Applying A Thin Bonded Concrete Overlay
individual repairs, consider using a thin bonded concrete overlay. Fig 26: Popouts, Scaling and
Spalling.
2.11 SCALING
Scaling is the general loss of surface mortar exposed to freezing and thawing. The aggregate is
usually clearly exposed and often stands out from the concrete.
2.11.1 Causes
1.Scaling is primarily a physical action caused by hydraulic pressure from water freezing within the
concrete and not usually caused by chemical corrosive action.
2. When pressure exceeds the tensile strength of concrete, scaling can result if entrained air voids
are not present to act as internal pressure relief valves.
3. Scaling is also caused due to the use of deicing solutions. Fig 27: Scaling of Concrete Surface
2.11.2 Remedies
Begin by thoroughly removing any loose material to create a relatively smooth surface. Contact the
repair material manufacturer for guidance. Most manufacturers suggest surface preparation should
include repairing shallow delaminations, surface, scaling, and aggregate popouts. This may require
grinding the resulting rough surface. The committee recommends trying to achieve a concrete
surface profile in the range of 3 to 5 as described in the International Concrete Repairs Institute s
Document 03732.
This is often the best range for applying most liquid applied membranes and most thin coatings.
Most liquid applied products are not intended to level off or hide imperfections, although trowel
grade materials can sometimes be used for this purpose.

Progressive Education Essay
John Keating, a student at Welton Academy inspired his fellow classmates, to meet in caves and
read challenging poetry of the past, not with flashcards, but with these words, Now, my class,
you will learn to think for yourselves again. You will learn to savor words and language. No
matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world. Typically, students do not
hear enough of this type of passion in a traditional classroom. However, a progressive classroom,
be it a cave or college can inspire students to memorize facts, not because they have to, but rather
because they want to for the betterment of humanity. Society desperately needs students educated
in a progressive style because America needs students who realize... Show more content on

Educational philosopher, Marie Montessori was a strong advocate for such learning, particularly for
children under age three who have a strong interest in learning through the use of movement and
verbal play (So what s Montessori and Piaget?).
John Dewey, another educational philosopher believed Education is a social process. Education is
growth. Education is, not a preparation for life; education is life itself. (Inc.) He felt that learning
took place only when students had internalized what they had gained through experience and
practiced it in their own lives. In a progressive classroom, the teacher designs experiences for
students with the idea that through experience, students build knowledge and skills. A society of
individuals conforming to studying flashcards may be good, but a society of literate individuals
consciously aware of why and how the facts on the flashcards and in mass media can solve new
problems is better.
A progressive classroom looks different, and a progressive teacher inspires unique thinking in
individual students differently, as well. Instead of being strict with a set curriculum and specific
subject to cover, teachers find their students present interests, abilities, and needs. Developing
individualized education plans based on student interests and

The Trials And Tribulations Of Racism
The most important theme in this book was the trials and tribulations of racism because it was
woven in every part of the plot, it contributed to the conflict and resolutions, and gave the story a
connection to current events, helping the reader s comprehension. Each twist and turn of the
story had hints of association with the struggles of racism. From the trial in court to the
discovery of the body to the flashbacks of back stories of the characters, this theme was
delicately integrated. In Kabuo Miyamoto s situation, the court was harsh on his case, and he
couldn t get himself a very good lawyer, as no one would offer to defend the enemy . They were
quick to jump to conclusions. He got hit pretty hard with something fairly flat, Art. Puts me in
mind of a type of gun butt wound I saw a few times in the war. One of those kendo strikes the
Japs used. Also, even though the Japanese are a main part of the story, they were portrayed as
isolated and reclusive. They were very cold to other people, a result of a mindset of superiority.
As they only associated with others of their race, they were untrusting and distant from others.
Kabuo didn t even trust the lawyer who was to keep him out of prison. As the book switches time
frames, there were subtle or evident signs of challenges of racial tension everywhere. You could
see how this theme had effects on everything in a slightly different manner, depending on the
situation. Many of the conflicts in the book were based off

Canine Hip Dysplasia
This study was designed to determine the genetic correlations between canine hip dysplasia
(CHD) and canine elbow dysplasia (CED) in German shepherds. The study was extended to the
genetic correlation of the dogs diagnosed as borderline for both hip and elbow dysplasia. Hip
dysplasia is abnormal formation of the hip socket causing a painful arthritis in the joints; it is a
polygenic trait affected by environmental factors. Elbow dysplasia is caused by abnormal growth
of cells, vague tissue, or bone resulting in elbow pain. Materials used were radiographic
examination data taken from the German breeding association for German Shepherd dogs (GSD).
These examinations recorded of hip joints associated with CHD and elbow joints associated with

This study was done with 843 German shepherd dogs, because German shepherds are the largest
purebred dog population in Europe with an estimated 35% prevalence for CHD (large number for
phenotypic and genetic variance). Within the total of 843 German shepherds only 405 were males
and 438 were females. The control was the birth season; only dogs born between 2000 2005 were
included in this study. In the study, they used radiographs, CHD scores, and EDTA blood samples
for all the dogs from the official guidelines of the Federation Cynologique International (FCI). CHD
scores were scaled by CHD A being normal hip joints, CHD C having slight signs of CHD, CHD D
with moderate signs, and CHD E had severe signs of CHD. Only 277 out of 843 were CHD A
classified as unaffected and 557 were CHD C, CHD D, or CHD E classified as affected for the
purpose of this study. Various techniques were used in this study to find the SNPs associated
with CHD like PCR products, NucleoSpin Kit 96, PTC and , DYEnamic ET Terminator Cycle
Sequencing Kit,, and many more. A GeneMapper was used to evaluate the data of the study. As
they studied 37 SNPs in 95 CHD cases, those SNPs were located in 13 dog chromosomes (CFA1,
3, 4, 8, 9, 16, 19, 26, 29, 32, 33, 34, and 35);

The Impact Of Business Technology On The Workplace
Business technology these days can include a large variety of things such as... computers/laptops,
networks and software applications, electronic whiteboards and smart boards, facsimile machines,
telephones landline and mobile, PDA devices (personal digital assistant) blackberry s, MP3
players, television and video equipment. By using any one of these pieces of technologyin the
workplace as a leader/manager it can make scheduling and monitoring your jobs alot easier.
Much of the technology used today is used in he workplace a good example of this is instead of
sending out letters today s version using technology is sending an email. It s quick, it s easy and
its efficient. Alot of mangers/leaders rely on today s technology. It makes there work alot easier
and they can work alot more efficiently and effectively.
As a leader/manager there are many things you can do to maintain and achieve a good work/life
balance. Some of these things could be:
1 Using flexiable work hours You can meet competing needs without reducing the amount of time
that you work. These schemes can take the form of varying start and finishing times, that alow you
and your employee s to work efficiently, and accomodate personal committments, such as picking
up the chldren from school. Good workers/employee s can be trusted to do what it takes to get the
job done.

