Sonny s Blues
Sonny s Blues
A captivating tale of a relationship between two troubling brothers in Harlem, Sonny s Blues is
told from the perception of Sonny s brother, whose name is never mentioned. Baldwin s choice of
Sonny s brother as a narrator is what makes Sonny s Blues significant in terms of illustrating the
relationship and emotional complications of Sonny and his brother. The significance of Sonny s
Blues lies in the way Sonny s brother describes their relationship based on what he observes, hears,
and feels, and how he struggles trying to understand Sonny through the course of the story. This is a
story of how two African Americans brothers take their own path through life as they struggle to
find meaning in their lives. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their father spent many years struggling to support a family in an overtly racist Northern urban
community. Sonny, by contrast, is a romantic artist who is not afraid of taking risks to pursue
the things he desires. His passion for music makes him impatient with everything else. He drops
out of school; however, he does try to stay away from danger. Sonny does want to live a
respectable life without corruption. He does several things to try to escape this corruption; he
tries to escape by joining the military, but fails. He tries to escape by using illicit drugs and fails.
When life seems to take a toll on Sonny he immerses himself in his music. He realizes that his
problems are real and that he can t truly escape them. Music becomes his life as he plays to
transform his pain and suffering into something beautiful depicted in his jazz and blues music.
Perhaps there is no way that we can absolutely stay out of danger, like Sonny s father said, there is
no safe place for anyone (Baldwin 95). Sonny s music offers an outlet for expressing the darkness
within him while giving his life meaning.
In the pivotal scene of Sonny s Blues, the narrator agrees to go with Sonny to the jazz nightclub.
The narrator s realization that he must accept Sonny as he is sets the stage for the narrator s first

The New Hero of Aeneas Essay
The New Hero of Aeneas
Can myopia afflict an individual with so severe a malady to the extreme of proclaiming, If you
take from Vergilius his diction and metre, what do you leave him ? Unless we take this statement
as a neophyte joke, we may not be able to continue. The objective of this essay is to clean the
bifocals of those whom I presumed after reading the Aeneid as a botched up replica of the Iliad and
the Odyssey conclude that it is indeed so and go about perpetuating such calumny. Hence, to
answer the obvious, if we strip Vergilius of his diction and metre, we leave him a new type of hero.
Well, actually he leaves us a new type of hero, a hero that is foreign to the golden age of Homer. He
presents a new ideal of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although he opens up with This is the tale of arms and of a man and suggests that his hero is
another Achilles, or Odysseus, he has, before the end of the first paragraph, shown that he reaches
beyond Aeneas to the long history that followed from him: and that was the origin of the Latin
nation, the Lords of Alba, and the proud battlements of Rome (I, 6 7). Soon after wards, when he
has noted the obstacles that the Trojans meet in their wanderings, he again ends a period in the
similar note: Such was the cost in heavy toil of beginning the life of Rome (I, 33). Once again,
when Venus complains that her son Aeneas is unjustly treated, Jupiter replies not only by
promising that all will be well for Aeneas but by giving a prophetic sketch of Roman history to
Julius Caesar. This reward, which the ancestor is to receive, is much more than his own success or
glory, more even than his settlement in Italy. It is the assurance of the Roman destiny, of universal
and unending dominion: To Romans I set no boundary in space or time. I have granted them
dominion, and it has no end (I, 278 79). As we can see, at the outset Vergilius shows what kind of
destiny is the subject of his poem. The wanderings, sufferings and ultimate success of Aeneas and
his followers are but a preliminary and preparation for a greater theme. Secondly, there is different
theme in Vergilius art. The fundamental

Neighbors, By Raymond Carver
Neighbors, is a short story written by the poet and writer Raymond Carver; it made its first
appearance in 1971 and it was published in the collection Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? This
delightful story is in brief about a married couple. Bill Miller, a bookkeeper and Arlene Miller, a
secretary who was always engaged with her work. In this reading the author Raymond Carveroffers
to all his readers a moral lesson. With an indescribable and clear technique, he compares the
lifestyle of the Millers and the Stones, a couple that was always traveling and enjoying their

Robert, a blind man who is suffering his wife s death plans to stay overnight and spends an

of compassion and grace is jealous of the friendship between his wife and Robert. Even though,
when Robert gets to their home and the wine glasses increase, the kindness, charisma, and
integrity of Robert enchant the narrator; making him feel less resentful and self confident. As a
result, the man asks Robert if he knows what a cathedral is? Robert admits that he has no idea,

The Prohibition Of Performance Enhancing Drugs
Continue the Prohibition of Performance Enhancing Drugs
Sporting competitions either nationally or internationally have regulations to prohibit or inhibit
the use of performance enhancing drugs (PED s). There been a case for the lifting of these
regulations to create sporting fair across all types of people. Craig Fry, an advocate for the use of
performance enhancing drugs in elite sporting competitions and author of Bring Truth into Play by
Saying Yes to Drugs in Sport, is an Australian health social sciences researcher with training in
psychology, public health, and applied ethics. Fry testifies that the positives that would result in
supervised PED use in elite competitions would create a more fair and balanced playing field.
However Craig Fry s claim is invalid, not only are there a multitude of health risks continually being
discovered, the use of performance enhancing drugs would diminish the spirit of sporting and create
international legal catastrophes with differentiation in the creation of new drug substances.
One reason performance enhancing drugs are prohibited is because of the health risks that are a
potential outcome of injections that are not medically supervised. Craig Fry asserts the idea of the
existence of enabling techniques that provide a safe form of injection for those wishing to use PED
s, implying that these safer alternative forms would inherently prevent any potential health risks.

Giorgio Vasari Research Paper
Then arose new architects who after the manner of their barbarous nations erected buildings in that
style which we call Gothic (dei Gotthi). Florentine historiographer Giorgio Vasari (1511 1574) was
the first to label the architecture of preceding centuries Gothic, in reference to the Nordic tribes that
overran the Roman empire in the sixth century. Vasari implied that this architecture was debased,
especially compared to that of his own time, which had revived the forms of classical antiquity.
Long since rid of derogatory connotations, the label is now used to characterize an art form based
on the pointed arch, which emerged around Paris in the middle of the twelfth century, was practiced
throughout Europe, and lingered in some regions... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While most early medieval churches were covered with timber ceilings, many Romanesque
buildings have either stone barrel vaults (i.e., semi circular) or groin vaults (i.e., bays of barrel
vaults crossing at a right angle). Their walls are necessarily thick to counter the outward thrust of
the vault, and they allow only small windows. From 1100 onward, architects experimented with
innovations that, once properly combined, allowed the dissolution of the wall and a fluid
arrangement of space. For example, they adopted the pointed arch, which has a lesser lateral
thrust than the round arch and is easily adaptable to openings of various widths and heights. They
also developed a system of stone ribs to distribute the weight of the vault onto columns and piers
all the way to the ground; the vault could now be made of lighter, thinner stone and the walls
opened to accommodate ever larger windows. Equally important, flying buttresses began to appear
in the 1170s, whose vertical members (uprights) are connected to the exterior wall of the building
with bridge like arches (flyers). These external structures absorb the outward thrust of the vault at
set intervals just under the roof, making it possible to reduce the building s exterior masonry shell
to a mere skeletal

Can The Desert Tortoise Be Saved
In Can The Desert Tortoise Be Saved? Mackenzie Carro reports that tortoises aren t safe because
of people which caused the raven (the tortoises predator) population to grow but, there is an answer
that can hopefully save the tiny creatures. In this article it talks about humans being the main
source of the problem (raven population). It talks about people moving to the Mojave Desert and
how things like garage, fences and telephone poles attract the ravens into nesting and eating. This
caused the raven population to grow as much as 700%! This is causing the extinctionof the tortoises.

