What have you learned from your audience feedback? AN ANALYSIS OF COMMENTS MADE BY VIEWERS.
Comment #1 “Good trailer, made you want to see the film, you knew it was a film trailer without having been told. Music was good. Perhaps the hand dripping blood on the church window or perhaps 2 hands clawing at the glass. Well done.”
Analysis: The comment is mostly positive, praising the effectiveness with which the product conveys what is being advertised. The use of music is also praised. Suggestions include changes of minor details, and the altering of events that occurred in the trailer.
“...Can’t wait to see the film. Music was very powerful and went well with the content. Perhaps some blood somewhere.” Comment #2
The comment, much like the one before it, praises the music we selected. Also- as is the case with the previous comment- the product is thought by the audience to be effective in conveying its purpose (to advertise a film). This is further confirmed by most of our feedback, where the audience comment on how they would like to view the film it advertises, were a real media product. Analysis:
Comment #3 “The amalgamation of mediums creating a direct correlation between them is very clever. The imagery, accompaniment, lighting, text are at one. The text could be bigger or even be made to appear to grow in size and colour as more text is prevailed. If I was deaf I could through vision detect a rhythm similar to what is heard. I like the way the colour in different shots builds and layers until you’re in the church and all the colours seen in the previous shots are now suttlely [sic] contrasting and complimenting. Close up camera techniques used well to enhance the theme or message being conveyed. Its also adding a new layer of rhythm to the already pulsating mediums. Its like a beautiful dancer expressing fear and provoking thought.”
Analysis: The comment commends the effectual use of lighting and mediums in the trailer. Also commended is the purposeful use of imagery and accompaniment, which apparently served its intended function. Also learned from this comment is how the rhythm and pace of the trailer is effective in accordance with the text, (which could do with being slightly larger). The comment, “If I was deaf I could through vision detect a rhythm similar to what is heard” is made, which draws a link to a comment made by the filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock; “If it's a good movie, the sound could go off and the audience would still have a perfectly clear idea of what was going on.”
From this comment we can also learn that we used colour effectively, which was given conscientious and considerable thought before the production process. Additionally, the clarity of the purpose of the media product (to advertise a horror film) is unequivocal. The use of close-ups, which were selected deliberately for their relation to the horror genre, is noted as a factor that enhances the media product, and validates its classification as a trailer of the horror genre. Overall, what can be learnt from the comment is that careful use of imagery, pace, colour, lighting and mediums can create an effective media product.
Comment #4 “Pretty good! I like the pace and the framing. Some of the shots are a bit shaky so more use of Mr Tripod please. Also some shots have poor lighting/colour so check your white balance and/or use colour correction in editing. Overall the audience is hit with lots of shocks and a few simple images which keep it nice and clean. Good choice of typeface although this is a little small on the big screen, it does add tension. Well done.”
Analysis: What was learnt from this comment was that, once again, the pace of the trailer has proved popular with the audience, and contributed to the effectiveness of the media product. The feedback advises use of a tripod, however the ‘shaky’ effect was in fact created deliberately to convey a sense of realism. Comments about poor lighting carry some validity, however we wanted to achieve a low key lighting effect in order to ensure the technique of chiaroscuro was fully visible. Also, we learnt that use of imagery is effective in the media product. Suggestions for change include a larger font, which has been mentioned in other comments.
Summary: To conclude, what was learnt from audience feedback was that the strong points of the media product were its use of imagery, pace, lighting and sound, which combine to create a powerful and effective teaser trailer. In terms of how we would improve the media product if we were to produce it a second time, this would predominantly include use of a larger typeface, and further utilisation of a tripod.