Characteristics Of Effective Leadership Styles
Characteristics of Effective Leadership Styles
Presented to
Perry Barton, Instructor
MGMT 1115 Leadership
By
William Allen
June 21, 2015
What are the effective leadership styles? More importantly what are the characteristics of these
styles. This paper will discuss in detail three topics and how they relate to effective leadership
styles. We will start by evaluating business situations to determine whether the leadership style is
participative, autocratic, leadership grid based or entrepreneurial. Next we will compare and
contrast the leadership styles in various situations based upon the leadership differences by
gender. Lastly, we will decide the best leadership style for specific situations. Different business
situations require specific leadership styles. These leadership styles include participative,
autocratic, leadership grid based and entrepreneurial. The Participative leadership style is
characterized by a leader who turns to the team for input, ideas, and observations instead of
making all decisions on their own. The leader recognizes that the team has skills and ideas that
could benefit the decision making process. Participative leadership requires the whole team to be
involved. Benefits of this style of leadership includes having subordinates feeling empowered and
important. Its also able to give different strategies and decisions from perspectives of other people
which can benefit decision making in that the decision in not

Philip K. Dick s Influence On His Writings
Philip K. Dick an American author, most renowned for his works in science fiction, played a
crucial role in the development of the science fiction media industry today. His inspiration while
writing novels was unconventional, and ranged from visitations of a pink beam named 2 3 74, to
a special insight of a force outside of our universe which he referred to as Zebra. Philip K. Dick
had many influences on his writings such as drug use, Paranoid Personality Disorder, and
Schizophrenia. Dick s life left a massive impact on his writings and, throughout his novels, readers
are able to observe recurring apocalyptic like settings and the common theme of a totalitarian
government, which, together, create insightful social commentaries.
Philip K. Dick had several mental illnesses which had heavily influenced his writing. He often
reported recurring hallucinations of a pink beam along with other shapes and geometric patterns,
as well as claiming that he was living as a persecuted Christian in Rome named Thomas during the
first century AD (Aaronson). In addition to his mental illnesses, he had a history of drug use as
well as a struggle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It wasn t until around the 1950s to 60s where he went through a really significant creative period
(Fisher). Dick claimed to have contact with a force outside of Earth, called Zebra, which
sparked his creativity. These visions also inspired him to question and theorize the origins and
meanings of the human experience. Dick s claim of having contact with an outside force was
likely due to one of his several mental illnesses; however it did give him the motivation he needed
to continue writing. During the time of his newfound inspiration, he wrote some of his most
famous novels like The Man in the High Castle and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. The

Conversions of Alcohols to Alkyl Halides
Conversions of Alcohols to Alkyl Halides: 1 Propanol and 2 Pentanol Introduction One way
scientist gets alkyl halides is by using the manipulation of an alcohol. When alcohols are treated
with HBr or HCl; they can undergo a nucleophile substation reaction to generate an alkyl halide
and water2. Using the structure of the alcohols they are able to use SN1 or SN2 mechanisms.
For both these mechanisms though, the OH group must be pronated shown in Figure 1. R OH +
H Br+ R OH2 +Br Figure 1. This figure is the protonation of the OH group from the alcohol SN1
is a limiting mechanism that is a unimolecular nucleophic substation reaction. In this mechanism
it involves two steps, one in which the leaving group leaves and then forms a carbocation
intermediate, shown in figure 2. Then it is able to break bonds between carbon and making it
able for carbon to leave the group before the bond forming with nucleophile begins1. R OH2R+ +

Br resulting in the production of RBr While the mechanisms for SN2 is a biomolecular reaction.
These two species are involved in the rate determine step3. Once the nucleophile attacks, though it
is allowed to form a nucleophile, that then forms a transition state and then results in the final
product, as shown in Figure 3. + R OH2 RBr +H2O Br Figure 3. Figure 3 shows the attacking of Br

Holmes Is Not A Successful Leader
Theranos Chairman, CEO, and Founder Elizabeth Holmes is a successful leader; However,
Holmes is not a successful manager. On a leadership basis Elizabeth Holmes has established a
vision for Theranos and has assembled many others to follow that vision, Holmes embraces
change making Theranos more efficient and effective, and Holmes is always looking ahead in
order to make sure Theranos stays innovative and goal oriented. On a managerial spectrum,
Holmes fails to set precise standards, does not follow the controlling function of management,
and ignores planning and decision making necessary to the long term survival of Theranos.
Leaders must communicate a vision and rally others around that vision. (Nickels, p. 196)
Elizabeth Holmes has repeatedly stated envisions about a world in which no one ever has to say
goodbye too soon. (Stewart, 2015) Holmes vision has carried over to the company s mission
statement. Our mission is to make actionable information accessible to everyone at the time it
matters. By making actionable information accessible to everyone in the world at the time it
matters most, we are working to facilitate the early detection and prevention of disease, and
empower people everywhere to live their best possible lives. (Theranos Inc.) Great leaders set a
vision for an organization then use that vision to build a mission statement. (Nickels, p. 189) A
mission statement should outline an organization s fundamental purpose. (Nickels, p. 189) Holmes

Beowulf Vs Dante The Pilgrim
What is a hero? Maya Angelou believed that a hero is any person really intent on making this a
better place for all people. When the word hero comes to my mind, I see someone who is noble in
character and is respected for his or her brave actions. A Christian hero is someone who displays
qualities of a regular herobut has qualities that are similar to characteristics of Jesus Christ. Jesus
was a man who was humble, courageous, and a man who helped others. Beowulf is a better
example of a Christian hero than Dante the Pilgrim because Beowulf exemplifies the characteristics
of humbleness, being courageous, and helping others more than Dante the Pilgrim does. For a hero
to be humble, they have to not be arrogant and be courteously respectful... Show more content on

There are 3 occasions that Beowulf helps others. The first occasion is when Beowulf goes to
visit King Hrothgar and the king begs him to help and to fight Grendel for him and his kingdom
(Beowulf, 455 458). The second occasion is when King Hrothgar beseeched Beowulf to go and
battle Grendel s mother (Beowulf, 2131). The third occasion is when King Hygelac is killed and
his wife wants Beowulf to take over as king because she believes that her son is too young to lead
and protect the kingdom. But instead Beowulf honors, guides and provides support for the prince
(Beowulf, 2365 2378). In contrast, Dante the Pilgrim does not help others. Yes, he is seen as a
character who pities the sinners at first but he does not help them. Instead, he wants to know their
names and stories so he can put it into his notes (Inferno, XXXII). Dante the Pilgrim is using the
sinners for their stories and does not care to help them at least feel better. A Christian hero is
characterized for helping others because that is what Jesus did. Beowulf was a helpful person to
others, while Dante the Pilgrim did not seem to help no one that asked for his

Crime and Punishment Essay examples
Crime and Punishment
In his book Crime and Punishment , Dostoevsky explores the path of Raskolnikov who has many
problems and obstacles throughout his life. He commits murder and is faced with the long and
mentally extremely painful journey of seeking redemption.
Raskolnikov believes that by a law of nature men have been somewhat arbitrarily divided into two
groups of ordinary and extraordinary . Raskolnikov believes that the duty of the ordinary group is
to just exist, in order to form the world and the society. The second group, those who are
extraordinary , are a step above the normal. They have the ability to overstep normal bounds and
violate the rights of those who are simply ordinary. They are the prime movers; they ... Show more

However, once he realized that he had made mistakes, he began to question his theory. After all the
frustration, he decided to go to the scene of the crime. This gave him a rush that made him feel
invincible. He believed that this would prove if he was truly super . Once he realized that he wasn
t part of this class, he suffered a mental breakdown.
Raskolnikov s suffering has a direct relationship with his guilt over his crimes. It is also due to
his recognition of his failure to meet his theory. However another controlling idea behind his
punishment is a result of his dual personality and his obsession to prove his theory. He is best
represented as being either cold, intellectual and isolated from society, or as being warm and
compassionate. The murder is the result of his intellectual side, trying to determine whether or not
he fits his extraordinary man theory. It was this side of his personality that develops the crime and
carries out his plan, forcing the humane side to suffer for his actions. Both Raskolnikov and
Svidrigailov are headed down the same path throughout the novel. They share the same goal of
redemption. Dunya was the same objective to Svidrigailov as the superman theory to Raskolnikov.