Consolation Behavior Should Be Observed Outside Of Species...
Consolation behavior entails as an increase in comforting contact in response to and directed
toward a distressed individual by an uninvolved bystander, which produces a calming effect (Zahn
Waxler et al., 1992; De Waal Van Roomalen, 1979). Observations of consolation behavior in
animals such as elephants have led to the conclusion that consolation behavior may require
advanced cognitive capacities (Plotnik De Waal, 2014). However, the current study sought to
investigate if consolation behavior could be observed outside of species with advanced cognition,
such as in a rodentspecies. Such an observationwould suggest that consolation behavior relies on
less cognitive capacities and may be variably expressed in species due to their species specific
evolutionary context (Burkett et al., 2016).
Researchers decided to use the rodent species of the prairie vole and the meadow vole in their
study. This was done because the social traits of the prairie vole, i.e. being socially monogamous
and biparental, often coevolve with other cooperative behaviors that increase direct or indirect
fitness, including social buffering among colony members (Burkett et al., 2016). The meadow vole,
in contrast, are promiscuous breeders with no formal social structure. Thus, Burkett and colleagues
offered the following three hypotheses. Firstly, they hypothesized that if both voles are placed
under reproducible laboratory conditions, then the prairie vole will show consolation behavior
while the

Three Ethical Theories Of Ageism
Robert Butler a physician, gerontologist, psychiatrist, and Pulitzer Prize winning author, who was
the first director of the National Institute on Aging described ageism as [a] process of systematic
stereotyping or discrimination against people because they are old, just as racism and sexism
accomplish with skin color and gender. Ageismallows the younger generations to see older people
as different than themselves; thus they subtly cease to identify with their elders as human beings.
Butler saw ageism manifested in a wide range of phenomena on both individual and institutional
levels stereotypes and myths, outright disdain and dislike, simple avoidance of contact, and
discriminatory practices in housing, employment, and services of all kinds. In today s society
people view seniors as less valuable. They are perceived as frail and undesirable because of their ...

The Feminist Legal Theory focuses on women who are of mature age being given less rights and
opportunities and are also being disregarded in the discourse. It has been pointed out by feminist
writers that age can be an organizing principle of power, just as gender, race, class, and sexual
orientation are.
In context of how systems maintain some arrangements but also may substitute inequalities in later
life, other authors have begun to contemplate age and gender lenses. For example as a group,
married women and men tend to be better off in terms of their economic/material, health and social
resources than those who are not married. Similarly, younger age associates of married women
have a tendency to be better off than older age associates of married women.
This invites consideration of how rules specifically or cumulatively across the life course aid the
relative benefits or drawbacks for various groups of older

The Prehistory Of Home
In the book The Prehistory of Home Jerry Moore discusses the importance that home structures have
had for humans over time in different places of the world. He says that In addition to their basic and
fundamental function of providing shelter from natural elements, dwellings are powerful and
complex concentrates of humanexistence... our dwellings reflect and shape our lives (Moore, 3).
He believes that homes are representations of the existence of individual humans as well as their
surroundings. Jerry Moore is successful in explaining the importance of home in archaeology
throughout history with colorful examples as well as a comparison of the importance of the
home in the past to the importance of the home in the future. Moore sees the home as a
reflection of the self as well as a mirror image of one s surroundings. His goal is to describe the
importance of archaeology in history of home by critiquing the writing of an illuminated history
and that by exploring the homes of people in the past we can see the pas from a different
perspective (Moore, 9). He says that, archaeology is the only way those ancient lives can be
recovered and added to the consultable record of what it means to be human (Moore, 10). He also
wants to abandon the notion of time as linear and wants it to be seen as a continuum instead. He
believes the the goal of understanding the past intersects with the continuing human domestic
project (Moore, 11). Another goal of the book is to survey the ways

2.If you had the ability to change your group project, how would you alter it and why? (1 paragraph)
I would alter the project by using the formula of VO2max=15x(HRmax/HRrest), and have each
participant perform a VO2Max test, by using the metabolic cart. I would then compare the results
from the metabolic cart and the VO2 equation, and them compare the results for comparison. I
would make this change, because our group had to alter the formula of VO2max=15x(HRmax
/HRrest), in order to perform a submaximal test. What we did was calculated the max heart rate,
and multiplied that value by 85% of VO2 which would be considered a submaximal test.
I would have liked to have seen the comparison to the equation and the metabolic cart, to see if
there was an increase or decrease in the values of each of the measurements of maximal oxygen
consumption. This would be interesting to analyze, because the population will not always have a
metabolic cart around to measure VO2. If the equation showed similar values to the metabolic cart,
the equation would be a good tool to use for estimation if the metabolic cart was not available.
3.For your project, were the test procedures provided in the Metabolic Cart/VO2 Testing lecture
followed? Which steps were followed and which were not? If steps were not followed, why? (2
paragraphs)

There is no history of a dual development of one type of full day program to provide care for
children of working mothers and another type of half day program to provide education for
children of non employed mothers. Education replaces physical care as the primary emphasis in
this program. Class size increases with age, ranging from 20 to 40 children. Each group
typically has two teachers and a nurse. Preschool: Serve children upper age 5. A part of the
elementary school. It is a typically half day program serving children the year prior to the 1st
grade. Comparable to U.S. public kindergartens, these classes usually place greater emphasis
upon academics and use teaching methods similar to those of the Chinese elementary
classrooms. In both of those three kind of program, there is a common problem. Those children
rarely work independently or in self selected group tasks. On the contrary, the point is on
following teacher s guidance, instead of self invention. All the children will do the same thing at
the same time. For example, in a typical art class, teacher demonstrates how to fold and twist a
paper butterfly. Then she check every child doing the same step before proceed to the next step.
Painting class usually include children to copy an object of the teacher. Even if the use of teaching
toys, all children are using the same toy at the same time.

Subject: Karen Carlin Case Study: Issue Analysis and Proposed Solutions
Date: 21 October 2010
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memo is to analyze and propose solutions for the issues Karen Carlin faces as
she takes on the supervisor role for the schedule typist department of Hepplewhite Boyce. The
three issues to be analyzed are (1) lack of productivity, (2) insubordination and abuse of company
resources, and (3) staff mismanagement. First, the problems will be defined and probable causes
discussed. Then, recommendations will be made to resolve these issues.

She has also been known to report to work, only to leave the office for hours at a time doing
personal errands. Pat is influencing the others to take long lunches and be late for work as well.
This blatant abuse can be attributed to the following possible causes:
1.The employees are not challenged.
2.The employees resent management for not listening to their ideas regarding process improvement.
Clearly, the insubordination and abuse of company resources cannot be allowed to continue. Staff
Mismanagement
And finally, there is the issue of staff mismanagement. The supervisor, Keith Frazier, is only
checking in with this department one to two times per week. Mr. Frazier is aware that Pat is
making international phone calls. He is also aware that Pauline found a way for Pat to make these
calls from the building s elevator once he had the phone system modified to only allow internal
calls. Mr. Frazier has also been fielding complaints from the accountants about not receiving their
tax schedules in a timely fashion. However, he has failed to confront either of these issues. This
lack of management can be attributed to the following:
1.Mr. Frazier does not respect the type of work done by this department.
2.Mr. Frazier fears confrontation.
Something must be done to allow for better management of the staff.
RECOMMENDED SOLUTIONS
Recommendations to solve the issues in the three areas

To gain favorable support from the already war tired public, the United States presented the
situation in Syria as that of a dictatorship denying basic civil rights to its people, democracy. The
United States was trying to support the survival of democracy and to support the oppressed. This
explanation provided to the general public to gain favorable support mirrors that of the Vietnam
War, where the reason provided was to provide support to South Vietnam to prevent the spread of

The History Of Wine Production
The history of wine production traces back thousands of years, with the earliest evidence of a
wine like drink located in China circa and estimated to be of at 7000 BC. Wine was the center of
the agricultural culture of many civilizations like the Romans, the Phoenicians and the Greeks, who
considered winea divine drink of the gods. Wine remains until today one of the largest components
of the agricultural production in the Western civilization (Appendix 1).
Grapevine is one of the most economically and socially important crops around the globe. Grapes

Realizing the global significance of wine, scientists specializing in plant biology, viticulture and

Germany, Spain and South Africa) launched the International Grape Genome Program (IGGP) in
the beginning of the century. It involves a cooperative genome sequence analysis of the species
Vitis Vinifera, one of the most common grapevine species.
The goal of the IGGP is to provide insights into the molecular biology of the species. Using genetic
tools, scientists are attempting to modify specific parts of the Vitis genome to produce higher
quality wine, disease resistant crops and provide a database for producers to plant the right
species with respect to the specific environment of their production site. According to data
collected in 2007, half of the grape genome has been mapped, which includes more than 22800
nucleotide sequences and the project is expected to grow even more the next years. The data has
been placed in the public databases of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).

