The document discusses how the student's music video uses, develops, and challenges conventions of real music videos. It summarizes how the student filmed establishing shots to look like early morning using color correction presets. It also discusses how the student achieved shots of the protagonist training outside by adding similar color corrections. The student included letterboxing and other techniques to make the video look professional. Overall, the student developed the concept of a motivational training theme to fit the electronic music genre, challenging conventions by not directly relating to the song lyrics.

What Exactly Is The Common Rail Direct Injection System & How Does It Work
Evaluation question 1
1. QUESTION 1:
IN WHAT WAY DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS
2. • The song I used “Love me” Is very similar to other EDM songs that have been released in the
last few years, these songs tend to follow a set “trend” and the music tends to move with
society and its changes. These songs all seem to follow a similar style, they start of slow with
lead vocals and then slowly progress to a main bass drop followed by a catchy chorus. Music
videos for EMD genre of music will usually be very fast action passed I planned to sculpture
this into my video.
• Music Videos that are associated with EDM or house music are most prominently associated
with sport or are “motivational”. So to achieve this I ask my good friend Will Bedford who does
sailing as a profession if he would mind me coming to his training sessions and filming him from
a distance, I went multiple times before I had even started my pre-production as I wanted to
actually watch him train and see the commitment and effort that he goes through on a daily
basis. I did this for a few weeks to get a wide scape view and general idea was to what my
music video would become.
• I noticed that in music videos that had been developed in the industry, they were all very
visually beautiful, So when I had all of my footage I experimented with different types of color
correction and effects to achieve this look.
3. The Opening
For my establishing shot, I have in mind that It would
show the protagonist In bed asleep, half way through
the scene his phone alarm would go off showing the
time and getting him to wake up and go train.
When it came to filming, I had realized that It would
become increasingly difficult to make it look like early
morning ( before sunrise ). After doing research on
the internet and watching tutorials on YouTube, I
downloaded Presets onto my Laptop that I was able
to drag onto my video clip, giving it that morning
effect.
This is a screenshot taken from my editing timeline of
the opening scene. As you can see, it is fairly lit up
and doesn't represent an early morning correctly and
as to what I had imagined
This is the same screen shot but with enhanced color
correction and the "Day into Night" preset I
downloaded, As you can clearly see this looks like it is
taken in the environment where the sun as not yet
risen, I am very happy with out outcome.
4. This is another screenshot I have taken that is the
protagonist preparing for his training. Again this was
very hard to make look right as there was a lot of
background lighting but as you can see in the
screenshot below It looks a lot darker and gives the
illusion that It was shot very early in the morning.
As It worked for the establishing shot the way I
wanted it too, I decided to use the same technique for
the next shot. Again I feel like it gives a very
believable illusion that it was filmed in the early hours
of the morning
This is the screenshot of the clip after I had added the
effects. As you can see It gives an illusion of it being
early morning
5. When I came to filming the outside training scenes,
although I went very early, I didn't anticipate the
weather and how early the sun was going to rise, so
when we got to location, it was already lit up. So to
get the early morning look I just added the same color
correction to these shots as i did for the previous
shots, I am very happy how these turned out.
These are just a few examples but I ended up doing
this to each individual shot as I wanted them all
looking similar to industry. Considering that I don’t
have the same equipment that they use, It was very
important that I get this part of my post production
correct.
When doing research I found that a lot of videos had
a “letterbox” effect over the top of the clip, this gave a
professional and industrial look to the final product.
6. Final Shot
For the final shot of my music video, I had
envisioned that it would end with the
protagonist running in slow motion towards the
camera In slow motion. With equipment limited I
was unsure as to how I would achieve this shot.
I then thought that the way I could achieve the
smoothest shot of him running would be from a
car, so we found a quiet road and with someone
driving I sat in the back and filmed him running
towards us. We filmed in 100FPS in order to get
the smoothness and slow motion.
To show how this was filmed, using Adobe
Illustrator I made a cartoon representation of
how I filmed this scene.
7. Codes and Conventions For Music Videos
The codes and conventions of music videos are the different techniques used to construct
meaning in them. These can be divided into two types; technical and symbolic.
Technical – How meaning is conveyed using technical equipment e.g. the way camera angles are
used, different types of shots, sound either diegetic or non diegetic sound, the pace and style of
editing, and the genre.
Symbolic – These are ways of showing meanings beyond what you can see, for example through
facial expressions, gestures and mise en scene.
The conventions of a music video vary depending on the genre of music. However, the general
conventions include;
- The style - The sound (Non Diegetic)
- The camera - Mise en scene. Props, lighting, costume, location etc..
- The editing techniques - Notions of looking – Stereotyping
8. Codes and Conventions For Music Videos
Music Videos can be separated into three separate categories; Performance, Narrative and Concept.
Performance based music videos usually include only the artist or band performing their song, These generally
include dancing, lip syncing, live concerts or musicians playing music instruments. Performance videos are used
mostly to build a relationship with the audience to show off the star identity.
There is no connection between the lyrics of the song and the visuals on screen, as we can just see the artist's
dressed up performing their song.
This method is used to promote the “star image” of the band or group as usually the male or female gaze is used to
attract certain audience types and create popularity. Performance based music videos are the most common
among all three types. This categories does not fit my music video as there is no lip syncing or any artist
performing the song in front of the camera.
Concept music videos are based on a specific concept or theme. They can be magic, supernatural, historical,
religious, scientific or any other idea which is based on a concept or a theme. Mostly concept videos intrigue a
specific class or target audience, according to the idea of the music video. These videos are not as easy to
understand as the other two types are and they are more difficult to product as they require a lot more production
and creativity. These can sometimes be very unusual and attracts the viewer. This categories best describes my
music video as it is not any ot the other two and it has a theme of “motivational and training” which has nothing to
do with the actual song itself but I am happy with my final product and feel like it is an accurate representation of a
“concept” music video.
9. Codes and Conventions For Music Videos
Music Videos can be separated into three separate categories; Performance, Narrative and
Concept.
Narrative based music videos attempt to tell a story that features in the lyrics or that is suggested
in the lyrics and then dramatized in the video itself, they are often found when they feature footage
from a film. Narrative videos often establish a clear relationship between the lyrics and the visuals
of the song. Either the actors are acting according to the story or the music artists are performing,
narrative based music videos might include performance of the actors or the musicians, but they
focus mainly on narrative, they require the viewer to understand the lyrics song clearly and these
types of videos are easily understood.
Although this type of music video could potentially fit in with my video. I have no direct links to the
lyrics and representations on screen.n
10. Costume
The costume and dress code in a music video can be very important as it is usually used to
represent a certain character in different ways. Different artists would also wear different clothes to
represent what they are portraying in the music video. For example In my music video, you see
the main character wearing sports clothing which follows the narrative of him training and sailing.
Location
The location, and scene of a music video can not only show the audience were the artist is, but
can decide on the genre, for instance locations like a beach, or in a car or at a party, these sort of
locations you would usually find in a pop music video; due to the happy and lively feel they give. If
the music video was filmed in a street, or in a modern house, these are typical locations you might
find a gang, and you would relate this to grime/hip-hop type video. The location influences the
genre. For example in my music video. The song I used is a very electronic and up beat song so
that is why I went for the theme of training and motivation. You could tell this from just looking at
the locations as I filmed in a gym and a sailing training center.
