This document summarizes an experimental analysis of partially and fully charged thermal stratified hot water storage tanks. The experiments were conducted to study thermal stratification and degradation of heat in stratified thermocline storage tanks. Temperature stratification, or degradation of heat, in stratified thermocline storage was studied experimentally. Emphasis was given to studying the effects of aspect ratio, mix number, exergy efficiency, and initial temperature difference. Data were taken on fully and partially charged storage tanks, and temperature changes in the axial and radial directions were analyzed. The results showed that heat conduction to the atmosphere through insulation contributes to greater heat loss than conduction across the thermocline in small diameter tanks.
