The document provides instructions for students to continue developing a draft story based on expanding small moments from their writer's notebook entries. Students are asked to choose the entry they are most interested in and have the most details for. They then complete a chart with questions to help develop the beginning, middle, end, setting, characters and time frame for their draft story. Next, students are instructed to begin writing sentences for their draft based on the completed chart. Finally, students are asked to record a video of themselves reading their draft so far and attach it to an assignment.

2. NOW IT IS TIME TO CHOOSE
• Take out your writer’s notebook.
• Look at the three entries you expanded upon yesterday.
• Re-read each entry.
• Ask yourself these questions after you re-read
– What piece of writing do I connect with most?
– What piece of writing do I have the most detail in?
– What piece of writing makes me want to keep writing more?
– What piece of writing am I the most interested in?
If you answered the same piece of writing the 3 or more of the questions above, that is the
piece you are going to focus on today. By the end of the day today, you should have one
piece of writing that is expanded on even further in draft form.

4. In your writer’s notebook, I want you to draw this
chart with three sections. Read the questions here
And answer them as you begin to draft your
small moment into a story with a beginning,
middle, end.
You will also begin to create a setting, characters
and time frame.
Remember, this is a draft, so we are just getting
ideas on paper!
We will add more details and clean these pieces
of our draft up next week.

5. AFTER YOUR CHART
IS COMPLETE… LET’S
BEEF IT UP! IT’S
SENTENCE TIME!
After your chart is complete… it is time to begin
writing. Take the chart and use it to help you begin
to add sentences to your writing. We don’t need to
have full fledge paragraphs yet, just the begining of
a writing.

week. In this pre-writing
stage, just focus on trying
to craft a beginning and an
end. Remember, this is just
a start to a draft. It doesn’t
have to be perfect. We are
just getting our thinking
on paper.

• You are going to record yourself reading the draft that you have so far.
• Using the camera on your device, record a video of you reading me the draft of your
writing so far.
• Remember it doesn’t have to be perfect.
• Speak loud and clear into your devices mic and show your draft in your writers
notebook as you record yourself on video.
• Save the video in your ELA folder.
• Attach the video to the assignment below this presentation.
• This is essential to have done before we move on to the next step of the drafting
process.
• Remember to take your time and do your best, this is your own piece of writing and it
is going to be GREAT!
