In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Question 1
Use of conventions
S Recent teen films share similar codes and conventions
that fit into the bracket of forms which include the film’s
genre, title and production values. In our own product we
have applied these significantly because it is key to be
distinct with the genre choice for your target audience.
For example, we have established the characters and
setting in our film trailer using a variety of shots to
illustrate that the story revolves around teenagers at
school. Similarly, films we researched into, such as Mean
Girls and Clueless, make use of establishing the
characters and setting for teen films.
Developing conventions
S In order to establish a connection with our target
audience we needed a story-driven element that will
entice them into watching the film for it to be a success.
Our target audience range from 16-25 years old who like
indie films, we believe that our film trailer’s elements will
be more interesting for this age range. By casting
teenagers into the film about leaving school and
identity, these are factors that create the bonds between
film characters and audience, they are able to relate to
the events in the story. At the start of the trailer we
feature the main characters to develop the connection
between the film and audience, as well as identify key
characters by featuring the two lead characters a lot
more.
Challenging conventions
S We challenged the conventions of our genre as it is not
only a teen drama but it also falls in the fantasy subgenre
because of the mind/body switch in the narrative. Most
films in the same genre don’t have similar aspects in their
story. The monologue we took from some of our clips
also add to the tone of our narrative as a serious drama
because of the subject matter/s featured in the film trailer.
Additionally, we used three music tracks in our film
trailer, while most only use one or two, to emphasize the
tone and pacing of our narrative before ending with a
cliffhanger.
