Mr. Manoj Kumar Yadav of Krishana Institute of Pharmacy and Sciences in Kanpur discusses expectorants. Expectorants are drugs that help remove sputum from the respiratory tract by increasing sputum fluidity or volume to make coughing up mucus easier. Expectorants do not suppress coughing, which is important for removing excess mucus, particles, or microorganisms from the airways. Expectorants also help relieve chest congestion from colds, flu, or allergies. Expectorants are classified as sedative or stimulant. Sedative expectorants work through stomach irritation to stimulate gastric reflexes, while stimulant expectorants directly or indirectly stimulate respiratory tract secretions
