The document discusses the layout and conventions used in the author's music magazine. It summarizes how the magazine cover, contents page, and double page spread utilize standard magazine formatting conventions like mastheads, images, and pull quotes. The target audience is identified as teenagers and young adults based on the genre of metal music covered and the types of additional content included. Images used throughout the magazine are intended to attract and represent this target demographic.
2. My media product uses the conventions in the following
ways:
Layout of the Cover Page (Masthead, Date, Price, Main
Image, Bar Code)
Layout of the Contents Page (Heading, Subheadings, Text,
Image/Images)
Layout of the Double Page Spread (Heading, Image, Text,
Pull Quote)
Colour
3. The layout of my music magazine
is similar to other rock magazines,
like Kerrang! & Classic RocK. I
used the usual conventions of a
magazine such as, the masthead
and features however. The layout
of my magazine (The Symphony)
is different from other existing
magazines whereas, the main
conventions of the magazine such
as, masthead, date, etc; are not
changed, they are in the standard
format.
4. While creating a magazine, there are some things to be
kept in mind such as, appearance and format.
A magazine should look representable, as audience is
mostly attracted through appearance rather than the
articles in it. Each type of magazine has its own theme,
depends upon the genre. Appearance also makes the
brand of the magazine recognizable to the audience.
Colours are necessary for a magazine, in order to make it
more attractive. Whereas, a colour scheme should be set
for the magazine, to make it more consistent.
5. I have used number of generic forms and conventions
related to the genre, Rock and was inspired by two of
the existing rock magazines, Classic Rock and
Kerrang!.
9. If we compare my magazine’s masthead with any other
existing magazine, then it is quite different. Most of the
rock music magazines uses simple fonts but I have used
a different font as compared to the other magazines, as
shown below:
My Music Magazine’s Masthead KERRANG!’s Masthead
10. The main artist in my magazine’s cover page is looking
straight so a reader could see the artist’s attention
towards him/her. When a reader would hold it, he/she
could feel that the artist is looking at him/her.
11. There is no such comparison between the features of
my magazine with any other, as most of the rock
magazines have similar features.

12. The main image of the magazine’s cover page plays an
important role. It is necessary in order to enhance the
appearance of a magazine and to enhance the
attraction of a magazine towards the audience.
The main image should be a close-up or a mid-shot.
If we talk about my magazine’s main image, I decided
to take a mid-shot and keep the background pure and
crude, as shown below:
13. In most of the magazines, the placement of the bar code
is towards the left bottom and I have used the same placement in
my magazine as well.
14. Issue number/date of the magazine is mostly placed below
or near the masthead.
Only in few magazines it is placed somewhere
else on the cover page.
There are also some editions of the magazines on which the
issue date has not mentioned.
15. The color scheme of my music magazine’s cover page is
Black, Blue, Green, Off-White, Red and Orange.
19. I have kept the heading of my music magazine’s
contents page on the top left because very less
magazines follow this placement and I wanted to show
a rare look.
20. The sub-headings given on my magazine’s contents
page are way too simple as I made them easy to read
for the audience and less complicated.
21. I have used a dark, main and second image, in order to
create a dull look as dull colors are used to represent
Hard Rock and Metal music.

Second Image
22. Page numbers are given next to the sub-headings, in
order to make it easy to read for the reader and they
are kept so simple. No modern fonts are used in them,
in order to make it classic and readable.
26. I have placed the main image of double page spread’s
page on the left page and the image is of a solo artist.
Black & white effects are used in order to make it
historic.
27. I wrote the text in such a style that is used in some
issues of the Billboard Music Magazine. The writing
style is way too simple and it is easy to read for the
reader.
28. The pull quote has written in a standard way and it is
one of the most attractive material in the whole
magazine. Mostly readers are used to read the pull
quotes, especially, when it is the matter of music.
“FOR ME, AUDIENCE IS MY
FAMILY”
29. Page numbers are positioned in a standard way, as they
are positioned in most of the magazines. The double
page spread has a two page layout and it is necessary to
mention the page numbers as double page spread is
placed in the center of the magazine.
30. Rock/ Hard Rock is such type of music, which is heard
mostly by the teenagers and young adults. My media
product, which is a music magazine covers young or
upcoming artists because there are very less magazines
in which young artists are covered. What I think is
that, mostly teenagers and young adults have interest
in such type of magazines as their age group is mostly
covered in them.
31. My music magazine contains content like posters,
download links, musical techniques apart from the
main features, which I think represents the targeted
social group/groups, which are teenagers and young
adults.
32. The chosen genre of my music magazine is
Metal. This genre is only heard by the hard
music lovers, the true Metal heads. Metal
was introduced in late 1960’s and was
heard mostly in United Kingdom and the
United States of America. The first heavy
metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep
Purple and Black Sabbath attracted large
audiences, though they were often derided
by critics, a status common throughout the
history of the genre.
33. The target audience for my music magazine are
teenagers and young adults, as mostly at this age an
individual is used to hear metal and hard rock music.
34. The main images used in the magazine shows about
the target audience of the magazine. If we talk about
the cover page, the artist is posing while holding a
guitar and he is standing in such type of attitude
through which teenagers would attract. If we talk
about contents page, It is quite dull and dark, which
would attract the mature teenagers and young adults,
according to their personalities.
35. If we talk about double page spread, the images used
in it are of a live concert and if we talk about concerts,
there is no need to know that who the audience is
because mostly teenagers and young adults like to
attend concerts and gigs. So, this is how the images
themselves represent the audience.