Hi Dawn very detailed post! The Chameleon Effect can account for a lot of the inconsistencies that
my assessment depicted. This is the constant, unconscious change in myself , as I struggled to fit
in with my environment, or the people around me. It is, essentially, a roller coaster identity. It is
the revelation of a basic inefficacy or strain in producing an unwavering sense of self. You
mentioned that stress often causes you to be hard on yourself and others. I too suffer from being
very hard on myself, but I found that the struggle came from me trying to blend in with my
environment. As a result, I may have offered to much input into a conversation, but didn t get much

Arguments In Favor Of Animal Testing
Hannah Bjorklund
Mr. Wills
English 10
2 February 2016
Animal Testing Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of
compassion to embrace all living creatures... (Einstein). Every year, an immense number of animals
are unwillingly subjected to testing in laboratories across the United States. If action is not taken,
millions of lab animals will continue to die and suffer not only in America, but universally. Animal
testing stems all the way back to the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Arabs, and has since then
expanded into a global issue (Scutti). Currently, more than 26 million animals are used for product
development and drug testing, as well as medical research ( Should ). Many, if not most, of these
lab tests ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, the practice has produced many treatments necessary in saving human lives. For example, the
discovery of the polio vaccine reduced global instances of the disease from 350 thousand cases
in 1988 to 223 in 2012 ( Should ). Considering over 371 million people worldwide have diabetes
(Castillo), the invention of insulin has saved countless lives since its discovery. Animal testing has
also offered a better understanding of conditions such as tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, multiple
sclerosis, many types of cancer like leukemia and breast cancer, and countless other diseases (
Should ). Not only does animal research yield lifesaving medical treatments and advancements, the
animals involved are protected by various laws and regulations. The most prominent of these laws
is the Animal Welfare Act, or AWA, which has been in effect since 1966. Not only does the AWA
regulate the types of animals tested on, it also requires minimum housing standards for the research
animals. For instance, all lab animals must be provided with a suitable enclosure size, fresh food
and water, and a comfortable habitat temperature ( Should ). Furthermore, all persons requesting to
use animals for experimentation must have their request approved by their facility s Institutional
Animal Care and Use Committee, or IACUC. All facilities are also required to employ
veterinarians, animal care specialists, and animal health technicians to best insure considerate
treatment of the lab animals ( Should ). While living in poor conditions is mainly bad for the
animals, it also affects the results of the experiments themselves. Neglected animals produce
inaccurate test results, due to many of their characteristics only being observable if they are
contented, meaning humane treatment of lab animals is better for the researchers as

including resources and the treatment of natives. Both men were strong leaders, although they both

was not as cautious with resources as he could be. Magellan started his journey with very little,
probably leading to his demise. Overall, Zheng Heand Magellan started with varying levels of

Media Discrimination In The Media
1.Title IX signed into law on June 23rd, 1972 by President Richard M. Nixon states that no
person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be
denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity
receiving federal financial assistance. (Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, 44 Fed.
Reg. at 71413). Since this law was enacted we have seen a dramatic increase in female sports
participation. Tile IX has had a positive impact on female athletes as females now make up over
40% of college athletes... compared to two percent before the time of the legislation
(Staurowsky Weight, 2001, Pg. 190). Although Title IX has increased participation of female
athletes it has not aided in achieving equality for women and girls in sports. I believe the barriers
that prevent equality for female athletes can be broken down into two categories media coverage,
and public perception. The media has majority control over what the public believes is important
and most recently female athletes received 1.6% of television coverage, 4.9% of magazine covers,
and only 9.7% of featured sports articles (Fink, 2015). Not only do female athletes not get enough
media coverage, but when they do the focus is often on their physical appearance, femininity, and
/ or heterosexuality (Fink, 2015, Pg. 331). This coverage creates a negative public perception
toward female athletes. Thus the public believes that sports

In case of emergency if any child either does not feel comfortable in that space or needs
immediate attention, wants to be with his or her parent/parents, or is lost, the staff in these
respective rooms is required to use a pager to let out that information to people that are in charge of
the sound system and, that information is shared on the television screens inside the church, even if
the sermon or worship is going on. On another note, if the pager does not work, the staff serving at
the welcome desk is responsible for letting out that information in the same way asking sound
system operators to coordinate.
The main door to the church auditorium opens to the south of the coffee lab. A nursing room for

The Hagia Sophi The Nika Riot
The Hagia Sophia came out of the Nika riot. This impressive structure was part of a reconstruction
effort by emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora, after most of Constantinople was burned. The
Hagia Sophia is a beautiful church with a central dome that has a diameter of 101 feet, two half
domes that double the interior length of the church to 200 feet. This awe inspiring building has had
an eventful history and after the capture of Constantinoplein 1453 by the Turks who then added the
minaret(s). This paper will explore the minaret that was thought to be the first, and what the role of
this was.
A minaret is a tower typically found adjacent to mosques, traditionally used for the Muslim call to
prayer. The Hagia Sophia started out as a Christian church, but after being taken over in 1453 was
converted to a mosque thanks to Sultan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They then added a minaret which was the first sign of conversion from church to mosque. (28)
Over the year s historians have accepted that the minarets were added by different sultans which
was emphasized by the fact that they used different materials to build these huge towers that stand
approximately 60m tall. (28 29) There are four minarets but the original one is thought to have
been removed in the sixteenth century. (28) A few days after the fall of Constantinople a tower
appears to have been constructed. The Turks seemed to use this tower pending the completing of
their minaret. The minaret was to be constructed on the turret at the south side of the west window.
Between 1453 and 181 Mehmed the Conqueror decided to make a grand minaret. To do this they
may have used the neglected tower of the Byzantine empire. In April of 1573 the minaret was in
need of repair of external buttresses and so was the tower over the main entrance, which may have
still been used occasionally for

research repository is considered the leading scholarly file of research in the social and

drawing tests indexed in PsycINFO. This output illustrates that 73% of all references have
appeared since 1989 (614 of 840 citations) based on Total output; for journal references (69%),
for books (88%), for dissertations (89%). Based on this analysis there has been no decline on the
volume of research on drawing techniques evident in journal publications or books over the past
decade. Table 2 summarizes survey findings of both academic and applied settings on training
emphasis andusage of drawing techniques since 1989. This analysis includes the 60 published
studies that were identified in journal publications, based on clinician/practitioner and academic
/trainingsamples, although the vast majority of the data pool is based on research conducted in
the USA. Findings Of note, 2 caveats are in order: First, survey results are almost always based
only on those respondents who use tests or based on official clinical records;hence, many studies
report data on less than 50% of sample surveyed due to a high percentage of non responders. Thus,
in the aggregate, individual tests may be popular , but only within the parameters of professionals
who rely on tests in assessment. Second, an individual test s ranking is

Cultural Rituals Of Women During The American Civil War
The American Civil War was the bloodiest war in American military history. One crucial
significance about this war was that it was fought amongst Americans rather than against a foreign
foe. While many focus on the causes of the civil war, there were advances made possible, as a
result of war, which should be brought into light. The American civil warcreated new jobs for
women, brought about cultural rituals that are the norm of society today, and made westward
expansion possible. As men went off to war, women had to find ways to provide for their
families until the return of their men. Women took over farm tasks, filled jobs at schools and
offices, worked in factories, and even became nurses to make wages. Women even became spies
and scouts to aid in the war effort. This new found independence would eventually push women to
question their submissive roles and begin fighting for their equal rights. Clara Barton, founder of
the American Red Cross, put it perfectly: At the war s end, woman was at least fifty years in
advance of the normal position which continued peace would have assigned her. ... Show more

Due to the high morality rate of soldiers during the Civil War, the government began a system to
identify the bodies of the deceased for their families. To better ensure that their bodies would be
identified, soldiers began wearing their names and positions pinned to their uniforms, which
foreshadowed the use of dog tags in future wars. Other rituals that began to form around this time
were the use of black crape mourning dresses, which is where the tradition of wearing black to
funerals began, and the practice of embalming bodies to better preserve them until they were in the
possessions of their families, which gave birth to the modern funeral

What Role Should Management Have Within A Business...
What role should management have within a business regarding social responsibility? Explain.
According to Friedman, a manager s only responsibility is to the shareholders, and not society as
a whole (Jennings, 111). We all agree that a manager s primary responsibility is to the company
and the shareholders. We feel that the manager s role is to act as an agent to conduct business in
congruence with the goals set by the shareholders and laws of society, effectively making profit for
the company.
What are the different social responsibilities of a business? Can a business abide by all social
responsibilities at the same time? Explain.
Our consensus on the social responsibilities of a business include responsibilities to the
environment, the community, customers, shareholders, and employees. Such responsibilities
would include, creating new wealth, and new jobs according to Michael Novak. (Jennings) We
all felt that although it may be possible for a business to abide by all of these responsibilities at
the same time, it is highly unlikely due to conflicts between the social responsibilities. For
example, in order to make profit and charge their customers less, the business may not always be
able to ensure perfect performance in regards to environmental responsibility.
Define Sustainability.
We all had similar definitions for sustainability, but the best description is that sustainability is the
management and coordination of environmental, social and financial demands

by discussing how the audience has the capability to create more change, justice, and opportunity
in America. Stevenson spoke about the 5 things required in order to be able to make more
change for the better. The first thing that we must be able to do is that we have to be concerned
about our identity. We can call ourselves students and lawyers, however, it doesn t describe who

