Evaluation Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product?
1. Q3. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION
MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
AND WHY?
2. WHAT MAGAZINE PUBLISHING HOUSE MIGHT
OWN YOUR MAGAZINE?
The publishing houses that I would consider to publish my own
magazine would be small yet growing independent publishers such
as Anthem Publishing which is Britain’s fastest growing publishing
company by copy sale revenue which means that my magazine
could potentially gain a lot of exposure.
In 2015, their magazine sales have grown by 31%, subscriptions
are up 36%, web visitors up 57%, social media engagement up
310% which is better than other independent publishers whose
sales went down overall.
They are known for music magazines such as Music Tech, Classic
Pop and Vintage Rock, which all focus on the retro rock and pop
genre and also publish other magazines which also appeal mostly to
middle-aged men which is the primary my target audience for my
magazine as well.
3. WHERE MIGHT YOUR MAGAZINE BE
DISTRIBUTED?
My magazine would be sold in newsagents,
since they are known for selling a variety of
magazines that can easily be browsed
through by customers. Newsagents are a
traditional way of selling magazines and
newspapers so that they are widely
available for my target audience to
purchase.
However, I would allow my magazine to be
distributed over the internet in order to
potentially increase sales. This is simply
because digital technology is and has
become more popular with the younger
generation as spend more and more of their
time on specific devices (e.g. smartphones),
so making my magazine available on mobile
devices through apps can allow my
secondary demographic (18-24 year olds) to
engage with the magazine if they are not
able or not bothered to buy a physical copy
at a newsagent or a shop like WHSmiths.
4. HOW FREQUENTLY WILL THE MAGAZINE BE
CIRCULATED? WILL IT BE AVAILABLE THROUGH
SUBSCRIPTION?
My magazine will be circulated monthly, as shown on the front cover.
My magazine could be available through both and online and mail
subscription to allow readers the choice to have a physical copy.
There will be two types of subscriptions;
The standard subscription (£25.99/ £ 22.99 for mobile users) will
come very month as normal
The premium subscription (£30.99/ £27.99) will come by post or
be available to download a week earlier.
5. WHAT DATA HAVE YOU GOT ON MAGAZINE SALES IN
YOUR CHOSEN GENRE- ARE MAGAZINES IN YOUR
GENRE SELLING WELL?
Magazine sales in the UK have decreased overall. According to the
ABC stats, magazines of all genres and special interests have
suffered a decrease in sales in 2015 or may have not been 100%
paid for.
Vintage Rock magazine has an average sales of approximately
24,000 copies (both digital and physical copies) per year, so sales
have remained consistent along with Classic Pop that has a print run
of 35,000.
On the other hand, similar magazines such as Vive Le Rock
magazine only has 15,000 sales per year, showing that this genre
sells less in comparison to pop or indie rock magazines which,
although decreasing in sales, are still going strong.
However this decrease in print sales could be recovered through
digital copies. The reduction in physical sales has been due to the
increase in use of digital technology and this has had a large (and
negative) impact on the magazine industry since most magazines
now upload their articles online for free to view or have online
subscriptions services. This has happened because people are now
viewing material online rather than buying it from traditional methods
(newsagents)
6. WHAT IS THE MAGAZINE WEBSITE LIKE? HOW
POPULAR IS IT? IS THE MATERIAL IN THE MAGAZINE
EXCLUSIVE TO THE PRINTED VERSION?
The magazine’s website is easy to navigate and very minimal and
simplistic. It doesn’t have many visitors since my magazine’s
audience consists of mostly older age groups, who are less likely to
use or be fully engaged with digital technology.
Although full magazines articles will not available on the website,
short previews will be posted along with additional content that will
be present in the magazine (e.g. latest updates and editors’ notes)
along with exclusive interviews on the online site
(vintagevibesmag.com) with links to the magazine’s social media
pages.
