What kind of media institution might distribute
your media product?
EVALUATION QUESTION 3
If an institution was to distribute it then it would likely to not be a mainstream
institution such as, 20th century fox. This is a subsidiary of the conglomerate 21st
century fox. I would not pick this because it is not often that this institution
distributes horror films, due to horror having niche audience. This institution will
only produce a film with enough USP’s, having a mass audience would be one. The
reason for this is because 20th century fox will deal with films that 21st century do
not want but want to still gain from the film. The less USP’s the film has, the less
of a guarantee the films profit will have.
Example of successful film from this subsidiary:
• Deadpool
• Maze Runner
• Titanic
WHAT INSTITUTION WILL NOT BE
SUITABLE
However, if a big successful institution such as, the conglomerate AOL Time Warner,
was to take my film and distribute it, then the film will likely be successful, because a
big company is able to distribute it well. Successful distribution would ‘guarantee’
success because the company has lots of money behind it to back it up. With more
money the company doesn’t have to just rely on cheap alternatives, such as viral
marketing. The company can distribute the film via, posters, interviews on TV
programs, magazine interviews, special film trailers and billboards.
The company is also most likely to be able to get product placement deals for my
media product. This would be because the company will have a name for itself and
people will trust it with their money.
The media product would also likely have a saturation run in cinemas because the
money of the institution would allow this to be a possibility.
SUCCESSFULNESS OF BIG
INSTITUTIONS
My media product is most likely to be distributed by an independent institution, this is
because as a first media product, my groups names would be unknown in the film
industry, meaning that some people will not give us much of a chance. On one hand,
there would be difficulties of having an independent company distribute my product
because this means that they will have less money to help the film.
Although, having an independent institution distribute the product means that there is
less of a chance of merchandise for the film. It does mean that viral marketing would
be a huge part of the distribution, this means we could get a lot of people on board
with the film, using hashtags of twitter or abilities to share clips on YouTube through
to Facebook. The product could also have it own website, and it wouldn’t take much
out of the budget as viral marketing is free or very cheap.
INDEPENDENT DISTRIBUTOR
The two ideas that I had for what institutions would distribute my media product is,
‘Twisted Pictures’ and ‘Blum House Productions’.
I soon realised that ‘Blum House Productions’ would not be very suitable for
distributing my product. This is because out of all of the horror films that I have seen
this institution distribute, they are all about paranormal situations. This does not match
my opening sequence.
POSSIBLE INSTITUTIONS
I decided that the institution most likely to distribute my product would be ‘Twisted
Pictures’ because the sort of films that they promote are, clearly twisted, and that is
the vibe that I wanted to get from my opening sequence.