The Role Of Yu s Myth In Ancient Chinese Culture
Besides the monarchy politics revealed by the story of Yu, the myth also shows what marriages
are like in the early ancient Chinese society. After Yu had toiled for thirty years he had reached
the age when, according to Confucian tradition, it was proper to take a wife. (p88 Christie,
Anthony) Yu met his wife by following a prophecy that lead to sovereignty. Yu s wife Nu chiao
turned into a stone when she is pregnant. After nine months of transformation a boy Chhi was
born. Unlike Chinese feudal tradition after Qin dynasty, a man as great as Yu only has one wife
and one child. It shows that monogamy is the dominant culture during Yu s time. When Yu was
looking for a wife, he approached the village of Thu Shan and saw a white fox with nine tails
appear. This symbolized that to marry the girl of Thu Shan means to obtain a flourishing lineage.
He walked into the village and found a girl whose name is Nu chiao waiting for him. They were

The Benefits Of Computer Technology In Healthcare
Over the years, computer technology and the internet has made a drastic change around the world
for healthcare industry. The healthcare industry is continuing to give positive changes for patients
and employees thanks to computer technology. It has made it easier and more productive for
patients and employees. Now patients can feel more at ease during their doctor s visit because of
the benefits of technology.
In the first place, computer technology have made it more efficient for physicians. Now physicians
can work up patients faster, thanks to the computer programs that is provided for them. In order to
aid clinical decision making, it is important that data is collected and presented to the doctor as
quickly as possible; electronic systems are therefore advantageous in performing these tasks.
(Tettegah 7) The software applications that the hospital provides help physicians put in the orders so
their patients can get faster treatment. For example, the physician can order their patient to get an x
ray when they are in leg pain. Once the x ray is ordered the technician does the x ray and the
physician can look at the results in their computer so they can properly diagnosis and give them
the proper treatment. The programs can also help keep a log of patients previous visits so they can
know the proper medication to give to patients. The number one benefit cited by the developers is
the patient focused benefit of reducing medication errors and preventing allergic

Adults have been alive for a substantial time longer than the children around them. With this age
comes maturity, the ability to make their own decisions, and having been able to experience life
much more than a sick child likely has. Being diagnosed with a terminal illness then, if not
devastating enough, raises the bar even higher, since one will be painfully aware of how the life
they once knew will be taken from them slowly each day. Eventually, there may be nothing to
look forward to as this disease robs them of who they once were. It is unjust to allow these adults
to become nostalgics of their past life as they suffer through their new one, therefore assisted
suicide should be offered to the patients with terminal and incurable illnesses who are 16 and
older. David Swanton, an author who advocates the right to be able to die with dignity quotes a
man who recently went to battle over his right to euthanasia, he states, Over himself, over his
own body and mind, the individual is sovereign . To deny a person the right to live his or her life
as he or she wishes implies that each individual does not know what is right for himself or herself.

Do they lounge around and become human vegetables that a family will need to take care of with
not only basic needs but also hospital bills? Is the ability the patient

Is Beauty In The Eye Of The Beholder
Imagine you are walking through the woods on a sunny fall day, during this walk there are many
things that might bring you pleasure. Along the way you might hear a bird singing, feel a rock as
you hike a path, taste cold water to replenish your thirst, and see many beautiful sights. The person
you are walking with may have a total different experience and sensethings that bring pleasure to
them that may not to you. There is an old adage that says Beauty is in the eyeof the beholder. This
adage can be debated time and time again. The first things to look at is the definitions of beauty
and beholder. The dictionary defines beauty is a combination of qualities that pleases the
aesthetic senses ( Beauty ). It doesn t say beauty has to be seen by the eye. Beauty can be
combination of our five senses. It can be anything we can see, touch, taste, feel, or smell. The
definition of beholder is a person who observes a sense. The adage Beauty is in the eye of the
beholder by definition means that each person sees beauty and can find beauty in different things
through their senses ( Beholder ). It creates a very subjective approach to beauty. The adage is
true because each person is an individual and has different perspectives and way of sensing. The
idea that what pleases one person may not please another is true along this case because not
everybody has the same preference to beauty. Beauty is subjective and can be seen through
personal experience and should give society a

Darwinian evolution is the theory that life after appearance and over time endured mutation and
adaptation through natural selection to eventually yield modern man from the same source, a single
cell. ID is the theory that life exists in its present forms as the product of a purposeful design. Both
theories use natural science to support their ideological conclusions such as embryology, genetics,
and biochemistry. A key to these theories being comparable is that they both suggest that a
preexisting being sparked life on Earth. Within evolution this point is highly debated and denied by
many, however the father of evolution, Charles Darwin, expressed in the Origin of Species his
belief that the first cell received its spark of life by the Creator. (Darwin 1900, 316) This will
soon be important as a reason why evolution should not be taught in public education at all if you
believe that the first amendment means a separation between church and state as evolution at its
roots tells us that God created life on earth. ID at its roots also asserts that an entity also lit the
initial sparks of life on earth. A core difference between the premises of these two theories is found
in their assertions of the identity of this being and will be analyzed next. In contrast, these theories
are substantially different. Darwinian evolution assumes that after the emergence of the first living
cell eons passed as that cell self replicated and began the

1.Introduction
1.1.Use of biomass in Sub Saharan Africa
Biomass (charcoal and firewood) is the major energy source in southern Africa, particularly in
rural areas. Most households rely on biomass energy for cooking and space heating. This
exhaustive use of biomass cause several health and environmental related threats. This heavy
reliance on biomass exerts pressure on forests and trees which eventually leads to extensive
deforestation and as well as soil erosion. Furthermore, the traditional cooking on open fire leads
to severe problems of indoor air pollution and its associated health hazards. It is estimated that
about 3% of the global burden of diseases is caused by wood smoke resulting in 1.6 million
premature deaths every year including 900 children under five (Malinski, 2008; Warwick and
Doig, 2004; WHO, 2002).
One of the factors that results in high demand for fuelwood is its low combustion efficiency
(Muneer and Mohamed, 2003). The development and distribution of energy efficient cooking
technology such as improved biomass cooking stoves (ICS) is considered as one of the best
technically possible, socially reliable, and economically viable interventions available that can help
to maintain low demand for fuelwood to reduce pressure on forest reserves (Arnold et

Billy Budd, And The Fiery Bucephalus
Melville describes Billy in a sexual manner within the first few pages, introducing the sexual
language almost immediately. He is the handsome sailor compared to the young Alexander and
the fiery Bucephalus (Melville 6). Further down the same page he is described as, always
attractive in masculine conjunction and goes under the nickname Baby Budd (Melville 6). There
is immediately a sense of sexual attraction attached to the title character. He is described in sexual
terms and presented as a prime physical example of a man. Inciting feelings of attraction and a
sense of tranquility within the men around him, the reader is shown right away that this is natural
when it comes to Billy Budd. Additionally, due to the fact that the feelings Billy Budd incites in
people are introduced within the first few pages of the novella, the reader feels that it is a natural
part of the story throughout it. The description of Budd s attraction continues from chapter one, into
chapter two. His physical attractivenessis exhaustedly described and it works to allow the reader
to see just how easy it is to fall for the handsome sailor. He is compared to the Hercules of Greek
mythology, a handsome and shapely figure, and to Biblical Adam. The novella reads, Budd, In
aspect looked even younger than he really was, owing to a lingering adolescent expression in the as
yet smooth face all but feminine in purity of natural complexion but where, thanks to seagoing, the