Automobiles and Technology in the Prosperous 1920s.
During the 1920s the nation prospered under wealth and happiness, something never attainable
during or before the wartime. A large increase in income for Americans meant that they were able
to afford more appliances like a toaster or a car. Prices dropped with industrial innovations like the
moving assembly line. With these new prices, people could buy more per dollar. Henry Ford s,
The Ford Motor Company is an example of a business that prospered in the 1920s. The innovation
of Ford s Model T allowed many Americans to explore the country and experience being on the
road. Along with these new products and appliances, businesses made a new form of payment,
credit, which allowed people to pay less up front to use the money they save for other things like
food. The 1920s were known as a time of prosperity and inventions and technology such as the
automobile helped improve American lives for the better.
Businesses prospered when their products were sold at reasonable margins and due to mass
consumerism, they made quick profits. Especially in the 1920s as the national average income rose,
more people bought more things. Corporate elites built a new more consumer oriented, business
philosophy (Scott). This philosophy included the option to buy on a plan called credit. Shoppers
now have credit in the form of installment payment plans (Scott). Having to

Unparalleled, unique, one of a kind, and in a class of their own. Student leaders are one of the
rarest commodities in the educational realm of modern society. A leader is a highly pristine and
sought after position within the political, social, and educational aspects of society. Leaders are
also one of the most ridiculed and chastised figures of the general public for their stereotypical
greed and extraordinary selfishness, but personally, a greedy selfish person is not a leader. The
world is constantly changing clear into the third millennium A.D. and our perception of leaders
must be just as quickly molded, while still maintaining traditional virtues of leadership. Martin
Chemers expertly describes leadership in his book, An Integrative Theory of Leadership, as a
process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the
accomplishment of a common task (Chemers, Martin). A student leader is someone who cares for
their school enough to want the best for it, someone who wants the best for themselves and the
student body. A student leader is someone who exhibits the qualities of intelligence, adjustment,

Class Between Class And Class Essay
Economic class division in the United States is simultaneously one of the most visible and
invisible issues facing this nation today. Unlike issues that many passionate individuals aren t
afraid to voice their opinions on such as racism, sexism, climate change, and marriage equality,
the issue of class divide is like the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about or
address. As Bell Hooks puts it, author of Where We Stand: Class Matters, Racism and sexism
can be exploited in the interests of class power. Yet no one wants to talk about class. (Hooks 7)
The fact that discussions of class and class divide have become such a taboo in the United States
is truly disappointing. Class, more than race or gender, is the single biggest factor in
determining someone s success. Therefor, it should go without saying that discussions and
open dialog about class are crucial in this society in order to advances its citizens and promote
success with as many people as possible. It wasn t always like this. There was indeed a time in
our history when class was talked about, a time when the poor were cared for, not seen as
second class citizens or a taboo. David Hilfiker describes an earlier time in our history as a
nation when it was just assumed that a physician would care for the poor. However, in more
recent times Hilfiker finds himself regarded almost as a saint because he chooses to work with the
poor. (Hooks 41) Although the precise point at which this switch in logic

New England, Middle, And Southern Colonies
There were many different early American colonies. The settlers in these colonies came from many
different places such as; England, France, Spain, and The Netherlands. Also, the settlers in these
colonies settled for many different reasons. The New England, Middle, and Southern colonies
developed a different way of life because of differences in aspects of life such as; government,
religion, and geography.
To begin, the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies developed a different way of life
because of differences in aspects of life such as government. A quote from the document Should
Government be based on religion? (document b) is, Why government should be based on religion
(...) authority from God. This quote is from founder of one of the New England colonies and he is
saying that the New England colonies have religion based on god because god is giving them
authority to do everything. Another quote to support this claim from the textbook History Alive on
page 55 is, Middle colony(...) government: self governing. This quote is showing that in the middle
colonies they had a self governing government or the government was based off the people and
less off of a god leading them. These two quotes tie back to the claim because it shows how the
government was different from the Middle colonies (based off the people) to the New England
colonies (based off religion). Also, the way a place is ran will cause the people to act and do things
differently, overall

The Great Depression And The People Of The 1970 S
In today s day and age when people think of country music they imagine the classics, Johnny
Cash, Willie Nelson, George Strait and many more. When people think of a redneck, they
imagine a diehard country boy, who loves his country with a confederate flag in one hand and a
beer in the other. But that is our generations take on these two words. The real question here is
what did those two words mean to the people who came up with them and defined them. It couldn
t have been easy. It was no surprise that people were still recovering from the Great Depression
and the more recent recession. Families were left destitute, men were working factory jobs for less
than minimum wage, if that, and people had just about given up hope. In the time of... Show more

This was huge for individuals considering people were being grouped together under general labels,
such as white trash , hillbilly and redneck . Not only were they being grouped, it was being
publicized on talk shows, through music, books, movies, news outlets and many more forms of
media. What the upper class people failed to see when they were stereotyping was, While these
labels developed in different contexts and are sometimes used in different ways, they have evolved
into virtually synonymous labels demarcating a problematic whiteness polluted by poverty and
rural culture (Southern Rock Musicians: Construction of White Trash Pg.207). Middle and upper
class men and women felt the need to put poor, white families down to make themselves seem that
much higher up, but in reality it was an out for taking responsibility for patriarchy. If anything
these titles the poor, white men were given were just a way to define inequalities and social
problems that society wanted to make apparent to hide from their own personal problems.
When America today sees a Confederate Flag being flown or displayed, there is usually a
controversy that occurs. People in todays society still believe that it is a symbol of racism and just
inappropriate to be flying considering our country s history. Obviously not much has changed since
the 1970 s. People back then believed it was racial bigotry and a symbol of uneducated white trash.

Ergonomics and Good Work Habits
Ergonomics is the scientific, interdisciplinary study of individuals and their physical relationship to
their environment. Ergonomics can be further defined as the design of the workplace, equipment,
machine, tool, product, environment, and system, taking into consideration human s physical,
physiological, biomechanical, and psychological capabilities. Ergonomic design is the application
of this body of knowledge to the design of tools, machines, systems, tasks, jobs, and environments
for safe, comfortable and effective human use. The term ergonomicsis derived from the Greek word
ergos meaning work and nomos meaning natural laws of or study of. In the United States, the term
human factors engineeringis often used.

Ergonomists have helped many businesses improve working conditions and employee health
issues related to computer and office work. In many cases, most employers are responsible for
any health issues that may arise from their employees due to work hazards. Work hazards may be
caused by many different factors in the environment. In the average computer workstation,
employees are prone to over a dozen hazards. There exist two factors that can prevent this:
forming good work habits and ergonomically designed computer workstations. These work
hazards can cause several different injuries such as, Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), Cumulative
Trauma Disorder (CTD), and Repetitive Motion Disorder (RMD). They are described as painful
conditions of the hands, arms, neck, and back that develop over days, weeks or years.
Epidemiological research has determined that if these biomechanical conditions are present, the
incidence of work related injuries increase. These conditions are therefore known as risk factors for
musculoskeletal injury. Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) takes place from the repeated physical
movements of certain body parts which result in damage to tendons, nerves, muscles, and other soft

Medicine Bag Short Story
Medicine Bag
The right of passage that is most significant to me is passing down tradition like the story the
medicine bag. The medicine bag has an important rite of passage in the story because it s saying
that families have their traditions. In the story Martin gets the medicine bag that his grandfather
passed along to him once he knew it was his time to go.
His grandfather came a long way to give it to Martin. He showed Martin what to put in it and what
to do once it s in hi possession.
The medicine bag has the most significant rite of passage to me because passing down tradition is
very important in my opinion. In the story the grandfather came to town to give his grandson the

what to put in it his grandfather told him that he needs to replace the sage that is in it now and he
needs to put iron in it. In the story
Martin was talking to his grandfather about why he is getting the medicine bag instead of his
father and his grandfather said My son , He went one after clearing his throat, had no sons, only
one daughter, your mother. So the medicine bag must be passed on to you.

