Q4. Who would the
audience be for your media
product?
Audience Focus: Age
As identified from the chart used to study my target audience for the genre
of EDM throughout my Foundation Portfolio, it’s apparent that the ages of
16-25 are the most popular according to greater interest in EDM content
than any other age group. Its also apparent that the older ages such as 41-
50 (which has no interest according to the 2016 chart) and 60+ have the
least interest alongside the youngest age category. This supported me
greatly in defining the target age for my EDM product. I am also a teenager
of which fits within to this category and therefore also have a great interest
in the genre and have lots of friends who also consider it their prime
likeability in music genre. Making this product allowed me to feel really
close and engaged with the genre itself as I figured what meets my
expectations and desires for an EDM magazine would also meet the
requirements of other fans of the genre.
Audience Focus: Gender
According to the reliable music
contented website ‘Dancing Astronaut’,
the bigger percentage of the EDM
listener is towards the men having 55%
over the women’s 45% popularity. I had
applied this to my reader profile to
keep record of an accurate
representation of which EDM’s age
audience is higher percentage in.
Audience Focus: Education and
Household Income
As clearly identified from the image to the right
sourced from the same EDM survey result graphs,
college students (28%) and high school graduates
(18%) seem to be the most popular categories for
the genre alongside the $25,000-$49,000 household
income in the US at 27% being the highest
percentage. This clearly states that those on
minimum wage or jus above who are also students in
college or high school being more likely within an
age category or 18-25 are the most popular target
for the genre. I had applied this strategy to my
reader profile and adapted it within my production’s
design and pricing of £2.99 for a Plugged-in issue.
Audience Focus: Ethnicity
In terms of ethnic background, Dancing Astronaut
also provided information based on the survey for
the popularity of EDM in reference to ethnicity. It is
clear that white people of 63% are the most
dominating ethnic group amongst others with
Hispanic following on by 29% in second position for
top popularity. This is purely due to the fact that
EDM was introduced by white artists in America of
which influenced this ethnicity mostly alongside
Hispanics also living within the US to gain strong
interest. Within my product I had used a white
models and used the genre itself to reinforce its
roots from the United States and how it is
influencing Britain too over the past few years in
terms of more British EDM artists being recognised
such as Pete Tong.
Written Audience Feedback
1. Toms Balodis: ”I think the magazine is suited towards young adults or teenagers in college or university as EDM is known for suiting that age range specifically. I also really like it the
colour scheme really makes everything vivid and clear to see I also love the original images used.”
2. Amani White: “I really like your product as its highly attractive through it’s ‘edgy’ look in that it really pulls of an electronic vibe in there. I would say its suited mostly to men as the artists
in EDM are mostly male and young people as it’s developed from dance music originally.”
3. Keiran Mortimer: “The appearance of your magazine is highly intriguing as it offers all of the conventional material for not only a music magazine, but specifically for the EDM genre too. I
would believe that the product would be suited to teenagers of their later ages i.e. 18/19 to adults of 25.”
4. Aleah Hartley: “Lewdog your product is really vibrant wit opposite colours, I really like it especially the masthead and artist images they’re really good. I'm not a fan of EDM myself but I
would say that the product would be more suitable to teenagers of a white British/American background.”
5. Molly Simpson: “Hey Lew it’s apparent that your final product has resulted in success from its rather intriguing appearance packed together with interesting content, I don’t really like
EDM as a music genre but I know that your magazine would meet the expectations of teenagers or mid-aged adults.”
6. Angel White: “Yo LD, I didn’t expect you to but your magazine product is ace! Lots of neat colours and designs reflecting your chosen electronic genre, I think it successfully demonstrates
that it meets the target audience of young adults below thirty and teenagers above sixteen years of age.”
7. William Marshall: “Sick magazine bud! I really like all aspects of it to be fair, lots of nice imagery and unique emblem/logo designs to go with your artist who is consistently shown across
the product. I’m more of a rock/indie fan myself but id say that it would be more suited towards young males of some sort. ”
8. William Cross: “Mint. That’s all I can say. You pulled it off really well dude I think your mag is one of the best I've seen at AS/A2, its also clear that you have used conventional material to
support the genre and therefore met the requirements of an audience ranging from around 18-27.”