Gender, Race, And Class
In the All New Volvo XC90 commercial the first words to appear on the screen is What is
Luxury? In this commercial it appears that luxury can only be afforded by primarily white, rich
males. The media in the United States has made a lot of progress towards showing gender and
racial equality on TV but America still has a long way to go. As of 2015 white men still have a
patriarchal ranking in media compared to women and minorities. This essay will be discussing how
intersectionality, such as gender, race, and class, play a key part in gender roles in TV media today.
Luxury is the main focus in Volvo CarsUS commercial for their new Volvo XC90; but what does
luxury mean? According to Merriam Webster Online, the definition of luxury is something that
is expensive and not necessary ( Luxury ). But according to the All New Volvo XC90

something expensive, they come from how an individual feels about oneself. In the commercial it
shows a white man driving and navigating the touch screen GPS system while a white woman sits
in the passenger seat and smiles at the man. The video goes on to show the interior and exterior of
the car itself. Towards the end, the car is shown driving through a fancy,

This machine revolutionized chocolate making for the rest of history. The cocoa press cleverly
worked to squeeze the cocoa butter from roasted cocoa beans, leaving behind dry clumps which
could then be pulverized into a fine powder. The fine powder could be mixed with liquids and
other ingredients and poured into molds, then solidified into the chocolate we have today. This
invention by van Houten brought in the modern era of chocolate by enabling it to be used as a
confectionery and baking ingredient. This resulted in chocolate having a hefty price drop so it

Fodo Baggins Archetypes
One of the most important archetypes is the hero. Without the hero, there is no story to be told.
Heroes can be found in every story and many times if you analyze the story you will find that
there is more than one hero. In The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, there are
multiple heroes. The obvious herowould be Frodo Baggins, because he is the main characterand he
has the undertaking of destroying Sauron s ring, but there are others as well. Two others that
stood out immensely are; Gandalf The Grey and Aragorn (The Strider). They all performed many
courageous and brave actions to save their fellowship. Frodo, Gandalf and Aragorn all take part in
destroying the ring that rules all, to restore order.
Frodo Baggins was who the ring was passed onto. The one who was called upon to be the one to
obliterate the ring from existence. Events that took place throughout the major motion picture The
Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, made it very distinct that Frodo is the hero.
When the ring is brought to Rivendell, an argument develops that concerns who will take the ring
to Mordor to destroy it. Many people volunteered to take on this task but, none are accepted

Selective Exposition in The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson
Usually when someone hears the word lottery the first thing that comes to mind is a large sum of
cash that people compete against highly impractical odds to win. Shirley Jackson s story The
Lottery might imply a similar conception based on the title alone, but the story is filled with
unknowns never revealing exactly when and where the story takes place, or why the lotteryexists;
even what the lottery is isn t revealed until the very end. Yet despite Jackson s omission of details
in The Lottery, she manages to create an overtone of mystery that compels the reader to grasp the
world of the story rather than define it in terms of the physical world and form their own opinions.
Often in stories, setting is a key element, and that the more ... Show more content on

Minimalism, being the virtual heart of his style, Carver s stories sometime seem like they lack
motivation. Charles May writes that Carver s story Gazebo is specifically about how pointless
explanation actually is (42). Jackson s story mimics Carver s style a great deal, as very little is
revealed throughout the story, but for a good reason. If Jackson did explain everything about the
world of The Lottery, the reader would be too ensconced with reality while reading the story.
May writes that critic Walter Benjamin surmised that What story does is to show us how to deal
with all that we cannot understand; it is half the art of storytelling to be free from information.
Because the reader of the story is permitted to interpret things, story has an amplitude lacking in
information (41). Jackson s story is not meant to take place in a world that the reader can live in,
just one that the reader can believe is possible, and because the world is shrouded in mystery rather
than exposition, the reader is free to form their own opinions.
A shocking tale of murder in a virtually civilized town, The Lottery remains mysterious to the
end. The reader is blissfully unaware of a majority of details, causing the revelation of what the
lottery is to be all the more shocking. By using this selective exposition, Jackson effectively creates
a mystery in which the reader is free to

Examples Of Romanticism In The Great Gatsby
The book of The Great Gatsby, by author F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a story that has two parts in the
philosophy of the characters way of living. There is the type of character that opposes the other
one in a certain way. There are many types of philosophies in the characters, but the philosophies of
Romanticism and Realism are represented many times in The Great Gatsby. Although they never
specifically mention it, several characters in Great Gatsby experience signs of a Romanticist
philosophy.
Romanticism is defined as a literary, artistic, and philosophical movement characterized chiefly by a
reaction against neoclassicism and an emphasis on the imagination and emotions, and marked
especially in English literature by sensibility and the use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In pg 76, the philosophy of Romanticism can be inferred from her reaction after reading the
letter and getting as drunk as a monkey the night before her wedding, leaving her in a state of
confusion and anguish. This leaves her deciding in what to do, which then she marries Tom.
Eventually, she regrets taking this decision after having the choice of having either one. Another
example of Romanticism represented by her, is when she cries after Gatsby shows his variety of
shirts in pg. 92. Again, Daisy falls into Gatsby s trap of him trying to impress her with his
wealth. After 5 years lost, she begins to regret marrying Tom, and wishing she had spent that
time with Gatsby, which was impossible to do, caused by Gatsby s time in war and studies in
Oxford. This reunion in Gatsby s mansion, makes both of them fantasize that they are together
and makes them believe that there is still hope to live together happily as a couple. From here,
they begin to have affairs and this makes the romance and belief stronger, which then leads to
Gatsby accepting to face the problem: Tom. He believes that things must be done the respectful
way by talking to him like adults, but Daisy opposes that idea. Here, Daisy shows Romanticism
again, while Gatsby is being realistic. Unfortunately, the confrontation between the love triangle
leads to Gatsby s assassination after Myrtle, Tom s mistress and George Wilson s wife, is hit by
Gatsby s yellow car that Daisy was

What Was The Purpose Of Mansa Musa Dbq
What was the purpose of Mansa Musa s hajj? The ancient kingdom of Mali was located in West
Africa, and Mansa Musa ruled there from 1312 1337. Mansa Musa was an intelligent ruler. In
order to organize and protect his empire, he divided the empire into provinces that had a governor,
and maintained a large army to ensure safety. The purpose of the hajj was that, ...Mecca was an
important duty of Islam, (Background). For the hajj, Mansa Musa had to make two crossings of
the Sahara, which was very large and dry. Mansa Musa s hajj was motivated to some extent by
religion, but also by secular reasons such as social motives and most importantly economic
purposes. Being one of the five pillars of Islam, the hajj is something that is religious, and... Show

Document A shows that Mansa Musa brought approximately 24,000 pounds of gold and
musicians, royal guard, flag bearers, doctors, and teachers in caravans. A reason why Mansa
Musa brought many different types of people with him is because he traveled a large section of
land, bringing people with different specialties could have given him an advantage when he
visited different types of land. He could show different areas how great his city was and services
could have been given in return for Mansa Musa s crew. To add on, Document B shows the trade
route that Mansa Musa most likely took on his journey. When looked at, it intersects many trade
routes. At the intersection he could have traded goods that his kingdom could not obtain, which
is good for his kingdom s economy. Using the gold that he had, if he did not have any goods left,
he could have given gold in return. Likewise, Mansa Musa followed existing trade routes, so he
knew that the trade route existed and chose to take it. Past kings could have came back with
special goods and made Mali grow, which is something that he would have wanted to gain
power. Correspondingly, in Document E, Al Umari states, ...This has been the state of affairs for
about twelve years until this day by reason of the large amount of gold which they brought into
Egypt and spent there. Al Umari was talking about Egypt, and Egypt was where Mansa Musa
crossed on the way to Mecca. Mansa Musa spent most of his gold, left many gifts, and people
made many profits out of him. This shows another reason why Mansa Musa brought much gold.
He most likely wanted to help Egyptians and show Egyptians that he is the best and whenever he
visits again or needs help; Egyptians should come and get him. The economic benefit of this would
be that when the Egyptians would come with anything that Mansa Musa needs, Egyptians would
see Mansa Musa s kingdom and initiate trade to help the

Dutch And Nigerian Weddings Essay
Over the last couple of weeks I have been studying the subject of Dutch and Nigerian weddings. I
looked at photographs, a short movie and websites on the topic. I also interviewed some Dutch
people that used to live in Nigeria. I have come the conclusion that Dutch and Nigerian weddings
are very different although there might be some similarities. In the paragraphs below I will
elaborate on the similarities and differences.
To start off with, engagement is crucial for a weddingto happen and the first step you take toward
getting married. Traditionally in the Netherlands you propose which means to get down on one