What Is the Percent by Mass of NaHCO3 in Alka Seltzer Tablets?
When it comes to understanding how starting material and product effect each other, it has been
inevitably thought that the amount of starting material has always included a limiting and excess
reactant that conclusively determines the product amount. The Lab Manual stated in applicable
cases, such as buying amounts of starting material to form a certain product, could change a
reaction, or have economic effects of wasting unnecessary amounts of material, therefore,
unnecessary amounts of money.1 For instance, determining the amount of active ingredients in the
fizz reaction of an Alka Seltzer tablet is a great example to understand how much reactant is needed
to cause the relief (determined by the product) according to the Lab Manual.1 According to
researcher Dr. Catherine Chen, sodium bicarbonate is used for the acid base netrualization.2 The Lab

observation made is that the changing amounts in each trial according to Table 1.1 show that, with
changing amounts of starting material, the mass of carbon dioxide and the mass of sodium
bicarbonate are inevitably affected. However, looking closely at Figure 1.1, the amounts of vinegar

Urban Runoff Is The Primary Source Of Ocean Pollution
The oceans need to be protected because it is where life began and if not taken care of, life as
we know it will end. The well being of the ocean is constantly being threatened and needs to stop.
When dangerous substances go into the ocean, ecosystems suffer and become endangered along
with the lives of people and marine life. The importance of protecting and preserving the quality
and biodiversity of the world s coasts must be recognized because they are truly irreplaceable. If
humans are not educated , and become careless about what is thrown on the ground or sprayed
on lawns, disastrous effects follow when it comes to the condition of the ocean s ecosystems,
which can endanger life itself, leading to a problem only we can correct. There is historical
evidence of ocean pollution, although the problem still shadows us today. One of the most poorly
understood causes ocean pollution is urban runoff. Urban runoff is also one of the leading causes
of ocean pollution, Surfrider agrees, Urban runoff is often the primary source of ocean pollution.
The Ocean Friendly Gardens (OFG) Program educates and assists people in creating landscapes
that utilize native plants, permeable ground covers and water retention features to prevent urban

Unfortunately, there are huge disparities of the national laws on trade marks of the Member States
which resulted in an adverse impact on the internal market. Therefore, the creation on a unitary
trade mark system in the Community was a logical development in the creation of a Common
Market . One of the earliest legislative in EU is The First Council Directive 89/104/EEC
(hereinafter Harmonisation Directive). The main objective if this legislation was to minimise the
differences between the national trade mark systems. These differences present barriers to trade

guidelines on substance. Even though the Harmonisation Directive which covers a wide range of
issues and is hailed by the harmonization enthusiasts, the part such as the national trade mark office

To what extent does success in china depend on businesses...
Success for a business in a large market such as china can be a very difficult thing to achieve;
there are many factors that can affect the success or failure of a business that decides to merge
into China s markets. Most people would assume that due to the very large population of china
(roughly 1.35 billion/1,363,496,913) operating a business there would not be a problem, this
however is incorrect, just because there is lots of people there doesn t for a minute make it any
easier to set u p and run a successful business.
The main point I would say that is essential to success in china is adaptation. If a business is able

charges as much as 50% more for some of its products in China than in the U.S., the U.K. and

adapted. Carrying a Starbucks cup is seen as a status symbol, a way to demonstrate sophistication
and the capability to afford a personal luxury for the up and coming middle class in China. This
links into the brand recognition that Starbucks has created for itself and shows how they carefully
targeted their products at the new middle class, it is estimated that it s more than 300 million,

total Chinese population and as Starbucks has such a recognisable brand people are more liable to

However, that being said some large companies have tried to adapt for the Chinese markets, and

Soviet Union s Presence in Eastern Europe Essay
Soviet Union s Presence in Eastern Europe
This paper will introduce the development of Soviet internationalism alongside the development of
Soviet interests in Eastern Europe. It will be argued that the Soviet interests which developed out of
the Wars became fixed alongside the ideology behind internationalism. The legacy of Stalinism
influenced the development of Soviet policy toward Eastern Europe and Soviet internationalism and
the Cold war meant that the Soviet presence in Eastern Europe would persist until Gorbachev. The
Soviets could not consider withdrawing from Eastern Europe so long as they were governed by an
ideology which viewed the world as two distinct and opposing camps.

Stalin s eyes turned toward Eastern Europe and through his dissolution of the Comintern he
sought to make unthreatening appeals to a common Slavic identity. According to D Encausse,
The may 15, 1943, decision to dissolve the Comintern which suggested a definitive retreat by the
USSR to within its own borders, in fact signified a more dynamic opening to the external world
because it was based upon a real and growing phenomenon, power (D Encausse, H, 1987, pg. 7).
Soviet intentions became clearer when the iron curtain was realised at Yalta and at Potsdam.
However, Stalin did not wish to move the Soviet Union into Europe, he wished to isolate Eastern
Europe outside of Western influence and under the control of the Soviet powers based in Moscow.
Stalin s aims in Eastern Europe epitomise Soviet aims because of the fact that his policies set the
tone for Soviet policy toward Eastern Europe and his policies were still influencing Soviet Society
when Gorbachev came to power. His alienation of Eastern Europe from the West was both

the past ten years there have 650 infected.(Yu Chan, 2014). This is not a large number because of
the fact it is not spread through human to human contact but through already infected poultry. The
prevalence rate is the number of current/existing cases worldwide. The United Stateshas yet to have

Theme Of Chivalry In The Knight s Tale
Geoffrey Chaucer s romantic poem The Knight s Tale chronicles the adventures of two ancient
Greek knights and their quest to win the affection of Emily, a beautiful noblewoman. Bound to
uphold the chivalric code of loyalty and honor of the time, Palamon and Arcite discover themselves
at odds with their noble ideals as they battle one another in pursuit of love. Unable to reconcile the
knight s oath of honor with their obsessive and selfish desires, the actions of Chaucer s main
characters fail to uphold the basic principles of chivalry.
As a first example, Chaucer highlights the knights struggle to uphold their pledge of chivalry when
a disagreement arises between the two comrades over who holds the right and privilege to love
Emily. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Allowing their feelings to cloud their judgment and control their actions, the men lose all sense of
reason and decorum as they resort to antagonistic behavior and name calling; contrary to the
standards of the pledge they have avowed to honor. Rossignol asserts Chaucer s characters
undercut the very ethos [of chivalry] . . . the knights themselves display ambivalence toward their
own motives and behavior (Rossignol). Palamon and Arcite, oblivious to any personal
responsibility or wrongdoing in the dispute over Emily, expect the other to uphold the chivalric
code without doing so himself. Most certainly, if one or both of the men heeded the high
expectations of conduct, they would spare their brotherhood and avoid the perils of their battle, but
neither man finds it within his conscience to do so.
In like manner, Theseus actions also diverge from the ideals of chivalry as he aims to further his
political standing. When he finds Acrite and Palamon dueling in the grove, Theseus rules the men
to reassemble this day fifty wykes, fer ne ner, / Everich of you shal brynge an hundred knyghtes

viewing the battle. Similarly, when charged by his parliament to

The Company Overview
Company Creation
My workplace and subsequently where I undertook my work based learning is the popular gourmet
hamburger chain Byron Hamburgers , the company was founded in 2007 by Tom Byng and
currently has 82 restaurants in the UK with 54 of them located in London. The inspiration that
prompted Byron s creation occurred to Tom Byng during a trip to America, he ate at many diners
during this trip sampling some of the best hamburgers that the nation has to offer. Upon his return
to the U.K he realised that there were no restaurants that served hamburgers the proper American
way and Byron was created.
Food and Beverage
The menu at Byron consists of hamburgers, salads and sides along with an extensive selection of
craft beers. Due to the nature of the food served, such as the burgers being cooked medium and the
different components of each burger, it is necessary that staff are sufficiently trained on all aspects
of the menu.
Service Style

