Evaluation question 1 (1)
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2. It was quite clear our documentary had to be classed as participatory, this allows
the presenter to interact with the interviewee and the dogs on camera meaning that
it would create a more laid back and relaxed feel to the documentary.
An example of a participatory documentarian is Louis Theroux, Louis manages to
get personal will his interviewees and ask deeper quicker die to the extra
interaction level of the documentary. This makes the documentary a lot more
interesting and more hands on.
From our target research we decided this was the best thing to do as it is a lot more
interesting and the interaction level makes you fell part of it.
If you watch our target audience interview you will see this was the best thing to do.

3. Many documentaries used sourced footage at some point of their documentary,
however we thought that didn’t truly reflect what we wanted to achieve and
decided we were going to film the whole thing by ourselves.
Sourced footage doesn't always convey want you are trying to send across to the
audience, although it could be the perfect clip it is pretty much always obvious and
brings down the tone of the documentary.
4. Montage of clips at the start of the documentary
gives a general insight and overview as to what
the audience can expect from the documentary.
It shows exactly what the documentary will focus
on and defines the fact it will be showing dogs in
the best possible light.
The montage itself has an happy feel about it and all the reasons why Dogs are
mans best friend are positive ones, a comparison of one documentary to another is
between the BBC1 documentary‘The Wonder of Dogs’ and ours. At the start of the
wonder of dogs there is a montage of clips where dogs are predominately shown
doing activities related to the documentary, although simple this is a common
technique used in a lot of documentaries to set the tone and mood right from the
start of viewing.
5. Throughout daily life, social media is starting to
take over all aspects. With this in mind as a group
we decided to incorporate this into our
documentary so people can connect in real time
and a lot quicker, we included two definitive
hashtags throughout our documentary.
Our two hashtags were #Dogumentary and #Mansbestfriend
These hashtags will be seen on our audiences social media timelines and will
spread the word about the documentary quickly and easily making them aware of
what to expect and curious as to whether they would enjoy it.
6. In many documentaries there is the common theme that a voiceover is heard then
the documentarian of presenter is introduced. This is also a common theme in our
documentary.
Like the wonder of dogs a voiceover is heard and then they're introduced, our
documentary is very similar to this and portrays a lot of the same views and
conventions of documentaries.
The voice of god offers a voice that cant be put to a face, however a lot of
documentaries use this
7. Documentary music is used to create a mood and feel to the scenario, throughout
our documentary there is a consistent happy feel and this is reflected in our
audience feedback.
At one stage of our documentary there I however a change of mood and this is
easily shown in the music, when our sight impaired interviewee Sarah is talking
about her condition and how it came about the music turns slow and sad to
highlight how it is a difficult subject and could be very sensitive to her. It must be
hard to talk about it and the music changes will help the audience understand this.
