How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary
texts?
Synergy
• Synergy is the interaction or cooperation of
two or more organizations, substances, or
other agents to produce a combined effect
greater than the sum of their separate effects.
I have used synergy within the my product by
combining them so that they can be seen to
all be advertising one thing, my movie. By
doing this they have a greater effect by
advertising as a whole rather than each
individually.
How I used synergy
• I used synergy in several ways for my trailer
and ancillary texts. For example, I kept to a
regular font throughout each product, and
kept to a specific colour scheme.
Characters
• Throughout the product I produced I only
exposed two characters to the audience. I did this
because not only are these the two main
characters but this also means there are minimal
alternations between characters in each of the
products. Therefore, by doing this it means that
the trailer is easily recognisable through each of
the products. Furthermore, by doing this it means
that the audience will form a relationship with
these characters in particular, therefore enticing
them to watch the movie.
• In all three production both of the main characters are
shown; this illustrating, to the audience, that they are
significant characters within the film. The way that
there is either the bond or tension between these two
characters shows that there is issues between them
therefore leaving the audience to think about this and
ultimately intriguing them. I feel that my main product
and ancillary texts work effectively together as they
cause the audience to make suggestions and develop
feelings towards the characters. This therefore
resulting in the audience wanting to watch the movie.
Font
• One real media product that I based mine on was ‘The
Place Beyond The Pines’ and I really liked the font that
was used for it’s products. After researching what font
it is that is used I managed to find a website on which I
could recreate the font, which I then had to screen shot
and use photoshop to crop and select each letter
individually so that I was able to insert the font into my
products. I decided to use this font as I felt that it was
very effective with ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’, which
is of a similar genre as my main product. By using this
as my main font in all of my productions it meant that
they become more recognisable to the audience as a
group of products advertising one movie.
Colour
• The colours used in my productions are important as they
influence the audience to relate all three productions with
each other. The main colour that I used for my productions
is white. I chose this as I felt that this illustrated the
romance genre through white possibly symbolising
innocence and being basic. However, with hints of red, such
as on my magazine cover, I thought that this illustrated
danger. By doing this it meant that the crime/thriller genre
is portrayed. These aspects will influence the audience to
make suggestion about the movie and the characters
themselves. These colours being continued throughout the
trailer also as the title of the film is in white at the end of
the trailer.
Lighting
• The lighting used for both the poster and
magazine cover is fairly dull as this reflects the
moody setting. This suggests to the audience
the crime/thriller aspect conflicting with the
romance genre.
Actors
• In two out of three of my productions I have
included the names of the actors to inform the
audience who is in the movie. I have done this
as an audience is more inclined to watch a
movie if it contains actor they already like.
Therefore, y adding actors names this can
attract a large audience and also draw in
people from outside the target audience.
Summary
• Overall I feel that my trailer, poster and
magazine cover all work well together in an
effective way to draw audiences attention to
the main product. I think that all of the
features used in my productions link
successfully and extend to people possibly
outside of the target audience.
