1) In what ways does my media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
I used many forms and conventions in my music video and ancillary
tasks. The main conventions I decided to use were action, excitement
and brightly coloured. I focused on these three conventions as
through my research, I have discovered that, with the style of my
song, pop music videos are commonly bright full of action and
excitement.

This link discusses how music videos have changed and developed with the
relevant technology. For example, music videos were once called 'illustrated
song'. When YouTube became a main source for online videos, mainstream
artists promote new music videos by releasing trailers of short promos on the sit
for their upcoming song and music video. Consequentially, YouTube has been
converted into a social media platform for celebrities and artists to market
themselves to their fans and audiences. Therefore I have put my own music video
on this platform.
One convention I didn't include was lip syncing. I wanted to tell
more of a story in my music video and narrate it as if the
narrator was the person singing. This can be found on many
other music videos such as Maroon 5’s ‘Maps’ song where the
story is about someone chasing after their partner. This was
chosen as I wanted my music video to be interpretive. My
music video encourages the audience to speculate as to the
deeper meaning of the song, by using narrative which is not
listen literally from the lyrics, and the bond between the two
will not be immediately obvious.
In my music video, I included other forms and
conventions found in other music videos; such as cutting
to beat. I show a clock, then to my characters face, then
the clock. Over and over to the beat as it builds up to the
main chorus.
I used a lot of focus pulls in my video to attract the
attention of certain objects to my audience. This
features in a lot of videos when the camera focuses
on an object close up, then slowly pulls away onto
the main subject.

A lot of music videos included motion blur to add
an affect to the way a character moves around
on the screen. In some scenes, I also used this
idea as this convention would fit in nicely with
my theme of football.
During my music video research, I noticed how the
camera leaves the scene of where the action is to
conclude the video. This is something I added to my
own video to show the viewers that the video was
ending using a drone by flying up away from the scene.
However, at the end of the music video I challenged
the convention of leaving scene as I rewind my entire
music video and the last thing you see is my characters
eyes open, an extreme close-up.
At the end of my music video, I added the title of the song once
again to remind the audience of the artist and name so that they
will remember and possibly advertise the music to friends which,
in turn, would make the music video more successful. Other
music videos have done this such as the original music video for
the non-remixed version of my song choice.

The transitions between different points in time is also a
convention found in a lot of music videos. At one point its
during the day, and others are during the night and others
they cut back to other scenes as if showing two stories. At
my music video is about getting better at a sport, I wanted
to show progress over time and therefore did the same
thing. This was highlighted by the different lightings used,
locations and even what my character was wearing.

Smallpool’s ‘Dreaming’ music video has scenes where
they blur during the transitions of scenes to remind the
viewer of the story being a dream. This isn't uncommon
in music films to do this. I wanted to portray this same
affect in my own media as this convention of a music
video could lead to limitless ideas. At the start of the film
I have my character close his eyes and at the end I
reverse the entire clip and we see his eyes open once
again.

Evaluation Question 1

  • 1. 1) In what ways does my media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • 2. I used many forms and conventions in my music video and ancillary tasks. The main conventions I decided to use were action, excitement and brightly coloured. I focused on these three conventions as through my research, I have discovered that, with the style of my song, pop music videos are commonly bright full of action and excitement.   • 3. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_video This link discusses how music videos have changed and developed with the relevant technology. For example, music videos were once called 'illustrated song'. When YouTube became a main source for online videos, mainstream artists promote new music videos by releasing trailers of short promos on the sit for their upcoming song and music video. Consequentially, YouTube has been converted into a social media platform for celebrities and artists to market themselves to their fans and audiences. Therefore I have put my own music video on this platform.
  • 4. One convention I didn't include was lip syncing. I wanted to tell more of a story in my music video and narrate it as if the narrator was the person singing. This can be found on many other music videos such as Maroon 5’s ‘Maps’ song where the story is about someone chasing after their partner. This was chosen as I wanted my music video to be interpretive. My music video encourages the audience to speculate as to the deeper meaning of the song, by using narrative which is not listen literally from the lyrics, and the bond between the two will not be immediately obvious.
  • 5. In my music video, I included other forms and conventions found in other music videos; such as cutting to beat. I show a clock, then to my characters face, then the clock. Over and over to the beat as it builds up to the main chorus.
  • 6. I used a lot of focus pulls in my video to attract the attention of certain objects to my audience. This features in a lot of videos when the camera focuses on an object close up, then slowly pulls away onto the main subject. Focus point Focus point
  • 7. A lot of music videos included motion blur to add an affect to the way a character moves around on the screen. In some scenes, I also used this idea as this convention would fit in nicely with my theme of football.
  • 8. During my music video research, I noticed how the camera leaves the scene of where the action is to conclude the video. This is something I added to my own video to show the viewers that the video was ending using a drone by flying up away from the scene. However, at the end of the music video I challenged the convention of leaving scene as I rewind my entire music video and the last thing you see is my characters eyes open, an extreme close-up.
  • 9. At the end of my music video, I added the title of the song once again to remind the audience of the artist and name so that they will remember and possibly advertise the music to friends which, in turn, would make the music video more successful.   • 10. The transitions between different points in time is also a convention found in a lot of music videos. At one point its during the day, and others are during the night and others they cut back to other scenes as if showing two stories. At my music video is about getting better at a sport, I wanted to show progress over time and therefore did the same thing. This was highlighted by the different lightings used, locations and even what my character was wearing.   • 11. Smallpool’s ‘Dreaming’ music video has scenes where they blur during the transitions of scenes to remind the viewer of the story being a dream. This isn't uncommon in music films to do this. I wanted to portray this same affect in my own media as this convention of a music video could lead to limitless ideas. At the start of the film I have my character close his eyes and at the end I reverse the entire clip and we see his eyes open once again. Start of the music video End of the music video