In Dutch weddings it is traditional that both parties share the price evenly. While in Nigeria it is
normal for the wedding to be paid by both families together except for the introduction. The
introduction is an informal meeting of both families. This is different because in the
Netherlands the families would already be very familiar with each other. This is because in the
Netherlands the soon to be married would already be with each other for a long time in which the
families meet. In Nigeria the bride pays for the introduction and the groom can help out with the
cost if he wants to. In the Netherlands the cost is usually pretty much always shared equally. In
Nigeria there is also a tradition of showering the bride in money for good luck. This only happens
in Nigeria and not in the Netherlands in any way. In Nigeria people tend to give money as a gift but
in the Netherlands they usually give presents. (The movie: The Mother of George, the article:

One of the most impactful inventions was the development of the telegram. The first telegram was
sent in May 24th, 1844 from the U.S. Capital to Baltimore. This telegram was sent by Samuel F.B.
Morse and the message said What hath God wrought? The significance of the telegraph is that it
completely branches out new possibilities for communication. For the most part, there was only the
existence of local businesses because distance was a problem. However, the telegraph would allow
for larger businesses to strive because of the now long distance communication. This alone greatly
progresses the industrial industry because products could now be ordered from long distances and
communications could be made between buildings farther away under the same company. This
gave rise to the interstate companies that years later would evolve into international companies. In
addition to this, the telegram gave the U.S. an advantage in combat that other countries did not yet
have access to. This made communication fast and efficient in the heat of battle, which made the
U.S. a more powerful player. Moreover, the invention of the telegraph helped lean the American

