How did you
attract/address your
audience?
Evaluation Question 5
Character and Representation
 My film's protagonist and antagonist are both female and male respectively,
which in itself widens the audience that would be attracted to view our film.
This is due to the fact that this makes our film relatable to both genders. A
female lead isn't common for films of this genre, which means that our film is
defying its genre's common conventions, which in some cases is a way to
attract audiences, as it is something they haven't seen before.
Narrative/Story
 My narrative would attract my audience, due to its originality and
unconventionality. My story would follow the female lead, as she is stuck in an
industry that she doesn't want to be involved in. The majority of crime films
would follow a narrative that involves a person working in the crime industry
and progressively making their way up to the top, or about police solving a
crime. This different approach in narrative could be a potential selling point,
as people could be interested to see how the story differs from that of a
typical crime drama film.
Iconography
 We tried to fit in as many pieces of genre-relevant iconography as we possibly
could, such as the drugs that our protagonist is seen handling in the flashback
sequences. This fits well into our genre, as it is a common piece of
iconography seen in crime films. This proves that our film is somewhat
relevant to the conventions of genre, as it contains iconography that fits,
despite the fact that the narrative from my film is unconventional. This would
attract an audience, as the film is still somewhat similar to other films of the
same genre.
Sound
 The sound that I used was intense dramatic music, which added to the
intensity of the sequence as a whole. This music would give the audience an
insight into the feel of the film, which would attract an audience as it gives
them an indication as to the atmosphere of the film.
Uses and Gratifications
 I used the Uses and Gratifications theory to construct a film that would draw
in a wide audience. The theory states that audiences are drawn to a film for
several reasons, including Escapism, Social Interaction, and identification. To
create a film that people would be interested in, I had to make it a world
that they could escape into. This is why I included aspects of mystery into my
work, as it would create a world which my audience would be interested in,
and therefore more easy to escape into. Furthermore, the plot factors into
the social interaction aspects, as the mysterious themes of the film would be
an interesting topic of conversation between people and their friends. The
identification comes from the main protagonist and antagonist, as they are of
both genders, which means that they can be relatable to male and female
audiences alike.
