:  Carries oxygen to your cells, organs and brain  Helps you get rid of toxins through sweating  Helps you digest your food  Part of your immune system-fights of illness  Helps maintain body temperature  Helps your cells absorb nutrients  Protects your organs  Metabolizes body fat
  • 7. Water  What if I don’t get enough?  Dehydration:  #1 cause of headaches  Sleepiness  Muscle cramps  Lightheadedness  Hard time concentrating

  • 9. Nutrition  It’s not just how much you eat, but WHAT you eat!  Some foods actually do more harm than good  Examples:  Foods with MSG  Soda  Foods high in sugar
  • 10. Food for Thought What if your body was a car? What happens if you don’t put gas in your car?
  • 11. Food for Thought What if you put in the WRONG gas? Diesel instead of gas?
  • 12. Food for Thought  Gasoline is what keeps the car running.  Food is what keeps you running! The wrong food is like putting diesel fuel in a gasoline engine. Your body cannot run well.
  • 13. What Teens Need  You are growing and changing quickly! You need:  20-33% MORE  Protein  Calcium  Iron  Zinc and other minerals  Vitamins (especially the B’s)  Smart Fats

  • 15. What Should I Eat?  Three meals a day.  Fruits  Veggies  Meats (includes eggs)  Dairy  Grains  Fats (not a lot, but you do need some)
  • 16. How much should I eat?  Teenage boys need approximately 2200 calories per day  Teenage girls need about 1800 calories per day  Why the difference?  Young men naturally have more muscle mass— muscles burn additional calories
  • 17. Calories  How many calories are in:  A Big Mac  Medium McDonald’s French Fry  A Medium Coke  A small bag of Doritos  Grandma’s chocolate chip cookies  A Twix Bar  An apple  A bag of baby carrots
  • 18. What Shouldn’t I Eat?  Sugar-  Slows down brain function  Interferes with your ability to fight off illness  Can help contribute to diabetes  Damages your liver  Causes mood swings  Is highly addictive  Contributes to obesity  Has nothing helpful in it

What Shouldn’t I Eat?  MSG  Monosodium glutamate  Also called hydrolyzed soy protein, hydrolyzed whey protein, “natural flavors”, autolyzed yeast extract, glutamic acid, and others  Overexcites your brain cells-even to the point of cell death!  Can cause headaches, fatigue, fogginess, mood swings  Can contribute to learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Alzheimer's, and more
  • 21. What Shouldn’t I Eat?  Where do you find MSG?  Most chips—Cheetos and Doritos!  Top Ramen  Most frozen foods  Most snack foods  Where don’t you find it?  Fresh, whole foods
  • 22. But…but…but…  Try making a change….see how you feel  Carrots instead of Doritos  Apple slices instead of cookies  A protein bar instead of candy  Trail mix or any other nuts  Any fresh fruit  Yogurt  String Cheese  Water instead of soda or an energy drink  Eat three meals