  • 2. Applying A Thin Bonded Concrete Overlay individual repairs, consider using a thin bonded concrete overlay. Fig 26: Popouts, Scaling and Spalling. 2.11 SCALING Scaling is the general loss of surface mortar exposed to freezing and thawing. The aggregate is usually clearly exposed and often stands out from the concrete. 2.11.1 Causes 1.Scaling is primarily a physical action caused by hydraulic pressure from water freezing within the concrete and not usually caused by chemical corrosive action. 2. When pressure exceeds the tensile strength of concrete, scaling can result if entrained air voids are not present to act as internal pressure relief valves. 3. Scaling is also caused due to the use of deicing solutions. Fig 27: Scaling of Concrete Surface 2.11.2 Remedies Begin by thoroughly removing any loose material to create a relatively smooth surface. Contact the repair material manufacturer for guidance. Most manufacturers suggest surface preparation should include repairing shallow delaminations, surface, scaling, and aggregate popouts. This may require grinding the resulting rough surface. The committee recommends trying to achieve a concrete surface profile in the range of 3 to 5 as described in the International Concrete Repairs Institute s Document 03732. This is often the best range for applying most liquid applied membranes and most thin coatings. Most liquid applied products are not intended to level off or hide imperfections, although trowel grade materials can sometimes be used for this purpose. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Progressive Education Essay John Keating, a student at Welton Academy inspired his fellow classmates, to meet in caves and read challenging poetry of the past, not with flashcards, but with these words, Now, my class, you will learn to think for yourselves again. You will learn to savor words and language. No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world. Typically, students do not hear enough of this type of passion in a traditional classroom. However, a progressive classroom, be it a cave or college can inspire students to memorize facts, not because they have to, but rather because they want to for the betterment of humanity. Society desperately needs students educated in a progressive style because America needs students who realize... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Educational philosopher, Marie Montessori was a strong advocate for such learning, particularly for children under age three who have a strong interest in learning through the use of movement and verbal play (So what s Montessori and Piaget?). John Dewey, another educational philosopher believed Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is, not a preparation for life; education is life itself. (Inc.) He felt that learning took place only when students had internalized what they had gained through experience and practiced it in their own lives. In a progressive classroom, the teacher designs experiences for students with the idea that through experience, students build knowledge and skills. A society of individuals conforming to studying flashcards may be good, but a society of literate individuals consciously aware of why and how the facts on the flashcards and in mass media can solve new problems is better. A progressive classroom looks different, and a progressive teacher inspires unique thinking in individual students differently, as well. Instead of being strict with a set curriculum and specific subject to cover, teachers find their students present interests, abilities, and needs. • 4. The Trials And Tribulations Of Racism The most important theme in this book was the trials and tribulations of racism because it was woven in every part of the plot, it contributed to the conflict and resolutions, and gave the story a connection to current events, helping the reader s comprehension. Each twist and turn of the story had hints of association with the struggles of racism. From the trial in court to the discovery of the body to the flashbacks of back stories of the characters, this theme was delicately integrated. In Kabuo Miyamoto s situation, the court was harsh on his case, and he couldn t get himself a very good lawyer, as no one would offer to defend the enemy . They were quick to jump to conclusions. He got hit pretty hard with something fairly flat, Art. Puts me in mind of a type of gun butt wound I saw a few times in the war. One of those kendo strikes the Japs used. Also, even though the Japanese are a main part of the story, they were portrayed as isolated and reclusive. They were very cold to other people, a result of a mindset of superiority. As they only associated with others of their race, they were untrusting and distant from others. Kabuo didn t even trust the lawyer who was to keep him out of prison. As the book switches time frames, there were subtle or evident signs of challenges of racial tension everywhere. You could see how this theme had effects on everything in a slightly different manner, depending on the situation. Many of the conflicts in the book were based off ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Canine Hip Dysplasia This study was designed to determine the genetic correlations between canine hip dysplasia (CHD) and canine elbow dysplasia (CED) in German shepherds. The study was extended to the genetic correlation of the dogs diagnosed as borderline for both hip and elbow dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is abnormal formation of the hip socket causing a painful arthritis in the joints; it is a polygenic trait affected by environmental factors. Elbow dysplasia is caused by abnormal growth of cells, vague tissue, or bone resulting in elbow pain. Materials used were radiographic examination data taken from the German breeding association for German Shepherd dogs (GSD). These examinations recorded of hip joints associated with CHD and elbow joints associated with CED.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This study was done with 843 German shepherd dogs, because German shepherds are the largest purebred dog population in Europe with an estimated 35% prevalence for CHD (large number for phenotypic and genetic variance). Within the total of 843 German shepherds only 405 were males and 438 were females. The control was the birth season; only dogs born between 2000 2005 were included in this study. In the study, they used radiographs, CHD scores, and EDTA blood samples for all the dogs from the official guidelines of the Federation Cynologique International (FCI). CHD scores were scaled by CHD A being normal hip joints, CHD C having slight signs of CHD, CHD D with moderate signs, and CHD E had severe signs of CHD. Only 277 out of 843 were CHD A classified as unaffected and 557 were CHD C, CHD D, or CHD E classified as affected for the purpose of this study. Various techniques were used in this study to find the SNPs associated with CHD like PCR products, NucleoSpin Kit 96, PTC and , DYEnamic ET Terminator Cycle Sequencing Kit,, and many more. A GeneMapper was used to evaluate the data of the study. As they studied 37 SNPs in 95 CHD cases, those SNPs were located in 13 dog chromosomes (CFA1, 3, 4, 8, 9, 16, 19, 26, 29, 32, 33, 34, and 35); ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Characteristics Of Effective Leadership Styles Characteristics of Effective Leadership Styles Presented to Perry Barton, Instructor MGMT 1115 Leadership By William Allen June 21, 2015 What are the effective leadership styles? More importantly what are the characteristics of these styles. This paper will discuss in detail three topics and how they relate to effective leadership styles. We will start by evaluating business situations to determine whether the leadership style is participative, autocratic, leadership grid based or entrepreneurial. Next we will compare and contrast the leadership styles in various situations based upon the leadership differences by gender. Lastly, we will decide the best leadership style for specific situations. Different business situations require specific leadership styles. These leadership styles include participative, autocratic, leadership grid based and entrepreneurial. The Participative leadership style is characterized by a leader who turns to the team for input, ideas, and observations instead of making all decisions on their own. The leader recognizes that the team has skills and ideas that could benefit the decision making process. Participative leadership requires the whole team to be involved. Benefits of this style of leadership includes having subordinates feeling empowered and important. Its also able to give different strategies and decisions from perspectives of other people which can benefit decision making in that the decision in not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Philip K. Dick s Influence On His Writings Philip K. Dick an American author, most renowned for his works in science fiction, played a crucial role in the development of the science fiction media industry today. His inspiration while writing novels was unconventional, and ranged from visitations of a pink beam named 2 3 74, to a special insight of a force outside of our universe which he referred to as Zebra. Philip K. Dick had many influences on his writings such as drug use, Paranoid Personality Disorder, and Schizophrenia. Dick s life left a massive impact on his writings and, throughout his novels, readers are able to observe recurring apocalyptic like settings and the common theme of a totalitarian government, which, together, create insightful social commentaries. Philip K. Dick had several mental illnesses which had heavily influenced his writing. He often reported recurring hallucinations of a pink beam along with other shapes and geometric patterns, as well as claiming that he was living as a persecuted Christian in Rome named Thomas during the first century AD (Aaronson). In addition to his mental illnesses, he had a history of drug use as well as a struggle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It wasn t until around the 1950s to 60s where he went through a really significant creative period (Fisher). Dick claimed to have contact with a force outside of Earth, called Zebra, which sparked his creativity. Dick s claim of having contact with an outside force was likely due to one of his several mental illnesses; however it did give him the motivation he needed to continue writing. • 9. Conversions of Alcohols to Alkyl Halides Conversions of Alcohols to Alkyl Halides: 1 Propanol and 2 Pentanol Introduction One way scientist gets alkyl halides is by using the manipulation of an alcohol. When alcohols are treated with HBr or HCl; they can undergo a nucleophile substation reaction to generate an alkyl halide and water2. Using the structure of the alcohols they are able to use SN1 or SN2 mechanisms. For both these mechanisms though, the OH group must be pronated shown in Figure 1. R OH + H Br+ R OH2 +Br Figure 1. This figure is the protonation of the OH group from the alcohol SN1 is a limiting mechanism that is a unimolecular nucleophic substation reaction. In this mechanism it involves two steps, one in which the leaving group leaves and then forms a carbocation intermediate, shown in figure 2. Then it is able to break bonds between carbon and making it able for carbon to leave the group before the bond forming with nucleophile begins1. R OH2R+ + H2O Br Figure 2.In this figure it shows the cation intermediate that is forming and the attack of Br resulting in the production of RBr While the mechanisms for SN2 is a biomolecular reaction. These two species are involved in the rate determine step3. Once the nucleophile attacks, though it is allowed to form a nucleophile, that then forms a transition state and then results in the final product, as shown in Figure 3. + R OH2 RBr +H2O Br Figure 3. • 10. Holmes Is Not A Successful Leader Theranos Chairman, CEO, and Founder Elizabeth Holmes is a successful leader; However, Holmes is not a successful manager. On a leadership basis Elizabeth Holmes has established a vision for Theranos and has assembled many others to follow that vision, Holmes embraces change making Theranos more efficient and effective, and Holmes is always looking ahead in order to make sure Theranos stays innovative and goal oriented. On a managerial spectrum, Holmes fails to set precise standards, does not follow the controlling function of management, and ignores planning and decision making necessary to the long term survival of Theranos. Leaders must communicate a vision and rally others around that vision. (Nickels, p. 196) Elizabeth Holmes has repeatedly stated envisions about a world in which no one ever has to say goodbye too soon. (Stewart, 2015) Holmes vision has carried over to the company s mission statement. Our mission is to make actionable information accessible to everyone at the time it matters. A Christian hero is someone who displays qualities of a regular herobut has qualities that are similar to characteristics of Jesus Christ. Jesus was a man who was humble, courageous, and a man who helped others. The first occasion is when Beowulf goes to visit King Hrothgar and the king begs him to help and to fight Grendel for him and his kingdom (Beowulf, 455 458). The second occasion is when King Hrothgar beseeched Beowulf to go and battle Grendel s mother (Beowulf, 2131). The third occasion is when King Hygelac is killed and his wife wants Beowulf to take over as king because she believes that her son is too young to lead and protect the kingdom. But instead Beowulf honors, guides and provides support for the prince (Beowulf, 2365 2378). In contrast, Dante the Pilgrim does not help others. Yes, he is seen as a character who pities the sinners at first but he does not help them. Instead, he wants to know their names and stories so he can put it into his notes (Inferno, XXXII). Crime and Punishment Essay examples Crime and Punishment In his book Crime and Punishment , Dostoevsky explores the path of Raskolnikov who has many problems and obstacles throughout his life. He commits murder and is faced with the long and mentally extremely painful journey of seeking redemption. Raskolnikov believes that by a law of nature men have been somewhat arbitrarily divided into two groups of ordinary and extraordinary . Raskolnikov believes that the duty of the ordinary group is to just exist, in order to form the world and the society. The second group, those who are extraordinary , are a step above the normal. This gave him a rush that made him feel invincible. He believed that this would prove if he was truly super . Once he realized that he wasn t part of this class, he suffered a mental breakdown. Raskolnikov s suffering has a direct relationship with his guilt over his crimes. It