HSM Law Profile Paper There are federal, state, county, and even tribal laws that have been put
into place to protect both the client and the human service worker. Some are more of a guiding
tool for human service workers, while some laws are designed to protect the client in a wide
variety of ways. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) was originally enacted
in January 1974 to require agencies to assess, investigate, and provide treatment, and prosecution in
order to receive federal funding. To fully understand everything that this law has to offer, we must
learn more about it. Possibly the best place to find information on this law, ... Show more content on

The law also provides Federal Grants to agencies that fall under its guidelines. Many agencies
could not exist or be of any benefit to the community without this funding. This law protects
children with disabilities, by means that housing that is unique to them be defined with
specialized training and equipped to do so. Abandoned infants are a unique situation that is not
as easy as one would expect to solve. Even though the client is unable to speak for themselves,
they still need protection. When dealing with near homeless or homeless families, a human
service worker may find they are unsure when to become involved more, which is something
that this law will help guide them through. Finally, to protect children all around, it is now
apparent that certain jobs that work with children must make their employees subject to
background checks. CAPTA will certainly have a heavy impact on human service workers in
many ways. This law is actually the beginning basis for child abuse laws in general. Over the
years many laws have been designed in similarities to model their own version of CAPTA.
Human Service workers will find themselves both enforcing the laws that are under CAPTA, as
well as following the rules that are defined under CAPTA. Sometimes, a human service worker
may find themselves referring to CAPTA with the client to explain what is required and what is
not. For example, if a client

An Investigation of the Gender Gap of Boys Underachieving...
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender gap, especially of boys underachievement
in literacy, and discover if there are particular strategies that schools can implement in order to
raise the attainment levels of boys. As the issue of the gender gap is so wide I selected literature
to review which covered a wide range of theorists and existing studies. Specifically I wanted to
identify some of the suggested causes for the underachievement of boys and any already proposed
effective strategies which I could execute in my own study. The data I collected from the study was
both qualitative and quantitative in order to give a more valid outcome; these included an open
ended, semi structured interview, which I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regardless of Gorard s (2001) analysis, there are many who still feel that the performance gap is a
concern. In 1993 the Ofsted report offered some insight into differing perspectives and explanations
for boys underachievement, including the lack of male literacy role models, classroom strategies,
curriculum literacy content, perceptions of behaviour, social class and ethnicity (cited in Bearne,
2004). Solsken (1995, cited in Bearne, 2004) added to this list claiming that literacy is associated
more with females and femininity and believes that this possibly has a negative effect on boys and
their attitudes towards reading. Solken s (1995) argument links very closely with Watson et
al.(2007) who proposed that popular explanations often focus on boys biological make up .
They claim that evidence shows that hegemonic masculinity is central to ... the struggles boys
face as literacy learners (Watson et al. 2010: 357). Rowan et al (2002) also believes that boys
are biologically different to girls and that this biologically difference is the cause of behavioural
differences (Rowan et al. 2002, cited in Watson et al. 2010:357). He believes that due to these
biological differences, boys and girls are defined by inherent masculinity and femininity
characteristics and in order for educational success this must be acknowledged and accommodated
for. This is an important assertion to consider for

Abolish The Child Support System Essay
Abolish the Child Support System
Child support should no longer be feasible in the United States, because it is outdated, tough on
low income fathers and most importantly undermines the efforts of the fathers who do get involve
in their child s life. Sadly, the government merely focus on the enforcement portion of the law.
Child support in this day and age has prolonged its deceptive theory of actually supporting the child
with the absence of a parent; typically a father. In the United States, when parents do not live
together, children most often live with their mothers (Grall 2009). Granted that more women and
government have taken advantage of the absences of fathers; without facing any repercussions
for their actions. In the end, such absences carry detrimental effect on most children who are
raised by a single parent with the government hypothetical assistance. These pressing issues are
becoming prominent as most children in the U.S. spends some portion of their childhood living
apart from at least one of their parents (Grall 2009). Part of this occurs mainly because of high
divorce rates as well as an unprecedented increase of childbirth to unmarried parents. In fact, one of
the greatest indicator for poverty and welfare dependency is a child born to a single mother headed
household (McCormick 2004). This concept does not merely dismantle the importance of family
values, but it also promotes the continuous cycle of single parenting. For this reason, having a

Macbeth, By William Shakespeare Essay
INTRODUCTION
Macbeth is Shakespeare s briefest disaster and among the briefest of his plays. Researchers by
and large concur that the show was composed around 1606 in light of the fact that different
references in the play compare to occasions which happened in that year. Numerous likewise
accept that it was created for an execution before King James I, who had a profound enthusiasm
for witchcraft. Perhaps the play was one of the court stimulations offered to King Christian IV of
Denmark amid his visit to London in 1606. Moreover, Researchers propose that Shakespeare may
have composed Macbeth to laud King James heritage by partner him, through the recorded Banquo,
to the first Scottish lord, Kenneth MacAlpin. The foremost scholarly hotspot for Macbeth is
Raphael Holinshed s Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1577). Nonetheless,
Shakespeare brought incredible freedoms with this source, adjusting different verifiable occasions
to expand the sensational impact of his disaster. Extensive open deliberation exists with respect to
the heartbreaking setting of Macbeth s defeat. In show, a disaster convention associate relates the
critical occasions or activities in a hero s life which, taken together, realize the calamity. Established
standards of catastrophe likewise oblige that the saint s ruin inspires pity and apprehension in the
group of onlookers. A few commentators attest that since Macbeth s activities all through the play
are inher ently detestable, he

Henry Ford Essay examples
Henry Ford Henry Ford grew up on a small farm near Dearborn, Michigan. As Henry grew up, he
spent most of his free time tinkering, and finding out exactly how things work. A pastime that
developed thinking and logic abilities. But being a farmer s boy, he had little spare time, for
there were always chores to be done. By twelve years of age, Henry was doing a man s work on
the farm and had begun repairing machinery for neighbouring farmers. His father pleased when
Henry would repair a harness, reset a tool handle, or make some hinges for furniture but he was
not pleased however, when his son repaired things for neighbours, as he often did, without
charging them a cent. It was one day when Henry saw a steam engine powering a... Show more

In 1888 Henry and Clara were married. As a gift, Mr. Ford gave Henry and his bride forty acres
of wooded land. Henry built a small cottage and they lived off the land. Henry s father thought
Henry was content and had settled down for life, but this was not to be so. All of Henry s spare
time was still spent on engines. Three years after their marriage, Henry saw an internal
combustion gas engine in Detroit. He decided that this is the engine that he would have to use
on his car. He had to move back to Detroit. For two years Henry worked nights as a steam
engineer for the Edison Illuminating Company. He worked every night from 6 P.M. to 6 A.M.
and earned $45 a month. After working hours he experimented on his gas engine. His wages
barely paid for living expenses and for tools and materials for his tinkering. But his wife was
cooperative and did not complain but rather, encouraged him. In November, 1983, a son was
born to Henry and Clara, they named him Edsel. A few weeks later, just before Christmas,
Henry had completed his engine. A successful testing of the engine excited Henry and he decided
to build one with two cylinders. Slightly over two and a half years later, Henry had built his first
horseless carriage with four bicycle wheels and seat. His contraption would not fit out of the
workshop so he simply knocked out a portion of the wall. The car

Brief Overview of American Literature From Plymouth to the...
The trace in literature and history from Plymouth and Virginia colonies through the Jeffersonian
Enlightenment to the transcendentalists represented by Emerson and Hawthorne all begins with
John Smith, whom had been granted by a charter from King James I reached Virginia in 1607.
The settlers landed in what was Jamestown ready to begin the dangerous undertaking of
surviving in a new environment. Dealing with harsh winters, lack of drinking water, and the
spread of disease made life in Jamestown difficult for the settlers. Which Smith details in his
writing, later on a man named William Bradford set sail with for the new world with a religious
group called the puritans. The group landed on Massachusetts Plymouth Harbor in 1620. Soon
after being settled Bradford was made to be governer of the new colony. The people of the colony
suffered of a while until the help of the Massasoit leader of Native Americans in the New England
area showed the people of the colony how to harvest the right foods and there was even a
gathering of food and entertainment, which created an agreement between the Indians and the
colony in which lasted twenty four years. The pact did not last for much long after the
Wampanoag nation had been peaceful with the settlers and colonists. However, in 1675 son of
Massasoit, Metacom who was as called King Philip by the colonists led the Native Americans to
fight against the colonists as they captured land and persons in the colony. One of the persons

