This document provides the agenda and instructions for Essay #6 in an EWRT 1A class. It instructs students to propose a solution to an education problem by revising and building upon their previous essay. Students are asked to choose the most promising solution from their brainstorming and write paragraphs explaining how their solution would solve the problem, why it is possible, and how it could be implemented. For homework, students must post the thesis statement and three explanatory paragraphs that were written in class.

4. ESSAY #6: PROPOSING A SOLUTION:
Assignment: Write an essay from five to seven
pages in length, that addresses the topic below.
Use a minimum of five credible sources to
support your argument.
Prompt: Write an essay proposing a solution to a
well-defined problem faced by, or in, education
today. Address your proposal to your audience:
one or more members of the education board, its
leadership, or to outsiders who may be able to
contribute to solving the problem.

5. REVIEW: ESSAY #5
• You can use your writing from Essay #5
• You should revise it to make sure it outlines both
causes and consequences of your problem.
• You should edit it to make sure that you don’t have
sentence level errors
• Your old thesis will become merely a guiding
sentence for your new essay.
• You will write a new thesis that will announce your
solution to the problem. That thesis will go AFTER
YOUR PROBLEM ESSAY!

7. CHOOSING THE MOST PROMISING SOLUTION
• Look at all of the brainstorming
paragraphs you have in front of
you.
• Make sure you have focused on
the solution that seems the most
interesting to explore.
• In a sentence or two, describe the
solution you want to explore
further. You should choose a
solution that you feel motivated to
pursue. This will be your working
thesis!

8. EXPLAIN WHY YOUR SOLUTION

10. EXPLAIN HOW IT COULD BE
IMPLEMENTED.

or steps necessary to carry out

will provide an early test of
whether your solution can, in
fact, be implemented.

11. HOMEWORK