is also due to his recognition of his failure to meet his theory. However another controlling idea behind his punishment is a result of his dual personality and his obsession to prove his theory. He is best represented as being either cold, intellectual and isolated from society, or as being warm and compassionate. The murder is the result of his intellectual side, trying to determine whether or not he fits his extraordinary man theory. It was this side of his personality that develops the crime and carries out his plan, forcing the humane side to suffer for his actions. Both Raskolnikov and Svidrigailov are headed down the same path throughout the novel. They share the same goal of redemption. Arguments In Favor Of Animal Testing Hannah Bjorklund Mr. Wills English 10 2 February 2016 Animal Testing Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures... (Einstein). Every year, an immense number of animals are unwillingly subjected to testing in laboratories across the United States. If action is not taken, millions of lab animals will continue to die and suffer not only in America, but universally. Animal testing stems all the way back to the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Arabs, and has since then expanded into a global issue (Scutti). For example, the discovery of the polio vaccine reduced global instances of the disease from 350 thousand cases in 1988 to 223 in 2012 ( Should ). Considering over 371 million people worldwide have diabetes (Castillo), the invention of insulin has saved countless lives since its discovery. Animal testing has also offered a better understanding of conditions such as tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, many types of cancer like leukemia and breast cancer, and countless other diseases ( Should ). Not only does animal research yield lifesaving medical treatments and advancements, the animals involved are protected by various laws and regulations. The most prominent of these laws is the Animal Welfare Act, or AWA, which has been in effect since 1966. Not only does the AWA regulate the types of animals tested on, it also requires minimum housing standards for the research animals. For instance, all lab animals must be provided with a suitable enclosure size, fresh food and water, and a comfortable habitat temperature ( Should ). Furthermore, all persons requesting to use animals for experimentation must have their request approved by their facility s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, or IACUC. All facilities are also required to employ veterinarians, animal care specialists, and animal health technicians to best insure considerate treatment of the lab animals ( Should ). While living in poor conditions is mainly bad for the animals, it also affects the results of the experiments themselves. Neglected animals produce inaccurate test results, due to many of their characteristics only being observable if they are contented, meaning humane treatment of lab animals is better for the researchers as ... Nixon states that no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. (Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, 44 Fed. Reg. at 71413). Since this law was enacted we have seen a dramatic increase in female sports participation. Tile IX has had a positive impact on female athletes as females now make up over 40% of college athletes... compared to two percent before the time of the legislation (Staurowsky Weight, 2001, Pg. 190). Although Title IX has increased participation of female athletes it has not aided in achieving equality for women and girls in sports. I believe the barriers that prevent equality for female athletes can be broken down into two categories media coverage, and public perception. The media has majority control over what the public believes is important and most recently female athletes received 1.6% of television coverage, 4.9% of magazine covers, and only 9.7% of featured sports articles (Fink, 2015). Not only do female athletes not get enough media coverage, but when they do the focus is often on their physical appearance, femininity, and / or heterosexuality (Fink, 2015, Pg. 331). This coverage creates a negative public perception toward female athletes. Thus the public believes that sports ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One crucial significance about this war was that it was fought amongst Americans rather than against a foreign foe. While many focus on the causes of the civil war, there were advances made possible, as a result of war, which should be brought into light. The American civil warcreated new jobs for women, brought about cultural rituals that are the norm of society today, and made westward expansion possible. As men went off to war, women had to find ways to provide for their families until the return of their men. Women took over farm tasks, filled jobs at schools and offices, worked in factories, and even became nurses to make wages. Women even became spies and scouts to aid in the war effort. This new found independence would eventually push women to question their submissive roles and begin fighting for their equal rights. According to Friedman, a manager s only responsibility is to the shareholders, and not society as a whole (Jennings, 111). We all agree that a manager s primary responsibility is to the company and the shareholders. We feel that the manager s role is to act as an agent to conduct business in congruence with the goals set by the shareholders and laws of society, effectively making profit for the company. What are the different social responsibilities of a business? Can a business abide by all social responsibilities at the same time? Explain. Our consensus on the social responsibilities of a business include responsibilities to the environment, the community, customers, shareholders, and employees. Such responsibilities would include, creating new wealth, and new jobs according to Michael Novak. • 34. The Role Of Yu s Myth In Ancient Chinese Culture Besides the monarchy politics revealed by the story of Yu, the myth also shows what marriages are like in the early ancient Chinese society. After Yu had toiled for thirty years he had reached the age when, according to Confucian tradition, it was proper to take a wife. (p88 Christie, Anthony) Yu met his wife by following a prophecy that lead to sovereignty. Yu s wife Nu chiao turned into a stone when she is pregnant. After nine months of transformation a boy Chhi was born. Unlike Chinese feudal tradition after Qin dynasty, a man as great as Yu only has one wife and one child. It shows that monogamy is the dominant culture during Yu s time. When Yu was looking for a wife, he approached the village of Thu Shan and saw a white fox with nine tails appear. This symbolized that to marry the girl of Thu Shan means to obtain a flourishing lineage. He walked into the village and found a girl whose name is Nu chiao waiting for him. They were married and... With this age comes maturity, the ability to make their own decisions, and having been able to experience life much more than a sick child likely has. Being diagnosed with a terminal illness then, if not devastating enough, raises the bar even higher, since one will be painfully aware of how the life they once knew will be taken from them slowly each day. Eventually, there may be nothing to look forward to as this disease robs them of who they once were. It is unjust to allow these adults to become nostalgics of their past life as they suffer through their new one, therefore assisted suicide should be offered to the patients with terminal and incurable illnesses who are 16 and older. The person you are walking with may have a total different experience and sensethings that bring pleasure to them that may not to you. There is an old adage that says Beauty is in the eyeof the beholder. This adage can be debated time and time again. The first things to look at is the definitions of beauty and beholder. The dictionary defines beauty is a combination of qualities that pleases the aesthetic senses ( Beauty ). It doesn t say beauty has to be seen by the eye. Beauty can be combination of our five senses. It can be anything we can see, touch, taste, feel, or smell. The definition of beholder is a person who observes a sense. The adage Beauty is in the eye of the beholder by definition means that each person sees beauty and can find beauty in different things through their senses ( Beholder ). It creates a very subjective approach to beauty. The adage is true because each person is an individual and has different perspectives and way of sensing. The idea that what pleases one person may not please another is true along this case because not everybody has the same preference to beauty. Darwinian evolution is the theory that life after appearance and over time endured mutation and adaptation through natural selection to eventually yield modern man from the same source, a single cell. ID is the theory that life exists in its present forms as the product of a purposeful design. Both theories use natural science to support their ideological conclusions such as embryology, genetics, and biochemistry. A key to these theories being comparable is that they both suggest that a preexisting being sparked life on Earth. Within evolution this point is highly debated and denied by many, however the father of evolution, Charles Darwin, expressed in the Origin of Species his belief that the first cell received its spark of life by the Creator. (Darwin 1900, 316) This will soon be important as a reason why evolution should not be taught in public education at all if you believe that the first amendment means a separation between church and state as evolution at its roots tells us that God created life on earth. ID at its roots also asserts that an entity also lit the initial sparks of life on earth. A core difference between the premises of these two theories is found in their assertions of the identity of this being and will be analyzed next. In contrast, these theories are substantially different. Darwinian evolution assumes that after the emergence of the first living cell eons passed as that cell self replicated and began the ... Romanticism is defined as a literary, artistic, and philosophical movement characterized chiefly by a reaction against neoclassicism and an emphasis on the imagination and emotions, and marked especially in English literature by sensibility and the use ... In pg 76, the philosophy of Romanticism can be inferred from her reaction after reading the letter and getting as drunk as a monkey the night before her wedding, leaving her in a state of confusion and anguish. This leaves her deciding in what to do, which then she marries Tom. Eventually, she regrets taking this decision after having the choice of having either one. Another example of Romanticism represented by her, is when she cries after Gatsby shows his variety of shirts in pg. 92. Again, Daisy falls into Gatsby s trap of him trying to impress her with his wealth. After 5 years lost, she begins to regret marrying Tom, and wishing she had spent that time with Gatsby, which was impossible to do, caused by Gatsby s time in war and studies in Oxford. This reunion in Gatsby s mansion, makes both of them fantasize that they are together and makes them believe that there is still hope to live together happily as a couple. From here, they begin to have affairs and this makes the romance and belief stronger, which then leads to Gatsby accepting to face the problem: Tom. He believes that things must be done the respectful way by talking to him like adults, but Daisy opposes that idea. Here, Daisy shows Romanticism again, while Gatsby is being realistic. Document A shows that Mansa Musa brought approximately 24,000 pounds of gold and musicians, royal guard, flag bearers, doctors, and teachers in caravans. A reason why Mansa Musa brought many different types of people with him is because he traveled a large section of land, bringing people with different specialties could have given him an advantage when he visited different types of land. He could show different areas how great his city was and services could have been given in return for Mansa Musa s crew. To add on, Document B shows the trade route that Mansa Musa most likely took on his journey. When looked at, it intersects many trade routes. At the intersection he could have traded goods that his kingdom could not obtain, which is good for his kingdom s economy. Using the gold that he had, if he did not have any goods left, he could have given gold in return. Likewise, Mansa Musa followed existing trade routes, so he knew that the trade route existed and chose to take it. Past kings could have came back with special goods and made Mali grow, which is something that he would have wanted to gain power. Correspondingly, in Document E, Al Umari states, ...This has been the state of affairs for about twelve years until this day by reason of the large amount of gold which they brought into Egypt and spent there. Al Umari was talking about Egypt, and Egypt was where Mansa Musa crossed on the way to Mecca. Mansa Musa spent most of his gold, left many gifts, and people made many profits out of him. This shows another reason why Mansa Musa brought much gold. He most likely wanted to help Egyptians and show Egyptians that he is the best and whenever he visits again or needs help; Egyptians should come and get him. The economic benefit of this would be that when the Egyptians would come with anything that Mansa Musa needs, Egyptians would see Mansa Musa s kingdom and initiate trade to help the ... In Dutch weddings it is traditional that both parties share the price evenly. While in Nigeria it is normal for the wedding to be paid by both families together except for the introduction. The introduction is an informal meeting of both families. This is different because in the Netherlands the families would already be very familiar with each other. This is because in the Netherlands the soon to be married would already be with each other for a long time in which the families meet. In Nigeria the bride pays for the introduction and the groom can help out with the cost if he wants to. In the Netherlands the cost is usually pretty much always shared equally. In Nigeria there is also a tradition of showering the bride in money for good luck. This only happens in Nigeria and not in the Netherlands in any way. This telegram was sent by Samuel F.B. Morse and the message said What hath God wrought? The significance of the telegraph is that it completely branches out new possibilities for communication. For the most part, there was only the existence of local businesses because distance was a problem. However, the telegraph would allow for larger businesses to strive because of the now long distance communication.