A Streetcar Named Desire, Literary Analysis Essay
A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams Stella has embraced him with both arms,
fiercely, and full in the view of Blanche. He laughs and clasps her head to him. Over her head he
grins through the curtains at Blanche. (Williams 73) A Streetcar Named Desire written by
Tennessee Williams exemplifies the theme of a struggle to attain happiness. The play not only
portrays this theme in its characters and setting, but through the literary devices of Foil, Imagery,
and Intertextuality. Williams took great care in applying each of these literary device techniques to
the theme as he presents an intriguing contrast between Blanche and Stanley, vivid images both
animalistic and broken, and imploring the use of the Odyssey to further... Show more content on

The low moans of the clarinet and the blue piano all portray the image of what an animal would
do. (Williams 129) Another form of imagery in the play is broken images. There is the broken
mirror and Mitch tearing the lamp. There is also Blanche s husband Hickey killing himself.
There is also the loss of the baby which is a broken part of the story. Intertextuality is the shaping
of texts meanings by other texts. Williams uses this literary device by referring to Book Nine of
the Odyssey. Blanche is equal to deception. She is always flirting with some man especially
Stanley. Anytime she gets the chance while Stella is out of the room. Blanche is like Odysseus
because she is very well aware of her deceptive truths. She uses them to manipulate in situations.
She blinds Stanley by her deceptive ways. Intertextuality is also used in the image of Cyclopes.
Stanley portrays the image of Cyclopes. He is also referred to as One eye monster, in the play. He
is referred to this character because of his strong will and physically strong, but he falls easily into
Blanche s trap of being blinded. Although there are many other literary devices that are used
throughout A Streetcar Named Desirethese devices work together in unison to thoroughly express
the theme in their struggle to attain happiness. Though they try very hard the happiness is never
really gained. These literary devices are used to create an

A Great Author By Norman Vincent Peale
A great author, Norman Vincent Peale, (n.d) had once said, I believe there are two sides to the
phenomenon known as death, this side where we live, and the other side where we shall
continue to live. Eternity does not start with death. We are in eternity now . That was the only
thought buzzing my mind when I got out of my client, Jenny s house. Jenny recently lost her
husband but in his funeral she looked calm, happy and acted like she was not grieving at all. Her
families were concerned and had asked me to take care of her as they thought she has some
psychological issue or was just at great denial. Since, Jenny and I knew each other for long, we
established good therapeutic relationship instantly. According to her mother, she always talked
to herself, laughs loudly at the middle of the night and at times refers to her husband, as he is
still alive. I felt that she is in grieving process and needs some time to recover. However, when I
asked her how she was feeling about her loss, she looked at me like she did not understand what
I was talking about. Later, she said that her husband is still there with her and he is not lost. She
can feel him and talk to him. Furthermore, she express that she realizes her behavior might seem
weird to others but for her that is real and it was happening to her. She shares with me stories
about her connectedness with her husband in a spiritual way. It is just his body have left the world
but his soul was still there with her. Moreover she

Military Involvement Of The Oklahoma City National Memorial
Lastly, although not an easily overcome controversial challenge that this community was forced to
face was ultimately the trial of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. Due to the psychological stress
this incident rooted in a portion of the people involved, it is understandable to comprehend why the
judicial process of these two individuals caused issues to some extent. Eventually with the
conclusion of the legal process, the strenuous atmosphere surrounding the trial, and ultimately the
completion of the Oklahoma City National Memorial to honor those lives lost that day, the last
challenge this community face was overcome.

The Stafford act is the backbone to any assistance provided by the federal government in the
aftermath of a disaster, specifically in this case the Military Support to Civil Authorities (MSCA).
Originally amended from its predecessor, the Disaster Relief act of 1974, the Stafford act was
implemented in 1988. In the case of the Oklahoma City bombing, there is an exception to the use of
military resources through solely the authority provided from the Stafford Act, and that is the
Immediate Response Authority based under the MSCA. This exception allows a local military
commander to provide assistance through resources and personnel to civil authorities before
authorization was handed down. According to the U.S. Army, At the scene, some 100
Guardmembers immediately helped the search for survivors. They set up an emergency operations
center and reported to the state s civil emergency management agency (Smith, 2010). Hastily
following these actions, assistance came from two local military bases, Fort Sill and Tinker Air
Force Base, where the commanding officers authorized a variety of equipment and personnel to
assist before the federal government authorized assistance. Fort Sill, an Army installation

Violence, Foolishness, And Impulsiveness In The Knight s Tale
The Knight s Tale is one of many tales from the Canterbury Tales. This story sets in the city of
Athens. Which opens into the theme of violence, foolishness, impetuousness, and impulsiveness;
initially exceedingly emotional responses. One example is when two of our main characters,
Palmon and Arcite, both fall in love with Theseus s sister in law (Emelye). These two blood
brothers, leave each other after seeing Emelye out of the window of the tower. Which, I believe is
a very impulsive decision, for they have not got time to know who she is and her personality. Also,
they act like mortal enemies after just seeing her, so this thoughtprocess was completely impulsive
and based on her looks. And later, Arcite tries to get to know her better after he was released
from his imprisonment sentence by disguising himself, so he can take a job as a page in Emelye
s chamber. I believe this shows that he wants to know her, but also it shows he is not being
honest with her, which shows he was being impulsive and deceiving. He only learned about the
little things that she liked, not her personality. Emelye learned a little bit about Arcite after the
little conversing they shared, so they learned a little of each other s personality. This shows that
the friendship was growing and not an intimate relationship, like Arcite wanted. So the story
goes on and both Palmon and Arcite have been released from prison. And they happen to both
decide to wander in the woods. Then they confront each other, each claiming the right to
Emelye. The next day, they were brutally hacking away at each other. Honestly, I believe they
are being impulsive and violent, they still barely knew Emelye (especially Palmon), and they
decide to go kill each other. Then here shows up Theseus, which a loving and wise duke, but he
can also be a little impulse when it comes to violence (which is fairly normal for a duke in the
1390s). Theseus tries to be loving when he sees the two men fighting, but he changes his mindwhen
he found out it was Palmon and Arcite fighting. And that they were fighting because they love
Emelye. Then Theseus was about to respond by killing them, but his loving wife and Emelye
intervened, pleading for their lives. They pleaded

Examples Of Satan In Paradise Lost By Dantes Inferno
The way Dante describes Satan makes the theme even more noticeable, especially when the way
he describes his version of Satan is contrasted with other images of Satan. The Satan of Milton s
Paradise Lost, for example, still has some of the rule and beauty he had when he was the most
dominant and attractive of all the angels. He was energetic, was able to make influential speeches
in hell, and able to leave Hell to lure Eve. His speechmaking has even influenced some future
readers that there is something honorable about his decision to rebel against God: Better to reign in
Hell than serve in Heaven, he says (Lines 258 263
). Dante s image of Satan is hideous and powerless, stuck in the ice made by the flapping of his

