OF POP MAGAZINES
By Lewis Lomax
KEY CONVENTIONS OF POP MAGAZINES –
FRONT COVERS:
 Examples of different front covers
 Discussion of font, images and style
 Discussion of how front covers connote the genre of pop music
 How pop Magazine’s engage and interest pop music fans
 Magazine Features – Elements of the Pop Music Genre
 Audience Expectations – Pop Music
 Pop Music: main features that often appear in existing magazines
 How does this research can help me in my own production of a pop
music magazine
EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT FRONT COVERS:
Pop magazines front covers.
They demonstrate the conventions that
every pop magazine has.
DISCUSSION OF FONT, IMAGES AND STYLE
 In the magazine Billboard, for example,
the font used for the magazine title
consist on: the B being in capital and
the rest of the word being in lower
case.
 Additionally the name of the magazine
is almost always behind the image of
the artist on the front cover. This could
suggest that the magazine is so well
know that, consumers don’t need to
see the whole name to know what
magazine it is.
 Some magazines have logos that make
them more recognizable. This means that
the audience and readers, will be able to
pick out their favourite brand very easily.
 The colours chosen for front covers vary
between magazines.
 For example Billboard magazine’s
background colours are always different
and also the colour used for the name, of
the magazine changes. On the other hand
the colours black and white are always used
on the front covers of Billboard’s magazine.
DISCUSSION OF HOW FRONT COVERS
CONNOTATE THE GENRE OF POP MUSIC
 On the front of the magazines, there is usually the main
image of famous pop artist or pop group. This
immediately depicts the purpose of the magazine,
making it obvious to the audience.
 The genre of pop music is conveyed thought the
clothes that the artist wear, in the picture, and
the way the artist look.
 The colours of cloths that pop artist were is
stereotypically, mainly bright colour. Therefore
this are the colours that are used in many Rock
magazines.
 On the other hand, sometime, pop artists do
where dark colours such as black.
 On the front cover there are
headlines, or images, of articles that
are about other pop artists: which
are used to inform the audience
about what is happening with other
members of the pop music world.
This will attract more consumers to
read and buy the magazine.
 The bright colours used, by pop
magazines, is the first identifier of
the pop genre. Another identifier is
the cloths that the artist, on the
front covers, wear are in line with
the ideas of how a pop artist is said
to dress.
 The type of article and the style of writing
used in pop magazine varies depending
on the target audience of the magazine.
 If the magazine is amid at teenagers the
language used could be more colloquial,
compared to the language used in a
magazine aimed at adults.
 The style of writing used, on front covers
is block letters and not cursive.
 This not only grabs the reader’s
attention, but it also allows the audience
to read the headlines more easily: further
deepening their interest in the magazine.
MAGAZINE FEATURES – ELEMENTS OF THE POP
MUSIC GENRE
 The colours that Justin Bieber is dressed in
and the colours used in the article are
purposefully made the same. This create
the magazine’s brand Identity
 The headlines are written in a different colour
to highlight their importance.
 Also colours used attract the attention of the
magazine’s audience.
 This means once they have read the heading
the audience will want to read the rest of the
article
 The Lay out of the Article is done in
away that: the attention of the audience
is drawn to the article first then the
picture of Justin.
 For example the placement of Justin’s
‘dressing room demands’, attracts
attention to the article.
 The picture of Selina and Justin
is another thing that, is used to
hook and rail in people’s
attention to the article.
AUDIENCE EXPECTATIONS – POP MUSIC
 There a certain elements that the audience expects a pop magazine to have.
 The audience expect magazines to talk about the most popular pop artist at
the moment, upcoming tours and concerts.
 In our time the audience expect music magazines to have some amount of
gossip about artist’s private life.
 When it comes to the colors used for magazine the expectations changes
based on the target audience. Teens expect magazines to be bright and
colorful, whilst adults don’t necessarily want that.
POP MUSIC: MAIN FEATURES THAT OFTEN
APPEAR IN EXISTING MAGAZINES
 There are many pop music artist that
are featured on music magazines. One
example of a pop music artist, that is
repetitively on magazine covers is
Taylor Swift.
 Many of the articles talk about her and
her life: how she grew up in the public
eye, what her relationship status is or
how her music is going.
