Rappaccini s Daughter holds the theme of love at its forefront. The story delineates
the struggles, both internal and external, that Giovanni Guasconti faces when
courting a young woman named Beatrice Rappaccini. Beatrice s love of a plant and
her father s love of science are conflicts that also highlight the theme of love. Along
with these conflicts, Hawthorne uses the theme of love to pose the question of
whether or not love is worth fighting for as well as critiquing a tragic flaw in

The popular movie The Matrix, Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy and Plato
s The Republic have more in common than you would think at quick glance. They all
examine the theory that our world is an illusion and question the connection between
our senses and reality. The clearest similarity between these works is the doubt of the
reality of our world and questioning the reliability of our senses.
Descartes proposes that we are dreaming and everything we experience is just an
illusion. Plato also proposed a similar idea, a hypothetical situation of a cave where
men lay bound up, able only to perceive the shadows of figures on the walls as they
passed by. In the movie The Matrix, a mega computer has taken over the world and
controls humanity s minds in a virtual world. These three works are all asking a
very similar question, is the world we perceive as reality actually real? Is it all just
a dream or an illusion put on by some higher being? Plato, Descartes, and the
makers of The Matrix introduce these scenarios where we are being controlled by
something outside of ourselves that ordains what we perceive to be real.
The difference in these works is not the question that they ask but how they answer
the question. In The Matrix, it portrays a society that has been fooled and taken
over by a computer, while a small group has come together to fight its control, they
realize the world they have known is not reality and have managed to escape Matrix

Shakespeare s, King Lear. These notions are examined through the actions and
realizations of King Lear, himself. Throughout the discourse of this play we view the
portrayal of humans as animals and witness King Lear s mistreatment after he gives
away his power. When doing so he makes clear his view on love and its value, solely
based on the flattery of words.Through nature, King Lear becomes grounded and
recognizes the animalistic behaviors of the rich and the struggles of the poor. This
recognition brings him to an utmost discovery that presents the reality of vicious
humanity and changes the way he views the world. Nature plays the utmost largest

For my second concert report I chose to listen to Michael Warrick s cello recital.
Throughout his last two pieces he was accompanied by pianist. The first concert
that I went to was Kristine Mezines Non Degree Piano Recital. During her
performance she played piano alone on stage the entire session and was only
accompanied by a page turner. These two concerts were vastly different, their tones
and styles were opposites, and clearly the pianoand cello have many differences in
their sound. As far as the basic differences, the stage was organized during the cello
recital where as during the piano recital the stage was cluttered with all sorts of
objects and the curtains were not closed which caused a distraction. The timing on
when to clap was different as well, during the piano recital I knew exactly when a
piece was finished and when to clap. However, during the cello recital I was

This piece had a very majestic tone, although I did find the dynamic a little too
jarring at times. Some of the notes sounded scratchy and unpleasant, perhaps this
was to add a certain bitterness. There were many moments during this performance
that only one instrument was being played while the other artist just sat there, I
found this odd, it was like combining two solos. I did really enjoy when the pianist
would play really loudly and abruptly, until the cello started, then the pianist would
get much quieter. I liked this because it was like a tug and pull between the two,
which kept the piece energetic. This piece also had many runs, on the cello and
piano which at times ran little too long to me, but added moments of predictability

Wolfe and Ceremony by Leslie Silko. In this comparison I will be analyzing how
these author s writing styles portray the character development in Silko s main
character Tayo, and the minor characters which Wolfe documented. In both pieces,
the reader can see that the characters are presented either internal or external
conflicts, and sometimes both, that shape their realities as well as affect the decisions
