2. EXTRUSION PROCESS
* it is a process used to create objects of a
fixed cross-section profile. A material is
pushed or drawn through a die of the
desired cross-section.
* it is used for manufacturing long and
straight metal parts. The shape of the
cross-sections can be solid round,
rectangular, to T shapes, L shapes and
Tubes etc. Extrusion is done by squeezing
the metal in a die by using a mechanical or
hydraulic press.Powerpoint Templates Page 2
3. • Its ability to create very complex cross-
sections.
• Work materials that are brittle.
It is because the material only
encounters compressive and shear
stresses. It also forms finished parts
with an excellent surface finish.

of
Extrusion Process

5. 1. Surface cracking-
It occurs when the surface of an
extrusion splits. This is generally
caused by the high values of extrusion
temperature, speed or friction. The
cracking may also occur at lower
temperatures, in case the extruded
product temporarily sticks to the die.

6. 2. Pipe-
A flow pattern that draws the surface
oxides and impurities to the center of
the product. Such a pattern is normally
caused by high friction or cooling of
the outer regions of billet.

7. 3. Internal cracking-
It occurs when the center of extrusion
develops cracks or voids. These cracks
are directly attributed to a state of
hydrostatic tensile stress at the
centerline in the deformation zone in
the die.

Trim parts as used in automobile and
construction equipment, railings, window
frame members, structural parts etc.

12. Ugine Sejournet Type Extrusion Processes.
The Ugine Sejournet extrusion process is used for
high-alloy steel tubes and pipe such as those of
stainless steel and specially shaped pipe. A descaled
billet, heated to approximately 2300_F (1260_C), is
placed in the vertical press compartment with an
extrusion die at its bottom. After applying a hydraulic
ram to the billet, a piercing mandrel within the ram
punches the billet, producing a cylinder from which
the punch piece is ejected through the extrusion die
opening.

13. Following this, the ram is activated to apply
pressure to the billet, and the billet is extruded
through the annulus formed between the
piercing mandrel and die cavity. In horizontal
presses, piercing is done as a separate
operation, or a hollow is used with amandrel
and die. Themandrels and dies are made of
high-alloy steels containing tungsten,
molybdenum, and chromium having Rockwell
C hardness values of approximately 46.
Powdered glass is the lubricant used in this
process.

14. Advantages of Sejournet Process
• Stronger products
• Better dimension precision
• Surface finish
• Savings in material waste
Disadvantage of Sejournet Process
• The extruded material should have a
center barrier for metal support.