  • 2. Sonny s Blues Sonny s Blues A captivating tale of a relationship between two troubling brothers in Harlem, Sonny s Blues is told from the perception of Sonny s brother, whose name is never mentioned. Baldwin s choice of Sonny s brother as a narrator is what makes Sonny s Blues significant in terms of illustrating the relationship and emotional complications of Sonny and his brother. The significance of Sonny s Blues lies in the way Sonny s brother describes their relationship based on what he observes, hears, and feels, and how he struggles trying to understand Sonny through the course of the story. This is a story of how two African Americans brothers take their own path through life as they struggle to find meaning in their lives. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their father spent many years struggling to support a family in an overtly racist Northern urban community. Sonny, by contrast, is a romantic artist who is not afraid of taking risks to pursue the things he desires. His passion for music makes him impatient with everything else. He drops out of school; however, he does try to stay away from danger. Sonny does want to live a respectable life without corruption. He does several things to try to escape this corruption; he tries to escape by joining the military, but fails. He tries to escape by using illicit drugs and fails. When life seems to take a toll on Sonny he immerses himself in his music. He realizes that his problems are real and that he can t truly escape them. Music becomes his life as he plays to transform his pain and suffering into something beautiful depicted in his jazz and blues music. Perhaps there is no way that we can absolutely stay out of danger, like Sonny s father said, there is no safe place for anyone (Baldwin 95). Sonny s music offers an outlet for expressing the darkness within him while giving his life meaning. In the pivotal scene of Sonny s Blues, the narrator agrees to go with Sonny to the jazz nightclub. The narrator s realization that he must accept Sonny as he is sets the stage for the narrator s first trip to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The New Hero of Aeneas Essay The New Hero of Aeneas Can myopia afflict an individual with so severe a malady to the extreme of proclaiming, If you take from Vergilius his diction and metre, what do you leave him ? Unless we take this statement as a neophyte joke, we may not be able to continue. The objective of this essay is to clean the bifocals of those whom I presumed after reading the Aeneid as a botched up replica of the Iliad and the Odyssey conclude that it is indeed so and go about perpetuating such calumny. Hence, to answer the obvious, if we strip Vergilius of his diction and metre, we leave him a new type of hero. Well, actually he leaves us a new type of hero, a hero that is foreign to the golden age of Homer. He presents a new ideal of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although he opens up with This is the tale of arms and of a man and suggests that his hero is another Achilles, or Odysseus, he has, before the end of the first paragraph, shown that he reaches beyond Aeneas to the long history that followed from him: and that was the origin of the Latin nation, the Lords of Alba, and the proud battlements of Rome (I, 6 7). Soon after wards, when he has noted the obstacles that the Trojans meet in their wanderings, he again ends a period in the similar note: Such was the cost in heavy toil of beginning the life of Rome (I, 33). Once again, when Venus complains that her son Aeneas is unjustly treated, Jupiter replies not only by promising that all will be well for Aeneas but by giving a prophetic sketch of Roman history to Julius Caesar. This reward, which the ancestor is to receive, is much more than his own success or glory, more even than his settlement in Italy. It is the assurance of the Roman destiny, of universal and unending dominion: To Romans I set no boundary in space or time. I have granted them dominion, and it has no end (I, 278 79). As we can see, at the outset Vergilius shows what kind of destiny is the subject of his poem. The wanderings, sufferings and ultimate success of Aeneas and his followers are but a preliminary and preparation for a greater theme. Secondly, there is different theme in Vergilius art. • 5. The Prohibition Of Performance Enhancing Drugs Continue the Prohibition of Performance Enhancing Drugs Sporting competitions either nationally or internationally have regulations to prohibit or inhibit the use of performance enhancing drugs (PED s). There been a case for the lifting of these regulations to create sporting fair across all types of people. Craig Fry, an advocate for the use of performance enhancing drugs in elite sporting competitions and author of Bring Truth into Play by Saying Yes to Drugs in Sport, is an Australian health social sciences researcher with training in psychology, public health, and applied ethics. Fry testifies that the positives that would result in supervised PED use in elite competitions would create a more fair and balanced playing field. However Craig Fry s claim is invalid, not only are there a multitude of health risks continually being discovered, the use of performance enhancing drugs would diminish the spirit of sporting and create international legal catastrophes with differentiation in the creation of new drug substances. One reason performance enhancing drugs are prohibited is because of the health risks that are a potential outcome of injections that are not medically supervised. Craig Fry asserts the idea of the existence of enabling techniques that provide a safe form of injection for those wishing to use PED s, implying that these safer alternative forms would inherently prevent any potential health risks. • 7. Giorgio Vasari Research Paper Then arose new architects who after the manner of their barbarous nations erected buildings in that style which we call Gothic (dei Gotthi). Florentine historiographer Giorgio Vasari (1511 1574) was the first to label the architecture of preceding centuries Gothic, in reference to the Nordic tribes that overran the Roman empire in the sixth century. Vasari implied that this architecture was debased, especially compared to that of his own time, which had revived the forms of classical antiquity. Long since rid of derogatory connotations, the label is now used to characterize an art form based on the pointed arch, which emerged around Paris in the middle of the twelfth century, was practiced throughout Europe, and lingered in some regions... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While most early medieval churches were covered with timber ceilings, many Romanesque buildings have either stone barrel vaults (i.e., semi circular) or groin vaults (i.e., bays of barrel vaults crossing at a right angle). Their walls are necessarily thick to counter the outward thrust of the vault, and they allow only small windows. From 1100 onward, architects experimented with innovations that, once properly combined, allowed the dissolution of the wall and a fluid arrangement of space. For example, they adopted the pointed arch, which has a lesser lateral thrust than the round arch and is easily adaptable to openings of various widths and heights. They also developed a system of stone ribs to distribute the weight of the vault onto columns and piers all the way to the ground; the vault could now be made of lighter, thinner stone and the walls opened to accommodate ever larger windows. Equally important, flying buttresses began to appear in the 1170s, whose vertical members (uprights) are connected to the exterior wall of the building with bridge like arches (flyers). These external structures absorb the outward thrust of the vault at set intervals just under the roof, making it possible to reduce the building s exterior masonry shell to a mere skeletal ... • 9. Consolation Behavior Should Be Observed Outside Of Species... Consolation behavior entails as an increase in comforting contact in response to and directed toward a distressed individual by an uninvolved bystander, which produces a calming effect (Zahn Waxler et al., 1992; De Waal Van Roomalen, 1979). Observations of consolation behavior in animals such as elephants have led to the conclusion that consolation behavior may require advanced cognitive capacities (Plotnik De Waal, 2014). However, the current study sought to investigate if consolation behavior could be observed outside of species with advanced cognition, such as in a rodentspecies. Such an observationwould suggest that consolation behavior relies on less cognitive capacities and may be variably expressed in species due to their species specific evolutionary context (Burkett et al., 2016). Researchers decided to use the rodent species of the prairie vole and the meadow vole in their study. This was done because the social traits of the prairie vole, i.e. being socially monogamous and biparental, often coevolve with other cooperative behaviors that increase direct or indirect fitness, including social buffering among colony members (Burkett et al., 2016). The meadow vole, in contrast, are promiscuous breeders with no formal social structure. Thus, Burkett and colleagues offered the following three hypotheses. Firstly, they hypothesized that if both voles are placed under reproducible laboratory conditions, then the prairie vole will show consolation behavior while the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Three Ethical Theories Of Ageism Robert Butler a physician, gerontologist, psychiatrist, and Pulitzer Prize winning author, who was the first director of the National Institute on Aging described ageism as [a] process of systematic stereotyping or discrimination against people because they are old, just as racism and sexism accomplish with skin color and gender. Ageismallows the younger generations to see older people as different than themselves; thus they subtly cease to identify with their elders as human beings. Butler saw ageism manifested in a wide range of phenomena on both individual and institutional levels stereotypes and myths, outright disdain and dislike, simple avoidance of contact, and discriminatory practices in housing, employment, and services of all kinds. In today s society people view seniors as less valuable. They are perceived as frail and undesirable because of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Feminist Legal Theory focuses on women who are of mature age being given less rights and opportunities and are also being disregarded in the discourse. It has been pointed out by feminist writers that age can be an organizing principle of power, just as gender, race, class, and sexual orientation are. In context of how systems maintain some arrangements but also may substitute inequalities in later life, other authors have begun to contemplate age and gender lenses. For example as a group, married women and men tend to be better off in terms of their economic/material, health and social resources than those who are not married. Similarly, younger age associates of married women have a tendency to be better off than older age associates of