2. Why We Went To War The Cuban people were occupied by the Spaniards and they abused them. We wanted to expand our country. The ship the Maine was sent to Havana, Cuba and it blew up when it got there. They said that a Cuban mine did it, although it was actually internal combustion.
3. We were interested in Certain Islands We needed to expand and taking Hawaii was just a part of Manifest Destiny according to McKinley. Taking the Philippines would keep us open to the markets of China. Taking foreign lands would mean we could get stuff cheaply that we couldn’t grow/make/find in America.
4. Heroes and Villains Hero – Theodore Roosevelt, he fought in the “weary walkers”. Hero – President McKinley, he didn’t want war because he knew of the pain war caused. Villain – Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, he wanted to waste American lives for economic gain. Villain- Journalists, made up stories about Cuba to make a profit.
5. News from the war 1898 – The US battleship, Maine, blew up from unknown causes. We entered Cuba and fought and won against the Spanish. William McKinley got assassinated and Theodore Roosevelt became president.
6. War’s Outcome We came out with a bunch of annexed islands that we could profit from. The islands also gave us protection because we could put bases to protect us. Northerners and Southerners scars were healed because they fought together against the same enemy. Theodore Roosevelt came back a hero and got elected governor, which led him to become president.
