INTRODUCTION
 FedEx Corporation, originally known as FDX Corporation, is an American global
courier delivery services company headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee.
 FedEx Corporation was founded in 1973 by entrepreneur Fred Smith.
 The name "FedEx" is a syllabic abbreviation of the name of the company's
original air division, Federal Express, which was used from 1973 until 2000.
 Worlds largest cargo air fleet with over 600 aircrafts.
 Products-Post delivery, express mail, freight forwarding, third-party logistics
 Services- FedEx Express (Orange "Ex")
FedEx Ground (Green "Ex")
FedEx Smart Post (Grey "Ex")
FedEx Freight (Red "Ex")
FedEx Trade Networks (Yellow "Ex")
Contd..
 Federal Express was among the first express transportation companies to
realize the benefits of technology. As early as 1978, just five years after it
began operations, the company pioneered the first automated customer
service center.
 To provide real-time package tracking for each shipment, FedEx uses one of
the world's largest computer and telecommunications networks. The
company's couriers operate Super Tracker® hand-held computers, to record
the transit of shipments through the FedEx integrated network.
 FedEx's use of technology focuses on the customer, rather than merely on
remaining competitive. With FedEx, businesses can determine the status of
their packages at all possible locations along the delivery route in real time.
Customers can track packages in three ways: via the FedEx Web site on the
Internet, by using FedEx Ship Manager at fedex.com, or FedEx
World Shipping Software.
How it Works
Technologies Used By
FedEx
RFID
Radio frequency identification devices (RFID) are low-cost tags that
assist in the tracking of goods and vehicles. These devices are placed
on individual items and can either be active, i.e., constantly emitting a
radio frequency signal; or passive, i.e., only emitting a signal when
queried by an outside source.
FedEx has been using RFID technology since 1999. RFID helps to
reduce inventory overload in storage as well as the tracking and
monitoring of shipments.
FedEx uses RFID to track Cargo and vehicle, to trace goods, their
containers, and their conveyances from the point of origin to their
destination.
The RFID tags only serve as a tracking mechanism; they do not possess
any effective security applications.
COSMOS
"COSMOS" (Customers, Operations and Services Master Online
System), is a computerized package tracking system that monitors
every phase of the delivery cycle at Federal Express.
PROCESS
 Customer service rep enter shipping information into COSMOS
 alerts the dispatcher closest to the pick-up area
 Dispatchers relay pick-up and delivery information to the courier via
DADS (digitally assisted dispatch computer systems).
Contd..
 Super Trackers (hand held devices) scan the progress of the package
( avg 5 times)
 Couriers simply scan the bar code on every waybill with their Super
Tracker, at every stage of the delivery process. (at time of pick-up, on
arrival at the origin station, at the final station, when placed on the
van of the courier's route and at delivery).
 Super Trackers retain and transmit package information such as
destination, routing instructions and the type of service requested.
 Once a courier returns to the van, the information is downloaded
from the Super Tracker to DADS, which updates the package location
in the COSMOS system.
GOS: Global Operations Control System
Tracking of system in real-time.
Tracking real-time movement and position of flights and trucks- They
have flight tracking tools that show us the exact location of every
FedEx aircraft in the sky.
Monitor weather condition- In case of bad weather, they execute a
backup plan, which included rerouting aircraft through other
hubs. Events like this demonstrate how much trust and confidence
FedEx has in the meteorology team. Our team uses weather
dashboards to pull forecasting information in real time.