married women. This invites consideration of how rules specifically or cumulatively across the life course aid the relative benefits or drawbacks for various groups of older ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Prehistory Of Home In the book The Prehistory of Home Jerry Moore discusses the importance that home structures have had for humans over time in different places of the world. He says that In addition to their basic and fundamental function of providing shelter from natural elements, dwellings are powerful and complex concentrates of humanexistence... our dwellings reflect and shape our lives (Moore, 3). He believes that homes are representations of the existence of individual humans as well as their surroundings. Jerry Moore is successful in explaining the importance of home in archaeology throughout history with colorful examples as well as a comparison of the importance of the home in the past to the importance of the home in the future. Moore sees the home as a reflection of the self as well as a mirror image of one s surroundings. His goal is to describe the importance of archaeology in history of home by critiquing the writing of an illuminated history and that by exploring the homes of people in the past we can see the pas from a different perspective (Moore, 9). He says that, archaeology is the only way those ancient lives can be recovered and added to the consultable record of what it means to be human (Moore, 10). He also wants to abandon the notion of time as linear and wants it to be seen as a continuum instead. He believes the the goal of understanding the past intersects with the continuing human domestic project (Moore, 11). Another goal of the book is to survey the ways ... (1 paragraph) I would alter the project by using the formula of VO2max=15x(HRmax/HRrest), and have each participant perform a VO2Max test, by using the metabolic cart. I would then compare the results from the metabolic cart and the VO2 equation, and them compare the results for comparison. I would make this change, because our group had to alter the formula of VO2max=15x(HRmax /HRrest), in order to perform a submaximal test. What we did was calculated the max heart rate, and multiplied that value by 85% of VO2 which would be considered a submaximal test. I would have liked to have seen the comparison to the equation and the metabolic cart, to see if there was an increase or decrease in the values of each of the measurements of maximal oxygen consumption. This would be interesting to analyze, because the population will not always have a metabolic cart around to measure VO2. If the equation showed similar values to the metabolic cart, the equation would be a good tool to use for estimation if the metabolic cart was not available. 3.For your project, were the test procedures provided in the Metabolic Cart/VO2 Testing lecture followed? Which steps were followed and which were not? If steps were not followed, why? (2 paragraphs) Listed below are the steps that were used as test procedures ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In both of those three kind of program, there is a common problem. Those children rarely work independently or in self selected group tasks. On the contrary, the point is on following teacher s guidance, instead of self invention. All the children will do the same thing at the same time. For example, in a typical art class, teacher demonstrates how to fold and twist a paper butterfly. Then she check every child doing the same step before proceed to the next step. During the 1920s the nation prospered under wealth and happiness, something never attainable during or before the wartime. A large increase in income for Americans meant that they were able to afford more appliances like a toaster or a car. Prices dropped with industrial innovations like the moving assembly line. With these new prices, people could buy more per dollar. Henry Ford s, The Ford Motor Company is an example of a business that prospered in the 1920s. The innovation of Ford s Model T allowed many Americans to explore the country and experience being on the road. Unlike issues that many passionate individuals aren t afraid to voice their opinions on such as racism, sexism, climate change, and marriage equality, the issue of class divide is like the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about or address. As Bell Hooks puts it, author of Where We Stand: Class Matters, Racism and sexism can be exploited in the interests of class power. Yet no one wants to talk about class. (Hooks 7) The fact that discussions of class and class divide have become such a taboo in the United States is truly disappointing. Class, more than race or gender, is the single biggest factor in determining someone s success. Therefor, it should go without saying that discussions and open dialog about class are crucial in this society in order to advances its citizens and promote success with as many people as possible. It wasn t always like this. There was indeed a time in our history when class was talked about, a time when the poor were cared for, not seen as second class citizens or a taboo. David Hilfiker describes an earlier time in our history as a nation when it was just assumed that a physician would care for the poor. Bound to uphold the chivalric code of loyalty and honor of the time, Palamon and Arcite discover themselves at odds with their noble ideals as they battle one another in pursuit of love. Unable to reconcile the knight s oath of honor with their obsessive and selfish desires, the actions of Chaucer s main characters fail to uphold the basic principles of chivalry. Palamon and Arcite, oblivious to any personal responsibility or wrongdoing in the dispute over Emily, expect the other to uphold the chivalric code without doing so himself. Most certainly, if one or both of the men heeded the high expectations of conduct, they would spare their brotherhood and avoid the perils of their battle, but neither man finds it within his conscience to do so. Sadly, the government merely focus on the enforcement portion of the law. Child support in this day and age has prolonged its deceptive theory of actually supporting the child with the absence of a parent; typically a father. In the United States, when parents do not live together, children most often live with their mothers (Grall 2009). Granted that more women and government have taken advantage of the absences of fathers; without facing any repercussions for their actions. In the end, such absences carry detrimental effect on most children who are raised by a single parent with the government hypothetical assistance. These pressing issues are becoming prominent as most children in the U.S. spends some portion of their childhood living apart from at least one of their parents (Grall 2009). Part of this occurs mainly because of high divorce rates as well as an unprecedented increase of childbirth to unmarried parents. Hastily following these actions, assistance came from two local military bases, Fort Sill and Tinker Air Force Base, where the commanding officers authorized a variety of equipment and personnel to assist before the federal government authorized assistance. • 52. Violence, Foolishness, And Impulsiveness In The Knight s Tale The Knight s Tale is one of many tales from the Canterbury Tales. This story sets in the city of Athens. Which opens into the theme of violence, foolishness, impetuousness, and impulsiveness; initially exceedingly emotional responses. One example is when two of our main characters, Palmon and Arcite, both fall in love with Theseus s sister in law (Emelye). These two blood brothers, leave each other after seeing Emelye out of the window of the tower. Which, I believe is a very impulsive decision, for they have not got time to know who she is and her personality. Also, they act like mortal enemies after just seeing her, so this thoughtprocess was completely impulsive and based on her looks. And later, Arcite tries to get to know her better after he was released from his imprisonment sentence by disguising himself, so he can take a job as a page in Emelye s chamber. I believe this shows that he wants to know her, but also it shows he is not being honest with her, which shows he was being impulsive and deceiving. He only learned about the little things that she liked, not her personality. Emelye learned a little bit about Arcite after the little conversing they shared, so they learned a little of each other s personality. This shows that the friendship was growing and not an intimate relationship, like Arcite wanted. So the story goes on and both Palmon and Arcite have been released from prison. And they happen to both decide to wander in the woods. Then they confront each other, each claiming the right to Emelye. The next day, they were brutally hacking away at each other. Honestly, I believe they are being impulsive and violent, they still barely knew Emelye (especially Palmon), and they decide to go kill each other. Then here shows up Theseus, which a loving and wise duke, but he can also be a little impulse when it comes to violence (which is fairly normal for a duke in the 1390s). Theseus tries to be loving when he sees the two men fighting, but he changes his mindwhen he found out it was Palmon and Arcite fighting. And that they were fighting because they love Emelye. Then Theseus was about to respond by killing them, but his loving wife and Emelye intervened, pleading for their lives. They pleaded ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Carl Rogers’ Theory of Personality Running head: PERSONALITY THEORY PAPER Personality Theory Paper Personality Theory Paper From the theories of Sigmund Freud to humanistic theories of personality, how one views others greatly influences how one sees the world and vice versa. Because the theories are so different some suggesting that human nature is ill, evil, or bad, while others believe it is intrinsically good it is easy to see why people s views of others and the world are so different. However, each person has a single theory or belief that influences the way they others. For me, that theory is Carl Rogers theory of personality, and this theory greatly impacts how I view others in society and in the workplace, in addition to my own role in society and the ... • 55. Examples Of Satan In Paradise Lost By Dantes Inferno The way Dante describes Satan makes the theme even more noticeable, especially when the way he describes his version of Satan is contrasted with other images of Satan. The Satan of Milton s Paradise Lost, for example, still has some of the rule and beauty he had when he was the most dominant and attractive of all the angels. He was energetic, was able to make influential speeches in hell, and able to leave Hell to lure Eve. His speechmaking has even influenced some future readers that there is something honorable about his decision to rebel against God: Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven, he says (Lines 258 263 ). Dante s image of Satan is hideous and powerless, stuck in the ice made by the flapping of his own wings, and nothing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
