Media product use as a help
The study of film openings helped me a lot in
terms of my development.
To firstly get an insight into the media and film
world and to take a look behind the scenes was an
important point to get to know how movies are
made and what is important when doing an
opening scene by myself.
Furthermore, it is crucial to have the right
equipment, doing filming which means a
camera, lighting, the location etc.

Representation of social
groups
Our opening scene is based on the opening of
‘Scream 4’ which means a horror film. Hence, we
had the typical situation of boy – and girlfriend
watching a horror movie and suddenly becoming
part in their own. In terms of stereotypes, we had
the scared girlfriend, the annoyed boyfriend and
the mysterious killer who’s face is hidden to the
audience.

Media Institution
Looking at ‘Scream 4’ the media institution
distributing the film was ‘Dimension
Films’, therefore we are probably going to take the
same to make our opening more realistic and
authentic.

Audience
The audience our opening focuses on in the horror
movie scene. Like Scream, Paranormal Activity and
many others, this movie is especially for those
people who like the excitement and the scary
facets in movies.
Mostly young people therefore, roughly aged
between 16 to 30.

Attract and address the
audience
An opening scene in a movie is crucial for the
producers to make sure they attract their audience
by thrilling them to watch the rest of the movie.
This means that characters, location, filming and
music as well as several other factors are decisive.
To make sure that we are addressing our
audience, we tried to create this atmosphere of a
horror movie which creates tension for the
watchers. Even though we didn’t have further
equipment to create such a mood, we decided not
to show the killer to the audience so that finding
out who it is forces them to continue the film.AS Media Studies

Progress in technology
For me doing this project helped me getting a
better understanding of the technology used in
terms of working with a camera and editing
programs. I never actually did a movie scene or its
editing before so that that was a quite new
experience for me. However, Tii is doing the main
part of the editing which means that I am not that
much into this sector because we divided some of
the work to get it done quicker.
Nevertheless has my knowledge improved due to
the media project.

Preliminary task compared to
opening scene
In the preliminary task we did in march, about 2
month ago, we were filming a conversation using
the 180 degree rule. Reflecting back I can see a
progress in terms of the camera usage and the
editing.
We improved our abilities in doing the filming and
the directing of the scene and I think that overall
we did a good job.
