June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Quantative research- is when you ask specific questions to get the right correct
answer in full detail.
Qualitive research- Is researching which is done through numbers such as pie
charts to show the right amount of data.
Mainstream- are films which are aimed at a wider rangeaudience worldwide
as well as different age ranges. For example, Star Wars is a big huge scale
francizewhich has a huge budget as it is produced by a big studio company
and which has the money to make sureit has a big effect when it reaches the
public specially becausethere are multiple films of them. However, as it’s a
francizethe firststar wars related to a lot of different people and ages so this
allowed to bring in a larger audience by including Lego star wars this will help
make the movies popular and kids will be able to usetoys from the movies.
2. LiamMacdonald
Alternative- are movies which are aimed at smaller audiences and the story is
usually a bit different and unusualfor example suicide squad as its aimed at
people who are interested in batman and dc villains so its drawn to a specific
audience and its very unusual and original.
Niche- Are films which are aimed at a specific audience so for example a film
based on a music artist would be in this category for example nas time is
illmatic is a film based on he’s life of how he became an artist from the hard
streets of queens bridgeincludes latest footage of him touring and talking
about he’s life. This is a niche film as its audience will be nas fans who are
interested in he’s music and life.
BBFC- British board film classification is a company which review films before
they hit the theatres and choseif it can be realised at the age rating the
producer wants.
Mainstream-
The star wars the force
awakens is classed as a mainstream movie is it’s a part of a francizewhich
shows it has a huge budget set on the film and that it has had a previous
successes. Itis also ranged at a large scale of people and ages as of Lego and
previous video games this brings in the younger fans more and older people
are interested cause the francizewas out when they were younger this shows
the rangeof target audience.

Alternative- Suicide squad
3. LiamMacdonald
The 2016 movie suicidesquad is
classed as an alternative movie as it
doesn’tappeal to mainstream audiences
causeof age and the topic as its based off
an idea or concept such as the villains of
dc comic and the batman series doing this
classes it as an alternative movie as its
based of an idea which is used to create a
film as in the movie the villains come
together as one to savethe city.

Niche-
Time is illmatic
Time is illmatic is classed as a niche film as
it’s based on a person or topic which only a
specific audience will watch and relate to the topic
these a called niche films. Niche films are normally
based on a person or artist or group so the target
audience will be fans of them so its targeted at
their audience and ages.

Anchorage
For the print they have used the
colours pink and purple for the text
as its commonly known that girls and
more took to pink and purple so this
tell us they are the target audience
mostly. The text size is very big so
and bright so its stands out amongst
the white background.
Direct mode of address
She looking directly into the audience
so this tells people she is going to be
one of the main focuses of the film
6. LiamMacdonald
because of how shelooks at the audience. This has a good effect on the girl
audience as the main women is starring right at them so they feel they will relate to
her by her facial expressions tell us shes shocked at something. The two male
characters are looking away from the audience at each other this tells people looking
at the cover and about to watch the film that them two are gonna have some type of
connection together where they don’t really like each other.
anchorage
the text at the top of
the page is in a white
font this helps to
address the
audience and let
people know who
are playing the
characters.
The use of low key
colours like black
tells the audience
something dark or
evil may happen.
The title is in big
black writing this
tells us it’s about
something deep.
By the serious
expressions on the
two characters’ faces
addresses the
audience that the
film is serious
because of their
facial expressions and the direct mode of address of them looking straight
forward atthe audience it makes them more attracted to the film as they are
full on looking into the audience’s eyes.
The Guttenberg principle shows us that people’s eyes are more drawn the the
left upper part of the picture and James bulushiis located there so this tells the
7. LiamMacdonald
viewers that he mustbe a partof the main characters and has a huge focus
and effect on the movie and its audience.
Quotes
The quote that’s been used “The best place to hide is behind a badge” this tells
the audience maybe they are police officers who are corruptand are hiding
fromthe police force it gives a bigger enough understanding that the police
and detectives have a huge part in this film. However, there is a police badge
shown next to the quote so the audience know they are a part of the police.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zffnWNSgeEo
we created are own surveys on whatthey thought about the film and what
they thought about it fromthis chartyou can see the most ages the went to
see this film were young 16 to 20.
8. LiamMacdonald
By the evidence collected mostpeople who watched Blair witch enjoyed the
movie more than not liking the film 67% of people liked the movie by this
evidence it has has a good effect on the target audience and they enjoyed the
film in someway.
9. LiamMacdonald
By the data collected there was an even amount of males and females
together watching blair witch as the results show both 50% of each gender
wherethere.
By the evidence collect by my exit poll for the film Blair witch, the most
common way that people found out about blair witch was through social
10. LiamMacdonald
media such as facebook and twitter for example this is a popular way people
find out about new films cause everyonein the modern day uses it. The second
most was advertisementposters such as billboads, bus stops this is a clever
way to show a new projectto the public as people in the city centres will see
them walking by. The least way people found out aboutthe film was through
television cause it’s a horror moviethey would have to show the trailer later
on in the night when the target audience is awake. This is effective as most
people today own a television of somekind and advertising on programmes
allows the target audience to see it instantly on the breaks.
we asked people if they would recommend the film they justwatched to
someone? By the data collected by my exit poll you can see 66.67% would
recommend it to somebody.
11. LiamMacdonald
we asked people whattheir favouritetype of movie was by the chartabove
50% of people thought that comedy films are the favouritekind. Action
12. LiamMacdonald
adventure, documentary and drama all have16.67% of people who thought
that was there favouritegenre. By this evidence we can see that Blair witch has
a good effect as the people we asked their best genre wasn’thorror so we
know that the majority of the people like it even though they don’tlike
horrors.

Blair witch trailer 2016
At the beginning of the trailer there’s a direct mode of address with one of the
main characters wherehe’s telling them the story of the when film got
captured in the woods. The camera is filmed in first person with camera on
their heads this makes it easier for the audience to understand and to feel like
they are talking to the audience as well this is effective and gets people
interested into the story.
There are mostly low key lightings used in this trailer for example the picture
above. This helps to remind the audience it’s a horror film and the dark black
backgrounds and dark lights help to reflect that to the audience. When there is
mostly dark lighting also helps to tell the audience that something creepy
might happen. By the camera angles and positioning of the frames
