Substance abuse like alcohol, smoking, and illegal drugs are major preventable causes of intellectual disabilities because they deprive the fetus of oxygen and nutrients. Poor nutrition and certain infections during pregnancy also increase the risks of developmental issues. While genetic testing and vaccines have prevented some causes of mental retardation, environmental influences remain a leading factor, especially among those with mild intellectual disabilities.
