My American Dream
On the American Dream test created by the Ford Foundation, I received a 53 out
of 100. I expected a score around here so I was not too shocked but it does still help
me remain grateful for everything that I have been given. This score does seem
extremely accurate because I have been extremely fortunate to have grown up in an
upper class home in one of the safest and affluent neighborhoods in the city of
Chicago. However, I expected my score to be higher than the minimum because I
have worked very hard for my finances. The factors that helped me move up were

Canarium schweinfurthii Engl. (Burseraceae) is a large tropical tree widely
distributed in East, Central, and West Africa. A mature tree reaches a height of 45
57 m with a straight cylindrical bole up to 27 m with a trunk diameters of 1.2 to
1.5 m over a slight buttress root (Mbagwu et al., 2008). The tree is cultivated for its
fruits which are edible and produce oil which is harvested on a large scale in West
Africa. The oil from the resin is also used in perfumery and medicines due to its
lavender like smell. In Uganda, the resin from the tree is usually burnt to produce
incense for ceremonial purposes(Ssegawa and Kasenene, 2007). The stem and bark

The resin of Canarium contains a high percentage of essential oils with known
antioxidant and antifungal properties (Koudou et al., 2005; Obame et al., 2007).
Therefore, we were interested if the essential oil could be used as a protective agent
against termites as well. Furthermore, location and climatic conditions have an effect
on the growth of a tree and its production of resin and essential oils. Therefore we
wanted to establish if the oil from Uganda contains the same components as the oils
obtained from other parts of Africa.
In this study, the chemical composition of the essential oil from the resin of Ugandan
Canarium was determined, and its anti termitic activity was established.
2. Experimental procedures
2.1 Plant materials
The resin of Canarium schweinfurthii was harvested from the bark of a mature tree
in Sango bay and stored in a freezer. Termites used in the assay were Macrotermes
bellicosus as these have been found to be the most destructive to wood and timber.
Termites above the third instar were used.
2.2 Isolation of essential oils
The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation of the resin (50g) for 4 hours.
The oil obtained was dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate and kept in amber
coloured bottles at 4 oC prior to analysis.

25th, 1961. What John Fitzgerald Kennedy is actually saying is that if the world
does not put an end to, then war will end the world and then there will not be
anybody left for the wars to kill. The relationship with this and the two readings is
that it shows how war can bring people who have bonded together apart by tearing

and toys. This ignorance over the inhumane and unjust labour conditions happening
in factories on other sides of the globe is precisely what keeps these horrifying
practices alive. China is home to one of the most enormous and concentrated

In present China, forced and unpaid prison labor is widespread and common.
Characteristics of Chinese sweatshops include overcrowding, lack of sanitary
conditions, no worker breaks, demands to complete a task within a limited period
of time, and a total lack of job security. Government negligence is what allows such
abuses to persist. Some plants force employees into working extraordinary
amounts of hours, for example, a Price Waterhouse audit of Nike factories in China
found that some require seven days of work per week. Many workers who
supposedly have the choice to work overtime must do so in order to survive on their
low wage rates. The people working in Chinese sweatshops only get a small amount
of payment for their work and nothing more. The locals do not benefit at all, but
instead suffer from the presence of foreign businesses in their country. As for the
foreigners, one telling statistic is that the United States imports an estimated $100
million per year in goods produced by Chinese migrant workers. The outside
companies gain millions as the developing countries struggle to survive. Presently,
foreigners gain massively from the resource of migrant workers in China. The locals
